Lord McAlpine answering a brief question on BBC radio about why he didn't sue Scallywag magazine in the 1990s when they accused him of being a paedophile connected to the children's home abuse scandal in North Wales.

'Becky Milligan: There were these allegations in a magazine called Scallywag, a while back. Do you wish you'd dealt with them then? Or why didn't you?

Lord McAlpine: Well they were dealt with – Scallywag went bankrupt, they stopped. Then in the investigation in to these homes in Wales, the Judge took out an injunction to stop people naming people whose names were raised in the course of evidence, er, at that time, some of the press reporting said there were, there was dark figures, there were rumours, counter-rumours. Nobody knows where these rumours came from.'

Scallywag was not dealt with by you, McAlpine, at all, or Thatcher aide Derek Laud who was also accused of paedophilia in the same article. Scallywag eventually went out of business after Prime Minister John Major did sue them over reporting rumours of him having an affair which later turned out to be essentially TRUE - and after legal attacks on distributors orchestrated from Conservative Party headquarters.

This had the effect of shutting down Scallywag which so many in power were desperate to do.

John Major, a sitting Prime Minister, sued Scallywag for printing rumours of an affair when he was actually having one with MP Edwina Currie and yet you didn't sue them McAlpine with all your money for the shocking allegations made against you in the 1990s that made the ones against Major pale into insignificance??

The question still stands and it has not been credibly answered: Why not?
