Welcome to part 2, please click the link below for part 1 in case you missed it. You'll be glad you did, then come back here to read on to it's conclusion.
In part 1, we looked at the first half of the "Scale of Evil" which was developed by eminent forensic psychiatrist Dr. Michael Stone. The purpose is to categorise murderers, psychopaths and serial killers on a scale from 1 to 22, with 1 being the "best" and 22 being the most evil. In part 1 we covered groups 1 to 11. Those covered by the first article quickly veered from the unfortunate to the demonic.
In part 2, it's time to see what 12 to 22 have in store for us. We shall see that the limits of evil in human beings appear to show no bounds. We probably already knew this, but the examples that'll be presented here get progressively darker, sicker and more incomprehensible to any "normal" person.
So let's buckle up and get cracking, picking up from where we left off last time.
12 - Power-Hungry Psychopaths
These people kill with ease, especially when backed into a corner, such is their overwhelming desire to maintain the power they have attained.
Jim Jones was born in America in 1931 and eventually found himself as the leader of a cult called the "People's Temple". Jones was extremely paranoid as well as psychopathic with extreme delusions of grandeur. He was able to draw large numbers of vulnerable people into his cult, which he eventually moved out to Guyana in South America. Jones was not a nice cult leader!
So in 1978, US congressman Leo Ryan and a group of investigators travelled to Guyana to see what on earth was going on. Ryan and 4 of his party ended up shot dead. Jones rightly felt cornered and in an effort to preserve his power, he ordered the whole cult to commit mass suicide.
They duly obliged and 914 people died in total, 276 of whom were children. Jones joined them, in his mind he had no other choice. This became famously known as the "Jonestown Massacre", one of the largest mass deaths/suicides in American history. All because of one man's perceived loss of power.
13 - Rageful Psychopathic killers
These people are murderers with a deep sense of inadequacy that haunts them throughout their lives. Prone to bouts of rage, they are pure psychopaths.
In 2011, Maksim Gelman went on a 28-hour stabbing spree in New York. He was in love with a woman named Yelena Bulchenko but the feeling was not mutual... So he stabbed her to death, followed by her mother. He also killed a pedestrian in his car, this rampage beginning with Gelman stabbing his own stepfather to death. 5 other people were wounded.
In court he would laugh and shout at the judge and the family members of his victims. He displayed zero remorse and received 200 years in jail. Sadly, the death penalty was abolished in New York in 2007, it would've been a fitting punishment.
Another notable member of this group was crazed serial killer Ed Gein who was an inspiration behind the movies "Psycho", "The Texas chainsaw massacre" and "The silence of the lambs". Click the link below for more info on one of the most notorious and fascinating serial killers of the last 100 years.
14 - Self-centred, Scheming, Psychopathic killers
These people are ruthless and exhibit self-serving characteristics to the Nth degree. They are psychopathic and murder comes easy.
John List was born in 1925 and qualified as an accountant, a job at which he was an abject failure. In fact, he couldn't hold down any job, such was his ineptitude. This didn't stop him buying a large house for him, his wife and their 3 children, a house he had no way of paying for.
Faced with financial ruin and the prospect of accepting government welfare, List decided on another option in order to maintain his inner sense of self-importance. In 1971, he shot dead his mother, wife and all 3 kids. Great choice there John...
He fled to Colorado with fake papers and documents where he somehow remained at large as a fugitive for 18 years! He was finally captured and served almost 20 years in jail before he died there in 2008 at the ripe old age of 82. Yet another waste of life on a complete bastard who literally took everything from his family just to preserve his pathetic ego.
15 - Psychopathic spree killers/multiple murderers
Repeat murderers exhibiting full psychopathy. They are cold-blooded and refuse to acknowledge their guilt, with a marked inability to accept reality.
Charles Manson is one of the most infamous killers in history and he falls under this category. He was a petty criminal from a very young age, serving multiple prison sentences for stealing cars and the like.
In his 30's, he somehow managed to put a group of young women under his spell. His major belief was what he called "Helter Skelter", his desire for an apocalyptic race war. The best way to start a race war? Kill rich, white people in Hollywood in full expectation that the authorities would suspect black people of course. Then obviously, in his mind, Manson would be in a position to take over the world...
In 1969 his band of followers, the "Manson Family", were responsible for the infamous murder of actress Sharon Tate who was heavily pregnant by husband and movie director Roman Polanski. Another 4 people present at the home invasion were also butchered to death. The very next night, they killed husband and wife Leno and Rosemary LaBianca in their home, smearing "Death to Pigs" on the walls using Rosemary's blood.
Manson received the death penalty initially but it was later commuted to Life in prison. He finally died in jail in 2017 at the age of 83, another abomination who lived for far longer than he deserved. About 83 years longer.
16 - Vicious Psychopaths who commit multiple offences
These people are fully psychopathic in every sense of the word. Their acts are repeated, vicious and include murder, rape or mutilation. Or a combination of these features.
Miyazaki Tsutomu was born to a wealthy Japanese family in 1962. He had a birth defect that meant he couldn't turn his hands so that his palms were facing up. This led to bullying and being marginalised as he grew up.
In 1989, he kidnapped and murdered 4 young girls, mutilating their bodies. He also drank the blood of one victim. When Tsutomu's father found out, he committed suicide out of shame and the disgrace his son had brought upon him. Tsutomu referred to the suicide as "just punishment" for the way he was brought up as a child. In 2008, he was executed in Tokyo and will not be missed.
Another vile creature who falls under this category is Myra Hindley, partner in crime of Ian Brady, the "Moors Murderers" who murdered 5 children in England in the mid-60's.
17 - Sexually perverted serial killers
Sexual deviancy plays a large role in their crimes. Rape is usually the primary motive for their crimes, the victim is killed simply to get rid of the evidence. Torture is not a primary motive.
Ted Bundy. Theodore Robert Bundy. Arguably the most infamous serial killer ever, he raped and murdered at least 30 girls and women between 1974 and 1978 from the West to East coasts of America. After escaping from a Colorado prison in 1977, he headed for Florida where he was to keep killing.
Bundy was also a necrophiliac, going back to where he'd dumped bodies to have sex with their corpse until it had decomposed. He decapitated at least 12 of his victims, keeping several of the heads as souvenirs in his apartment.
Bundy called himself "the most cold-hearted son of a bitch you'll ever meet" and a lawyer on his own defence team called him "the very definition of heartless evil.” Although he had a defence team, he assumed full control and largely represented himself in his trial. His sense of grandiosity, along with the good looks and superficial charm were not going to save this evil psychopath's life.
He was finally executed in 1989 while a huge all-night party took place outside the prison celebrating his impending death. His crimes warranted the death penalty as much as any that have ever been committed.
Another infamous killer that Dr. Stone places in this category is actually a woman, Aileen Wuornos, made more famous by Charlize Theron's Oscar-winning performance as her in the 2003 movie "Monster". She murdered 7 men in the course of robbery and was executed in 2002, her story is fascinating. However, I'm not entirely sure she's been correctly classified.
18 - Torture Murderers
Psychopathic and psychotic, murder is their primary motive. They kill their victim after a relatively short period of torture.
Gary Ridgway is a text-book example of this type of killer. He became known as the "Green River Killer" and his serial murder career began in 1982. During his childhood, he'd exhibited all the signs of the unholy trinity of warnings; bed-wetting, a fascination with fire and the torture of animals. When he finally graduated to humans, he would strangle his victims and return frequently to have sex with their dead body.
He killed with seeming impunity until his eventual capture in 2001, a rampage lasting almost 20 years. He was finally convicted of 49 murders, making him the most prolific serial killer in American history based on confirmed kills. However, investigating officers believe he is responsible for up to 90 murders, he truly is evil personified.
By means of a plea-bargain where Ridgway told the authorities the location of his missing victims, he managed to avoid the death penalty. Instead, he received 48 life sentences plus an additional 480 years so he won't be getting out any day soon. And when he does it'll be in a body bag.
19 - Non-Homicidal (mainly) Psychopaths
These are psychopaths who while often fall short of committing murder, will gleefully use terror, intimidation and rape. Murder is not the primary motive.
The example case for this category is extremely disturbing, which I think you'll agree is saying something when you consider the monsters we've covered so far.
Dubbed the "Original Night Stalker", he has never been caught. He committed his crimes in California from 1978 to 1986, raping 50 women and killing 12. The crimes were linked at the time and confirmed years later by the advent and advancements in DNA evidence. This has enabled Police to clear many suspects.
Although he clearly derived great pleasure from rape and occasionally murder, what really got his rocks off was terrorising his victims.
After attacks where the victim had survived, he was known to have phoned them at a later date and say things like "Merry Christmas, it’s me again!” or “I'm going to hit tonight” or “I'm gonna kill you.” Sometimes he was good to his word and this terrorism was what he thrived on.
We can only hope that the reason his attacks came to an end was either being jailed for a different offence or death. Hopefully the latter.
20 - Murder Torturers
While this may seem like I'v simply reversed the wording of category 18, they are distinctly different. These people tend to be legally and clinically insane and psychotic, many suffering with conditions like schizophrenia. The desire to torture is the primary motive for these beasts.
Joseph Kallinger is the classic example of such a killer. Severely abused by his father as a child, he was jailed for domestic abuse after 2 wives and 3 of his 5 children told Police of his abuse towards them. He was diagnosed as schizophrenic while in jail for these offences.
Upon his release, Kallinger and a teenage son went on the rampage. They would break into houses and rob, assault and rape the families they found inside. In their last break in, a woman he had tied up berated him so he slit her throat and made everyone present watch.
He murdered 3 people, one of whom being another teenage son of his in an attempt to claim off a life insurance policy. But it was torture that was clearly the motivation for all his attacks, the murders (apart from his son) being a result of this rather than his main intention. He died in 1996 at the age of 59 in a mental hospital, not a day too soon.
21 - Pure Torturers
Though psychopathic, people in this group are judged to have some sort of grip on reality. They subject their victims to the most extreme forms of violence and torture imaginable but do not murder them. Brutal torture is the only motive.
Cameron Hooker kidnapped 20-year-old Colleen Stan in 1977 and held her captive for 7 years, Hooker's wife was in on it from the start. He'd always wanted a sex slave and now he had one.
For the majority of those 7 years, he kept her in a wooden box for 23 hours a day. The box didn't let in light, sound or fresh air, I can't imagine anything worse. After brainwashing Colleen that she was being watched by a secret organisation and that he was protecting her, he made her sign a contract that made her his slave for life.
During this time Colleen was whipped, strangled, burned, electrically shocked, raped and sodomised. When Hooker told his wife that he wanted Colleen to be his 2nd wife, she was having none of it and went to the Police. Colleen Stan's nightmare was finally over after 7 years of the most unimaginable torture and deprivation.
Hooker was sentenced to 104 years in prison though he is up for parole in 2022 when he will be only 69 years old. That's still young enough to enjoy some sort of life on the outside if released, we can only hope he never sees the outside world ever again.
As for Colleen Stan, she went on to achieve a degree in accounting, got married and had a daughter. She is also involved with an organisation that helps women who are victims of abuse. She's now 62 years old and lives in California; I like to think she is "well" even after all she went through.
22 - Psychopathic Torture-Murderers
So we finally find ourselves at the summit of this particular mountain of evil. These people's primary motive is to inflict prolonged, horrific torture of the very worst kind. Most are male serial killers and according to Dr. Stone, Jeffrey Dahmer is as evil as it possibly gets.
Jeffrey Dahmer, like Ted Bundy, is also one of the most famous and notorious serial killers in history. He raped, murdered and chopped up at least 17 men and boys over almost 14 years from 1978 to 1991. When he was 10 years old, he had started to decapitate animals and put their heads on spikes in the garden. A warning sign of things to come.
During adolescence he realised that he was gay but never told anyone. He developed fantasies that involved extreme sexual domination and dissection of humans for sexual gratification. Fantasies revolving around necrophilia and cannibalism also began to form in his sick and twisted psyche.
Dahmer would pick up most of his victims from gay bars. He'd take them home, have sex with them, drug them and then strangle them. On one occasion he drilled into a victim's brain and injected acid into the hole. He said that he wanted to create a "zombie" that he could control and who would never leave him. His experiment, unsurprisingly, didn't work.
He would keep the bodies for up to a week before dismembering the corpse. Some parts would be used for sexual stimulation, some would go in the bin. Other parts would be eaten and he was known to preserve certain body parts. When Police raided his apartment they found 4 severed heads, 7 skulls, 2 hearts, a torso, a bag of human organs, 2 entire skeletons, a pair of hands, 2 penises and 74 photographs depicting the dismemberment of his victims.
Dahmer was convicted of 15 murders in 1992 and sentenced to 936 years in jail. His stint behind bars was to be short-lived; In 1994 another inmate beat him to death with a weightlifting bar while they were on cleaning duty in the prison toilet block. They were strangely left unsupervised by any guards for a while.... Good work chaps, a job well done.
Serial killers like Dahmer torture and kill for the sexual gratification they receive from it. This is fittingly the highest and worst category on Dr. Stones "Scale of Evil". Other notable creatures that find themselves at level 22 include Moors Murderer Ian Brady, John Wayne Gacy, Ed Kemper and Andrei Chikatilo.
You may have noticed that I seem to wish death on many of the criminals mentioned; that's because I do. I believe there's a time and a place for the death penalty and many, if not all I've mentioned here, thoroughly deserve it. But that's another discussion for another article perhaps...
Anyway, I also hope you haven't found the content too disturbing and that it's been of great interest to you. I have something of a personal fascination with this subject and how these people's minds work so when I came across Dr. Stone's work, I knew I had to write about it. Till next time.
