In A Question of Torture, historian Alfred W. McCoy tracks the nightmarish world of the CIA’s Project ARTICHOKE and its later metastasis, MKULTRA through two distinct, though overlapping phases:

First, esoteric, often bizarre experiments with hypnosis and hallucinogenic drugs, from 1950 to 1956; then, more conventional research into human psychology until 1963 when the agency compiled the fruits of this costly investigation in a definitive interrogation manual.1

As revelations emerge that top Bush administration officials gave the intelligence “community” and Pentagon a “green light” to torture, evidence mounts that CIA and Special Operations Command interrogators used mind-altering drugs on prisoners subjected to coercive interrogations.

According to a report published in Tuesday’s Washington Post,

At least two dozen… former and current detainees at Guantánamo Bay and elsewhere say they were given drugs against their will or witnessed other inmates being drugged, based on interviews and court documents.

Like [Adel al-] Nusairi, other detainees believed the injections were intended to coerce confessions.2

The Pentagon and the CIA deny the charges, claiming that the stories are “either fabrications or mistaken interpretations of routine medical treatment,” Warrick reports.

However, the allegations have returned with a vengeance after this month’s release of a Justice Department memo that explicitly approved the use of drugs on prisoners.

The March 2003 memo, penned by Office of Legal Counsel attorney John Yoo, rejected a decades-old ban on the use of “mind-altering substances,” on prisoners. Yoo argued that drugs could be used provided they did not inflict permanent and “profound” psychological damage. The memo claims that U.S. law, as interpreted by Bushist torture enablers, “does not preclude any and all use of drugs.”

When coupled with “reverse-engineered” interrogation techniques derived from the military’s Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) program, the forced drugging of detainees at Guantánamo Bay’s Camp Delta detention facility and CIA “black sites,” all but guarantee a regime of “profound” psychological torture.

In a report published earlier this month, Congressional Quarterly‘s Jeff Stein reports,

‘The new Yoo memo, along with other White House legal memoranda, shows clearly that the policy foundation for the use of interrogational drugs was being laid,’ says Stephen Miles, a University of Minnesota bioethicist and author of ‘Oath Betrayed: Torture, Medical Complicity, and the War on Terror.’ ‘The recent memo on mood-altering drugs does not extend previous work on this area,’ he said. ‘The use of these drugs was anticipated and discussed in the memos of January and February 2002 by DoD, DoJ, and White House counsel using the same language and rationale. The executive branch memos laid a comprehensive and reiterated policy foundation for the use of interrogational drugs.’3

With a “green light” from the administration, Guantánamo Bay torturers’ got what they wanted from Adel al-Nusairi: a forced “confession.” A former Saudi policeman captured in 2002 by U.S. forces in Afghanistan, el-Nusairi told his attorney during an interview at America’s premier gulag, that after hours of interrogation, always preceded by an injection of an unknown drug, his interrogators would rouse him from a fitful sleep–for more questions.

“I was completely gone,” he remembered. “I said, ‘Let me go. I want to go to sleep. If it takes saying I’m a member of al-Qaeda, I will,” according to the Washington Post.

As documented by investigative reporter Stephen Grey in Ghost Plane, prisoners destined for CIA “black sites” or other notorious dungeons in Central Asia or the Middle East, were administered sedatives by “rendition teams” to “calm” their shackled and hooded victims.

These new reports suggest that upon arrival, suspected “terrorists”–real or imaginary–have been drugged as an integral element of their “enhanced interrogation” experience.

French national Mourad Benchellali, a Guantánamo prisoner for three years related how after being administered “medicine” or “vitamins” by his captors said that “these medicines gave us headaches, nausea, drowsiness,” Benchellali wrote in an e-mail to the Washington Post. “But the effects were different for different detainees. Some fainted or threw up. Some had reactions such as pimples.”

But then there were periods when things were demonstrably worse. Benchellali described that periodic injections, “often administered by force,” left him by degrees, feeling nauseated and light-headed. “We were always tired and always felt groggy.”

Benchellali related to Warrick how “a different type of injection seemed to be reserved for detainees who were particularly uncooperative.” The former prisoner described episodes also related by four other detainees in interviews or court documents, of a particularly chilling quality. “The injection would make them crazy. They would have a crisis or dementia — yelling, no longer sleeping, soiling themselves. Some of us suspected they were given LSD.”

As did the attorney representing accused “dirty bomber” Jose Padilla during his three year stint as an “enemy combatant” in a naval brig.

Michael Caruso, the chief federal defender who represented Padilla asserted in a motion last year that his client “was given drugs against his will, believed to be some form of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) or phencyclidine (PCP), to act as a sort of truth serum during his interrogations,” according to Congressional Quarterly‘s Jeff Stein.

Nor would it be the first time the U.S. government used drugs as a means to induce a “confession” from a “resistant subject.” The CIA’s KUBARK Counterintelligence Interrogation manual, has this to say:

Drugs can be effective in overcoming resistance not dissolved by other techniques. As has already been noted, the so-called silent drug (a pharmacologically potent substance given to a person unaware of its administration) can make possible the induction of hypnotic trance in a previously unwilling subject. …

Particularly important is the reference to matching the drug to the personality of the interrogatee. The effect of most drugs depends more upon the personality of the subject than upon the physical characteristics of the drugs themselves. If the approval of Headquarters has been obtained and if a doctor is at hand for administration, one of the most important of the interrogator’s functions is providing the doctor with a full and accurate description of the psychological make-up of the interrogatee, to facilitate the best possible choice of a drug.

Persons burdened with feelings of shame or guilt are likely to unburden themselves when drugged, especially if these feelings have been reinforced by the interrogator. And like the placebo, the drug provides an excellent rationalization of helplessness for the interrogatee who wants to yield but has hitherto been unable to violate his own values or loyalties.

Like other coercive media, drugs may affect the content of what an interrogatee divulges. Gottschalk notes that certain drugs “may give rise to psychotic manifestations such as hallucinations, illusions, delusions, or disorientation”, so that “the verbal material obtained cannot always be considered valid.” For this reason drugs (and the other aids discussed in this section) should not be used persistently to facilitate the interrogative debriefing that follows capitulation. Their function is to cause capitulation, to aid in the shift from resistance to cooperation. Once this shift has been accomplished, coercive techniques should be abandoned both for moral reasons and because they are unnecessary and even counter-productive.4 [emphasis added]

Note the emphasis above: if a doctor is at hand for administration. Which inevitably gives rise to the question: were physicians or other health care professionals present during torture sessions? The answer unfortunately, may be “yes.”

According to psychoanalyst Stephen Soldz, a fierce critic of the American Psychological Association’s (APA) cozy relationship with the CIA and Pentagon throughout Washington’s “war on terror,” some APA members advised interrogators on the most “effective” techniques to psychologically “break” detainees. Soldz writes,

At this point it is unknown if psychologists are involved as among those “health” professionals who involuntarily administered drugs. But we should remember that, thanks partly to military support, a number of psychologists can now legally prescribe drugs. And some of those prescribing psychologists were with the Behavioral Science Consultation Teams [BSCTs] at Guantánamo. It also should be remembered that in 2003 the American Psychological Association co-sponsored with the CIA an invitation-only Science of Deception Workshop that discussed, among other topics, “What pharmacological agents are known to affect apparent truth-telling behavior?” CIA consultant torturers James Mitchell and Bruce Jessen were among those invited to attend, as were several of their superiors.5

As Washington’s “bad apples”–wide swathes of the national security apparatus–”took the gloves off” and went to “work the dark side” as vice president Dick Cheney recommended shortly after the September 11 attacks, those with “boots on the ground,” CIA officers, Special Forces operators and mercenary contractors, inevitably complied.

Just as inevitably, new documents–and ever-more revelatory horrors–will emerge, a steady drip, drip, drip from the suppurating wound that is the “post-Constitutional” order created by the rogue Bush regime.

The United Methodist Church, Torture and President Bush
On April 11, three days after Southern Methodist University President R. Gerald Turner sent a letter to all the delegates to the South Central Jurisdictional Conference of the United Methodist Church (UMC) extolling the supposed financial advantages and other virtues of the Bush library and partisan think-tank, George W. Bush announced to the media that he has been deeply involved from the beginning in the details of the use of torture that he authorized.
ABC News reported: “President Bush says he knew his top national security advisers discussed and approved specific details about how high-value al Qaeda suspects would be interrogated by the Central Intelligence Agency.” According to White House sources, the discussions about torture techniques were so detailed that some of the “interrogation sessions were almost choreographed” (1-2).
A month earlier, on March 8, Bush vetoed legislation banning waterboarding and other methods of torture used by government employees. The legislation would have limited CIA agents to 19 less-aggressive tactics outlined in the U.S. Army field manual. The president stated that the government “needs to use tougher methods than the U.S. military to wrest information from terrorism suspects” (3). It has been highly documented that at least 19 prisoners have been tortured to death by the U.S. military (4).
Waterboarding has a long and sickening history. It was used as a means of torture and coerced baptism during the Protestant Reformation and Spanish Inquisition to convert Jews, Mennonites, witches, and other suspected heretics. It consists of immobilizing an individual on his or her back with the head inclined downward and pouring water over the face to force the inhalation of water into the lungs. As the victim gags and chokes, the terror of imminent death is pervasive.
Torture is a crime against humanity and a violation of every human rights treaty in existence. It represents a betrayal of the deepest values of the UMC that founded and built SMU. In the supposedly “less enlightened” 18th century, John Wesley explicitly preached against the torture of prisoners of war:

War itself is justifiable only on principles of self-preservation: Therefore it gives us no right over prisoners, but to hinder their hurting us by confining them. Much less can it give a right to torture, or kill, or even to enslave an enemy when the war is over (5).

Bush, who claims to be a “proud Methodist,” shows no sign of contrition or regret or repentance for his unchristian behavior. To the contrary, he continues to try to justify himself and protect those in our government who have used and continue to use torture. Lutheran pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer in Nazi Germany rightly called the cowardliness of Christians to make evil-doers accountable for their wicked deeds “cheap grace.” Building a monument to this torturer-in-chief on a UMC campus to “celebrate this great president, celebrate his accomplishments” (6) is a defilement of our church that will permanently damage our credibility to share the good news of Jesus Christ.

I mentioned earlier in this thread my thoughts that many secret underground cities or bases could likely be situated
near places with geothermally heated hot springs and/or geothermally heated caves .

I was reading up months ago about the suspected underground city under construction at Denver International Airport and looked into geothermal spots in and around Denver, Colorado.

Denver Colorado is SURROUNDED by geothermal hot springs and caves.

I suspect that the entire region of Denver sits near/upon a geothermal 'hot zone' , so it is conceivable that this hidden base underneath the airport in the East end of Denver is naturally heated.

Is it just me, or is the Wizard of Oz prequel film sounding better and better? Mila Kunis (Black Swan) is the most recent addition to the cast. According to Variety, Mila Kunis has agreed to the part of Theodora in Oz: the Great and Powerful. The film, set up as a prequel to the Wizard of Oz books and movies that the world is familiar with, chronicles the story of the snake-oil salesman caught in a Kansas tornado who becomes the Wizard of Oz himself.

James Franco is set to play the part of the Wizard; Theodora will be the sister of Glinda, the good witch. After the Wizard rejects her advances Theodora is turned to the dark side, to become the Wicked Witch herself.

The Oz stories have been through a lot of revisions. The initial series of children's books by L. Frank Baum introduced the Land of Oz in 1900; Baum went on to continue the series through 13 sequels. There was a popular stage version in 1902, and of course the iconic Wizard of Oz movie from 1939, starring Judy Garland as Dorothy. And let's not forget The Wiz, the 1978 disco-themed revamp of the original Wizard movie or 1985's Return to Oz starring Fairuza Balk.

While the books have remained popular throughout the world and the 1939 movie is a classic; there has been a recent resurgence in Oz that can be traced to Gregory Maguire's bestselling book Wicked. Wicked took the land of Oz during Dorothy's initial visit and turned it on its head, telling the story from the Wicked Witch of the West's point of view. This was then translated into a massively successful Broadway stage production (in which there were very few serious accidents. Spider-Man, we're looking at you.) Even the Syfy channel got in on the action, putting Zooey Deschanel in the lead role in a parallel-universe reinterpretation of the land of Oz called Tin Man.

Upcoming interpretations abound: in the Witches of Oz, due out this year, the Wicked Witch of the West lands in Times Square (like in Enchanted?); then there is a new animated version (2011), the Drew Barrymore-directed Surrender Dorothy (2011); the animated musical Dorothy of Oz (2012) starring Lea Michele; another film called Oz: Return to the Emerald City (2012); and both a tv mini-series and a feature film based on the musical Wicked.

All of these revamps and reinterpretations of the original Wizard stories appeal, if only through their ability to show us characters that have become part of the cultural framework in a new light. In that sense, Oz: the Great and Powerful is shaping up to be a great and powerful film. With Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, Evil Dead) at the helm, reunited with the always-pleasing-except-maybe-at-the-Oscars James Franco, and now Mila Kunis, the film has potential for real greatness.

Last we heard, Johnny Depp was in line to replace Robert Downey Jr. as the Wizard in director Sam Raimi‘s upcoming new take on the tale of The Wizard of Oz, being called Oz, The Great and Powerful.

Not long after that, Depp also removed himself from the project, making it one of those annoying situations where every name you could think of was likely to become attached. Instead, the next to be offered the role was James Franco, and at the moment this looks to be a done deal. As good as Franco is, it is still a step down from Depp, who was himself a step down from Downey Jr., who seemed to be the perfect fit as the man who finds himself swept away to the magical lands of Oz, where he solidifies himself as an all-powerful wizard.

As it turns out, it took a little bit of sway in the form of another casting to lock up Franco’s services. Walt Disney was able to reach out to Black Swan star Mila Kunis and lure her away from the live-action Akira remake to play their Wicked Witch of the West. It was this move that gave Franco the confidence to commit to the film as well — either that or he really likes him some Mila Kunis. And who could blame him.

When CBS Los Angeles reporter Serene Branson started speaking gibberish during her live post-Grammys segment, many viewers feared that she'd had a stroke on the air. Thankfully, we've learned that it wasn't so serious. On Thursday, Branson's doctor told The Los Angeles Times that the reporter had not suffered a stroke, but a complex migraine.

Emmy-winning journalist Branson looked totally put together during her telecast, but she stumbled over her sentences and then started speaking nonsensical syllables. According to Dr. Neil Martin, who later saw Branson at the UCLA Medical Center, the reporter had a "complex migraine" -- a headache with similar symptoms to a stroke, including weakness, loss of vision and difficulty speaking. Unlike a stroke, which can result in permanent speech impairment, the symptoms of a complex migraine are nearly always temporary.

According to the CBS 2 website, Branson is "feeling better" and "hopes to be back on the air very soon." We wish her a quick and full recovery. (Watch Today's report on the story below!)

"CIA observers everywhere choked when CNN announced that a psychological trauma team, mustered by the American Psychological Association, would converge in Oklahoma City to treat survivors of the explosion and the victims’ families–led by none other than Dr. Louis Jolyon West of UCLA’s Neuropsychiatric Institute, the breeding ground of some of the most necrotizing Dr. Strangeloves in the mind-control business. Alumni emeritus of the Institute include Dr. Ross Adey, a former NASA brain scientist with much experience working alongside Nazi doctors who resettled in the U.S. after the war....

"Dr. West is a sinister creation of the Agency’s mind-control fraternity. Among other totalitarian projects, he has studied the use of drugs as "adjuncts to interpersonal manipulation or assault," and employed pioneers in the field of remote electronic brain experimentation at UCLA.

"West has recommended to federal officials that drugs be used to control "bothersome" political segments of the population:

"’This method, foreseen by Aldous Huxley [in Brave New World (1932)], has the governing element employing drugs selectively to manipulate the governed in various ways. In fact, it may be more convenient and perhaps even more economical to keep the growing numbers of chronic drug users (especially of the hallucinogens) fairly isolated and also out of the labor market, with its millions of unemployed.

"’To society, the communards with their hallucinogenic drugs are probably less bothersome–and less expensive–if they are living apart than if they are engaging in alternative modes of expressing their alienation, such as active, organized, vigorous political protest and dissent.’"

Another cite concerning the signally fascistic Dr. West: "In ‘Pseudo-Identity and the Treatment of Personality Change in Victims of Captivity and Cults’ (1994), Dr. Louis ‘Jolly’ West examines the creation of "changelings," or dissociative personalities that enable the subject of mind-control conditioning to adapt to trauma. ‘Prolonged environmental stress,’

UCLA’s own ranking CIA mind-control specialist observed (in a drastic departure from the public stance of the False Memory Syndrome Foundation, an organization he formerly directed as an advisory board member, on multiplicity), ‘or life situations profoundly different from the usual, can disrupt the normally integrative functions of personality. Individuals subjected to such forces may adapt through dissociation by generating an altered persona, or pseudo-identity.’ "Patricia Hearst (examined by Dr. West for trial) hosted an alternate personality named ‘Pearl,’ he offers, a manifestation more distinct and individuated than ‘Tania.’

The newspaper heiress was subjected to a regimen of ‘persuasive coercion’ (a very personal form of harassment by an organized group, any form of intimidation short of violence) and trauma-induced programmimg (of a sort developed by CIA specialists like Dr. West) - ‘violently abducted by members of the [CIA-mustered] Symbionese Liberation Army in February of 1974, brutalized, raped, tortured, and forced to participate in illegal acts beginning with the bank robbery for which she was later (in our view wrongly) convicted. The traumatic kidnapping and subsequent 2 months of torture produced in her a state of emotional regression and fearful compliance with the demands and expectations of her captors. This was quickly followed by the coerced transformation of Patty into Tania and subsequently (less well known to the public) into Pearl, after additional trauma over a period of many months (Hearst & Moscow, 1988; The Trial of Patty Hearst, 1976). Tania was merely a role coerced on pain of death; it was Pearl who later represented the pseudo-identity which was found on psychiatric examination by one of us (West) shortly afterHearst’s arrest by the FBI. Chronic symptoms of PTSD were also prominent in this case.’"

J.S.: At the ISSD conference, the keynote speaker, Stephen Marmer, began his terrible talk with references to his mentors at UCLA. One of them was West. Then another person I know mentioned knowing Margaret Singer, and thinks she "doesn’t understand the basis of mind control very well."

A.C.: She understands it with Panavision clarity. Singer, who worked with Jolly at the community-based Haight-Ashbury LSD culture lab, hails from the Fund for Human Ecology days when she worked on CIA "brainwashing" projects with Robert Jay Lifton, another "scholar," the author of The Nazi Doctors, which is short on names and long on the study of converting medical professionals into Nazi sadists. She has also been on the board of the American Family Foundation (AFF), another appendage of the CFF, a particularly oily, very "right-wing" CIA dummy front. Singer has been involved with the Theological Seminary in Berkeley; the university is the home of much mind-control chaos in California, ala Jim Jones.

J.S.: I had heard that she understands all too well, but from the wrong side. Anyway, I’m trying to sort out the truth from the rumor mill, which is quite a daunting task. Also, what do you know about the origins of Cult Awareness Network?

A.C.: CAN was as vile a coalition of mind-control types as you will find this side of the False Memory Syndrome Foundation. The Cult Awareness Network was founded in 1974, incorporated under the name Citizens Freedom Foundation (CFF). The CFF officially changed its name to CAN in 1986.CAN’s founder was Ted Patrick, a known crony of the sinister Ronald Reagan. The CAN network was run for a spell by Patricia Ryan, the daughter of Leo Ryan, a cruel irony considering the central role of the CIA in the Jones cult’s formation and grotesque human ruins. Patrick was a three-time felon. "investigator" Steve Hassan, the national coordinator of FOCUS, a CAN affiliate group, is still an active spin doctor and "deprogrammer." You can find him on the Web.

In West Virginia, CAN leader John Overington, a state legislator, was an advocate of Oliver North and the Iran-Contra crowd. (He also sponsored a bill that would force all X-rated peep-show parlors to install bathrooms.) CAN president Rev. Michael Rokoswas forced to step down after it leaked out that he’d been arrested for soliciting young male prostitutes. The arrest report, filed by police cadet Joseph Wyatt, 22, working undercover at the time of the arrest, mentions that Rokos told the officer, "I want you to go home with me. I want you to tie me up, put clothes pins on my nipples and make me suck your d**k."

CAN Doctors West and Singer were both feted by the Cult Awareness Network when it was a going concern, a spin-off of the CFF, a known CIA appendage. Singer and CAN exploited the Branch Davidian stand-off in Waco to promote an alternate history of cult activity, one that excluded discussion of the intelligence services and the federal mind-control initiative. After the conflagration in Waco, Dr. West told reporters that the FBI’s handling of the crisis was "terrific, outstanding."

Cynthia Kisser, the executive director of CAN, was once a topless dancer and rushed to the defense of pedophiles in Omaha, Nebraska. That was about the caliber of the organization’s leadership. Over in CAN’s security division, you found Larry Kahaner, a private investigator in Alexandria, Virginia, and Galen Kelley, who was close with the FBI, and once boasted that one of his responsibilities was to keep CAN members "in line."

J.S.: Do you think the takeover by Scientology was orchestrated, or a coincidence after the loss of the lawsuit?

A.C.: Certainly no coincidence on the part of Scientology. The church has long agitated against CAN and ostensibly ran the organization into the hole. But I think CAN members had to bail out because they were becoming notorious. Their reputations were catching up with them, and cult victims weren’t buying the BS at CAN’s end of the false dialectic designed to distract us from the fact that many cults and anti-cult cults are ultimately the creation of the intelligence sector.
