'A Spanish judge has ordered nine ex-members of the government in Catalonia jailed while they are investigated on possible charges of sedition, rebellion and embezzlement.
After a hearing which Carles Puigdemont, Catalonia’s deposed president, and four other former regional ministers refused to attend, the investigating judge at Madrid’s high court acceded to the prosecutor’s request that the nine erstwhile Catalan officials be placed in preventive custody.
One of the nine, Santi Vila, will be allowed to leave the courthouse if he pays €50,000 bail. Mr Vila resigned from the Puigdemont government on the eve of Catalonia’s declaration of independence.
Spain's state prosecutor on Thursday asked a High Court judge to issue a European arrest warrant for ousted Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont after he failed to appear at a court hearing earlier in the day.
Mr Puigdemont's lawyer in Belgium, where he has travelled with four members of his sacked cabinet, said the climate in Spain was "not good" and his client wanted to maintain some distance; but he would cooperate with the courts.'
