BREAKING NOW Dozens Killed In Gaza Attacks

Palestinians say Israeli F-16 bombers have launched a series of air strikes against key targets in the Gaza Strip, killing and injuring dozens of people.

Missiles destroyed security compounds run by the militant group Hamas in the centre of Gaza City, killing at least 120 people, Hamas officials said.

The strikes, the most intense Israeli attacks on Gaza in recent times, come after the expiry of a truce with Hamas.

Israel had threatened an offensive to stop the firing of rockets from Gaza.

Israel confirmed the strikes, saying they were launched in response to continued rocket fire by Palestinian militants against Israeli towns.

They targeted "Hamas terror operatives" as well as training camps and weaponry storage warehouses, the country's military said in a statement.

Hamas quickly vowed to carry out revenge attacks on Israel in response to the air strikes.

In the West Bank, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas - whose Fatah faction was ousted from Gaza by Hamas in 2007 - condemned the attacks and called for restraint.

Offensive planned?

Reports of the casualties in Gaza mounted swiftly after news broke of the Israeli operation.

Palestinian militant group Hamas, which controls Gaza, initially said at least 40 people had been killed when a missile hit security headquarters in and around Gaza City.

That figure quickly rose, Hamas saying 120 were killed and some 400 people injured, the BBC Katya Adler reports from Jerusalem.

Medics in Gaza also reported high casualties, saying 120 people died in Gaza City and 23 in the southern city of Khan Younis, Reuters news agency said.

"Most security headquarters in Gaza were completely destroyed in the Zionist shelling," the Hamas-run al-Aqsa TV station said.

The air strikes are the most intense Israel has launched against Gaza for some time, and come amid rumours that that a ground operation is imminent.

Israeli security officials have been briefing about the possibility of a new offensive into Gaza for some days now, says the BBC's Paul Wood, in Jerusalem.

But most reports centred on the possibility of a ground offensive, and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was not expected to authorise any operation until Sunday at the earliest.

At least 140 people are believed to have been killed after Israel launched a series of air strikes on Hamas security compounds in Gaza City.

The head of Gaza's ambulance service added that 200 people had been wounded after Israel fired around 30 missiles.

Thick black smoke billowed over the city following the attacks, which are thought to have destroyed most of the police headquarters in the city.

Many Hamas security compounds are in residential areas, and the airstrikes took place as children were leaving school.

One police compound was hosting a graduation ceremony for new personnel when it was attacked.

The dead include police chief Tawfiq Jabber, Hamas radio reported.

The attacks followed a decision by Israel's security cabinet to strike back after renewed rocket attacks from Gaza on Israeli border towns.

The Israeli military confirmed they had conducted strikes, saying they targeted "terrorist infrastructure".

A spokesman said: "Our aviation intervened massively against Hamas infrastructure in the Gaza Strip to stop the terrorist attacks of the past several weeks against Israeli civilian installations.

"We had warned the civilian population in the Gaza Strip of our attacks and Hamas, which hides within this population, is solely responsible for this situation.

"Our operations will continue and will be expanded if necessary."

Hamas and other Palestinian factions have ordered their troops to avenge the attack.

A statement from Islamic Jihad said: "All fighters are ordered to respond to the Israeli slaughter."

The attacks follow the end of a six-month truce between the two sides.

Sky correspondent Rachel Younger said: "Hamas blamed Israel for that collapse.

"They said Israel was not letting enough food and medical suppliers through into Gaza."

She added that the role of Egypt would now be vital, as the Egyptians "feel Hamas has been ignoring their efforts to broker a peace deal."

Undercover Israelis have been firing those ineffective rockets on to wasteland for some years now. They are using that as an excuse to wipe out the people of Gaza having starved them for the past six months with their blockade.

yep this definately could do. Both israel and iran have been flexing their miscles for a few months now, even longer if you look back at Gulf War 1. This might just be the nudge that Iran have been waiting for.

Counter attacks eh? And I heard the attacks will expand and/ or intensify from Israeli side as well. With the brewing tensions between India and Pakistan at the same time we may be looking at a full scale war in the middle-east shortly, which is exactly what the agenda wants.
