For a plant to grow it needs light, either the gentleman concerned is translucent or someone is telling fibs. It seems like one of those stories that get told over generations that you hear as a kid.

A PERFORMANCE artist is set to give Scots a glimpse of the ear he has had implanted in his arm.

Stelarc is performing twice at the Edinburgh Science Festival this week.

His ear was grown in a lab and surgically implanted in 2007. It is a centrepiece of his Alternate Anatomical Architectures show.

The 62-year-old plans to have it fitted with a Bluetooth microphone so people can listen to what he's doing over the internet.

Stelarc, 62, said: "The ear is a permanent part of me now, as after six months it becomes fused to the arm and has its own blood supply.

"The final procedure will implant a miniature microphone to enable a wireless connection to the internet, making the ear a remote listening device.

"This project has been about replicating a bodily structure, relocating it and now rewiring it for alternate functions.

"We've evolved soft internal organs to better operate and interact with the world.

"Now, we can engineer additional and external organs to better function in the technological and media terrain we now inhabit."

Stelarc's past stunts include being suspended naked above a New York street on large hooks embedded in his skin, He has also let his body be remote-controlled over the internet by muscle stimulators.

Ingi Helgason, from Napier University's centre for interaction design, helped bring Stelarc to the festival.

She said: "Stelarc's work aims to connect people through technology and shows the impact it can have on our lives.

"People can be connected through social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook, and this is almost a more extreme extension of that."

Stelarc - real name Stelios Arcadiou - is a visiting professor at Brunel University's art school. His show starts at The Hub tomorrow.

It reminds me of ths story about the POWs in Vietnam... the Viet Cong would cut open their stomachs and stick a bamboo plant in there so it would grow out of them and cause exruciating pain (bamboo grows quite rapidly) I still dont understand how this can be done without sunlight???

It may of started to sprout. The seed doesnt need light to begin with so technically speaking,a fir tree could of been growing inside him.
Classic example of using selective wording to trigger off the imagination.
