I RESISTED the temptation to shout ‘hallelujah’ as correspondents in my local newspaper claimed political correctness had ‘gone mad’.
They were referring to the truly absurd decision by Manchester Students’ Union to ban clapping in a bid to make their events more inclusive.
I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiments expressed by locals but to suggest political correctness has ‘gone’ mad implies it had some validity in the first place.
Instead it is not only ‘mad’ per se, it is truly dangerous.
The clue is in the word ‘political’. We are talking here about a ‘political’ programme aimed at changing the perceptions and lifestyles of the general population.
It is believed to be the work of the Tavistock Institute for Human Relations in London. To the unenlightened, that’s an organisation dedicated to ‘social science; for those in the know, it’s a focal point for mass public programming and propaganda.
But what about all the benefits of political correctness, I hear you say.
There is now more equality between the sexes, a more tolerant attitude towards sexuality and greater awareness of racial discrimination, we are told.
But that only furthers my theory. For the social progress we have made since the dark, ignorant days of the 1970s – which didn’t seem either dark or ignorant at the time – have been little more than common sense.
As human beings, we are more than capable of realising there is no innate superiority in being either male or female, our version of ‘normal’ is not everybody else’s and the colour of our skin is irrelevant to our character and abilities.
But the salesmen behind political correctness were always going to begin with ideas that would be easily stomached before introducing us to the ludicrous tosh that pass for enlightenment today.
If people are not allowed to show their appreciation and support by making a noise, what next?
Should we all confine ourselves to wheelchairs so non-walkers aren’t seen to miss out?
Or only write in words of one syllable to appease dyslexics?
Even the so-called benefits are proving to be false.
For the more we focus attention on labels such as ‘male’, ‘female’, ‘heterosexual’, ‘homosexual’, ‘white’ and ‘black’, the more divided and confused we have become.
It is no longer ‘a battle of the sexes’ but males and females both feeling embattled within their separate identities. More and more folk are becoming paranoid about what our ‘roles’ should be – and feeling we are failing miserably compared with heavily contrived, photoshopped role models.
The fast-increasing attention on ‘transgender’ is accentuating the division to even greater lengths with young people being encouraged to come to conclusions about their sexual identity earlier and earlier.
In some areas, the minority groups themselves have become almost irrelevant to the social engineers.
Numbers of gay couples becoming legally married in England barely suggest there was a war cry for change from the community itself.
In the same way where councils dumb down Christmas, this is never a result of followers of alternative religions having their say. In contrast, they think it’s stupid that an apparently Christian country doesn’t back its own religious festivals.
Everywhere you look the ‘fruits’ of political correctness tell a far more sinister story than the laughter and disbelief accorded to Manchester’s students.
Comedy and satire are retreating within safe, sanitised, boring boundaries except for the alternative media which is unsurprisingly coming under greater attack.
The sexes relate to each more and more uneasily amid concerns over ‘what is she going to think about this in 40 years?’ rather than the morning after.
Racial tensions are on the rise as perception spreads that being ‘white’ and ‘British’ are two distinct disadvantages.
What was once ‘racial discrimination’ and needed to be addressed has become ‘racism’ that is often nonsensical. What could possibly be the problem in identifying the characteristics of different races and cultures, if we do it with respect and good humour?
I am more than willing to laugh at sometimes absurd aspects of being ‘British’ and expect others to have the capacity to do the same.
And so to religion. If Christianity can be lampooned, why not every other belief system?
It is by going down the rickety staircase of political correctness that we now find ourselves tongue tied whilst Zionists commit unspeakable atrocities.
Ordinary people tread on eggshells unsure whether the language they are using today will still be acceptable tomorrow.
Those who don’t conform to a standard size and weight are castigated for draining the economy when they have paid into the NHS all their lives.
Political correctness has not made us more respectful and loving to each other and at ease within ourselves. Infact the exact opposite.
Tavistock’s spin doctors are rubbing their hands with glee. With each word that is deemed politically incorrect banished from the verbal landscape, our means of protest is weakened.
We are walking round and round in ever decreasing circles, yes calling out the ‘madness’ of political correctness but seemingly unable to halt its progression.
Just consider the state we would be in now had we been encouraged to break away from ‘labels’ rather than become obsessed and entangled by them.
As human beings, we have the emotional intelligence to treat our brothers and sisters throughout the world with respect and generosity not because we are forced to but because that is our natural way.
Instead of curbing our talents and spontaneity because others don’t share the same gifts, we need to clap, clap and clap some more when we hear people speak common sense.
It’s time to rise up against the dark arts of Tavistock and call a spade a spade.
Next time you think ‘I can’t say or do that because it’s not PC’, stop yourself and just do it!
You’ll find more and more folk secretly at least cheering you on.
