Father beaten to death by drunken youths

A FATHER-of-four has been beaten to death in a quiet Yorkshire street after confronting a group of drunken youths who were making a noise outside his house late at night.

The devastated relatives of Craig Wass described how he was attacked with a brick, golf clubs and pieces of wood in a frenzied assault at around 11.30pm on Saturday.

Mr Wass, 39, lived just a few yards from where he was found bleeding by police. He is the latest in a series of men who have died after confronting rowdy youths.

It is understood the gang who attacked Mr Wass had been drinking and were disturbing residents in Phillips Road, Loxley, Sheffield, by shouting.

The victim's niece Katie Wass, 16, who lives nearby with her parents, said she watched as her uncle tried to talk to the group.

Miss Wass added: "He just came out of the house to tell them to be quiet and they started beating him up. One had a golf club and another had ripped a plank from the fence.

"Then I saw one of them pick up a brick and he just hit my uncle at the back of the head with it. He fell down in the road and didn't get back up. Then my nan came out to help him.

"He just died in my nan's arms. There was nothing that any of us could do. He was planning to get married in two weeks time and now that is not going to happen. It's horrible."

The victim's parents, Fred and Christine Wass, also live in Phillips Road, in sight of the scene of the crime, and other members of the family live in the surrounding streets.

Mrs Wass yesterday said she was too upset to talk about what had happened, and the victim's family said his partner, Andrea Grundy, was with police.

Officers said Mr Wass was taken to the city's Northern General Hospital after they were called, but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Three local men, in their late teens, were arrested on suspicion of murder shortly after the incident. A fourth teenager was arrested later and released without charge. Police are looking for another teenager.

A cul-de-sac area at the top of Phillips Road was cordoned off with police tape yesterday.

Neighbour and former city councillor Ray Couldwell, 83, whose bungalow backs onto the street where Mr Wass was found, said: "This is just like a little village, we do get some lads playing football in the street sometimes but it's a good community.

"There has been nothing that could have led up to somebody being killed in the street. We are all just extremely shocked."

The death of Mr Wass follows the murder of 47-year-old father-of-three Garry Newlove, who was beaten to death by three teenagers outside his home in Warrington in 2007.

Peter Woodhams, 22, the father of a three-year-old boy, was also killed after remonstrating with youths in Canning Town, east London, in August 2006.

Devoted father Kevin Johnson, 22, was stabbed through the heart after remonstrating with three teenagers who had woken up his baby son Chase.

But his family say the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority ruled that Kevin contributed to his own death because he had gone out into the street to confront the yobs.
