'Universities have been warned over degree class inflation as an analysis reveals that seven in ten students who get less than DDD grades at A-level go on to graduate with top degrees.
Of the 3,025 students who went to university last year after achieving less than DDD, 69 per cent went on to graduate with either a first class or upper second degree.
This is seven per cent higher than the previous year, and a 73 per cent increase since 2010/11, according to a major report published on Thursday by the Office for Students (OfS).
Those who left school with less than DDD last year were four times more likely to graduate with a first class degree compared to seven years ago, the data showed.
The watchdog noted in its report that it had observed the “greatest increase in attainment” in degree outcomes for those who left school with less than DDD in their A-levels or the equivalent.
The Education Secretary urged universities to take “rapid action” so that degree class inflation is “stamped out”. He called the figures “disappointing”, adding that they “risk compromising the public trust in the high standards of our universities”.
Damian Hinds said that quality in higher education must be protected “at all costs” and called on the regulator to demand that universities with unjustified rises provide evidence of what they are doing about it.
The OfS analysed the degrees awarded by 148 universities in England between 2010/11 and 2017/18. It found that four in five of all students (79 per cent) now graduate with either a first or upper second class degree, up from 29 per cent seven years ago.'
