'Mike Pompeo, the US Secretary of State, has pledged he will not wait for Jeremy Corbyn to become Prime Minister to "push back" against any action his administration might take against British Jews.
Mr Pompeo's remarks come against a backdrop of continued allegations of anti-Semitism in the Labour party, which have gained considerable publicity in the US.
His remarks were made in a behind closed door meeting with American Jewish leaders and emerged when a tape of the proceedings was leaked to the Washington Post.
At the meeting, the US Secretary of State was asked if he would be willing to act "if life becomes very difficult for Jews in the UK?"
"It could be that Mr Corbyn manages to run the gauntlet and get elected. It's possible," Mr Pompeo replied.
"You should know, we won't wait for him to do those things to begin to push back. We will do our level best.
"It's too risky and too important and too hard once it's already happened," he said.
Mr Pompeo also rounded on the Conservatives following their poor performance in the European elections, saying it demonstrated an "abject failure of leadership."
His comments are the latest intervention by the Trump administration in British politics.
Last week, during a visit to Britain, Donald Tump stepped into the Tory leadership election, praising Boris Johnson, saying the former Foreign Secretary would be an "excellent" successor to Theresa May.
The US president also refused to meet Jeremy Corbyn during his trip to London, calling the Labour leader a negative force.
"This demonstrates the new pattern of communication, which does not conform with typical diplomatic behaviour, continues all the way down in the administration," said Brandon Barford, Partner at Beacon Policy Advisors, a Washington, DC-based political research company.'
