Picked up an interesting book from the national gallery yesterday
Symbols and allegories in art It might be a trifle basic for some, but give the amount of symbolisim on these Boards I reckon it's a good place to start. That's aside from it's intended purpose of enhancing someone's understanding of art, of course.

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by M Bernard Eldershaw. Written in 1942 by two Australian women. Science fiction set 400 years into the future interposed with life in Australia during the pre war and WW2 era. Life in the future is scientifically controlled. A health certificate is needed for marriage. People work in Community Services from age 18 to 28 and then they retire. This 10 year period leads to a breaking of family bonding because people are located far from home and do not visit during that time. Everyone has everything they need. The only family farmers are those who have specialist crops or items that are difficult to grow. Only the best are selected to progress the scientific society but the youth are restless and want liberty and choice...because they realise the 'best' are the children of those who are already in control.
This book was heavily censored and the full version was not published until 1983. Both authors were pacifists and left wing but I get the impression from their bio's that they wree not supporters of the intended regime. Eldershaw worked in the Commonwealth post war office with Nugget Coombs (London School of Economics) so she would have been privy to the Fabian agenda which sticks out a mile. They speak at length about war being a racket, fabricated and planned when the capitalists need an inflow of money and how Governments use propaganda to ramp up fear to capture the support of the people for the war. Everything we see and hear today is written in this book which I found at a junk sale. It seemed to be saying 'pick me' pick me'.

Thanks, I have nearly finished. The Socialists end up burning Sydney and the other capital cities to the ground. They let all the zoo animals out, destroyed all the art works and monuments. Each person could only take 6 pounds of personal goods such as clothes, shoes pots and pans. They even blew up the Sydney harbor bridge. Just a few pages to go. Will keep you posted.

Mind to mind. by Betty shine.
Her extraordinary gifts - a clairvoyant ability to diagnose medically, her healing powers and her discovery of 'Mind Energy' - have made her one of Britain's foremost healers. Mind to Mind tells her story. Like Betty herself, it is cheerful, down-to-earth and full of humour. It reveals how she became aware of her gifts and how she has used her experiences of mind energy to help others. Illustrated with a wide variety of examples and case histories, this is a uniquely helpful and practical book by a woman whose powers have been a comfort to countless numbers of people. As well as the above, she also taught vitamin and mineral therapy, hand analysis and Yoga. Mind power is simply imagination; and how powerful a tool it can be to change your thoughts, and indeed, your reality. The book is literally packed with simple techniques on all she knows. All in all, i'd say it's inspirational. ![]() Mind Magic. by Betty Shine. Since her first book, MIND TO MIND, was published in 1989, Betty Shine has been inundated with letters of thanks and appreciation. Her extraordinary message has touched hearts and changed lives the world over. As her reputation has grown, it has become impossible for Betty to treat personally the thousands of people who look to her for help. So it is a natural extension of her talks, lectures and private consultaions that she has written MIND MAGIC, a self help guide that will enable everyone to experience the benefits of mind energy and healing - for themselves and for the good of others. At the core of MIND MAGIC is a series of exercises and projects devised, tried and tested by Betty herself. Though all have been designed to develop the imagination and renew mind energy, each has an additional specific aim, ranging from stress management to memory enhancement. Bulit around these disciplines is a mass of practical advice on vitamin and mineral intake, colour therapy, the power of positive thinking and a host of othe topics. A handbook for the soul, a guide to health and happiness, a manual for living in te modern world, MIND MAGIC is a valuable and singular contribution to New Age literature. My feelings about the book? Same as the one above, if not more so.

The PK man. by Jeffrey Mishlove, Ph,D.
"One evening late in December 1985, Ted Owens phoned Jeffrey Mishlove to warn im in an angry voice that the U.S goverment must cancel the next space shuttle flight. 'This is the most important call you will ever recieve,' Owns said, 'The S.I.s (space intelligences) really mean business. They will destroy the shuttle. It's up to you to prevent it.' A month later, on January 28th, 1986, Mishlove 'was shaken to the bones' when the Challenger space shuttle exploded, killing its seven crew members, including thirty-seven-year-old teacher Christa McAuliffe. 'I realized that I had been ingoring Owens too long' Mishlove writes in this remarkable story." -from the foreward by John E.Mack, M.D, author of Abduction and Passprt to the Cosmos. So begins Jeffrey Mishlove's The PK Man, the true and strange story of Ted Owens, whose claims of powerful psychokinetic abilities given to him by "Space Intelligences" were too bizarre and extreme for many to believe. When these claims were ignored or challenged, he purportedly used his powers to produce earthquakes, civil unrest, UFO sightings, strange weather events, and other powerful phenomena. Owens even threatened to down aircraft to garner attention. Was there any truth to Owen's abilities, or was he a fraud with a knack for picking the times and places of catastrophes? Jeffrey Mishlove, Ph,D, a respected parapsychologist and host of the popular public television program 'Thinking Allowed',analyzes correspondence, interviews, newspaper reports and testimonies of observers to probe the troubling nature and remarkable life of "the world's greatest psychic", as Owens claimed to be. Whether Owens was a prodigious liar and dangerous con-man, or a true but unbalanced master who used his incredible powers primarily for petty acts of revenge, many questions remain, and the implications for the rest of us are staggering. I found this book very curious. Not only have I never heard of Ted Owens, but i've never come across any references to his story; which I found especially strange because it mirrors (to some degree) Uri Geller. Both claimed, from an early age to be in contact with "space intelligences", which they claim, is main the source of their abilities; Only in the case of Ted Owens, his abilities seem to be far more powerful. Which would lead me to think that his story would justifiably be the one to recieve the most publicity. Or at the very least, i'd expect them to be brought up in similar conversations - but that's not the case at all. Whatever it is, there seems to be a lot of fear around this guy (even to mention his name), which to me adds plausabilty to the things he claimed to have taken responsility for. He apparently achieved great fame and notoriety in the 1970s for accurately predicting earthquakes, vehicle crashes, weather changes, sporting event outcomes, UFO appearances, power outages, and many other things. So why is his name never even brought up in anything relating to parapsycology? Maybe he is, but not in anything i've yet come across. Very strange. ![]() I'll add this review from Amazon: "This case study, told by psychologist Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, would be impossible to believe -- if it were not for the fact that the author has been known to me, and millions of others, for over a decade as the dignified and intelligent host of the national, public television series, Thinking Allowed. PK Man deals with phenomena that are mostly relegated to fictional accounts like Harry Potter, Star Trek or the X-Files. But, Mishlove's documentation is impeccable in convincing me that the events he describes actually did take place. And, as Mishlove concludes, the case deserves further study because phenomena of this type are rare. The book is about Ted Owens, who died in 1987 and who was studied by Mishlove for more than ten years. Owens claimed that he was in telepathic contact with hyperdimensional beings he called the "Space Intelligences." By virtue of this connection, Owens attempted to prove -- over and over again -- that he could control large-scale events such as hurricanes, climatic changes, UFO sightings, poltergeist phenomena, and power blackouts. Ted Owens called himself the "PK Man." PK stands for psychokinesis, the parapsychological term for mind over matter. Typically, Owens would produce his forecasts, in writing, to Mishlove and other scientists in advance of the actual events. Newspaper descriptions and eye-witness accounts would follow. The events forecast by Owens (who claimed he would actually be "causing" them -- with the help of the Space Intelligences) were quite unusual and highly unlikely. That any of them at all happened, in fact, is strange enough. But, Mishlove documents dozens of such events. So, the big questions are: was this mere coincidence? Did Owens actually cause the events as he claimed, or did he predict them? Either possibility is extremely interesting. The events that Mishlove describes are highly dramatic. I imagine some Hollywood studio will want to create a feature film about this book. The special effects would be incredible. And the story is very compelling. But, more important, the book raises significant issues about the nature and power of human consciousness itself. This is the part that is intriguing to me, as I imagine it will be to many readers of this book. Ever since the days of William James, America's first psychologisy who lived a century ago, researchers have been presenting their case for the existence of paranormal abilities. I think that Mishlove's book may well be the most forceful account available and deserves careful reading. One more thing. In addition to raising all sorts of compelling questions, the book is well written and is an excellent read" |

Every wall a door. by Anne Dooley.
" In this fascinating study of 'spirit' healing and psychic surgery, the author describes how an initial interest in spiritualism took her eventually to South America to witness the amazing psychic surgery performed the the Brazilian psychic surgeon Lourival de Freitas and from there went to Brazil to study his work more thoroughly. The highly-charged atmosphere of the healing sessions when this extraordinary man performs successful surgical operations on patients medically diagnosed as incurable, using only the most rudimentary equipment, is brilliantly captured and the author herself underwent such an operation. This intriguing record of a personal quest will appeal to sceptic and spiritualist alike, for the extraordinary phenomena baffles doctors as much as laymen." The book, originally released in 1973, seems to be quite the lost gem. Thumbs up from me.

The Curse of the Pharaohs. by Philipp Vandenberg
"'I don't believe in the curse of the Pharaohs' said Dr. Gamal Mehrez, director of the Egyptian museum in Cairo, in anterview with Philipp Vandenerg. Four weeks later, on the same day that Tutankhamen's golden mask was eing prepared for a trip to London, Mehrez died, aged fifty two, from circulatory collapse. He was only the latest in a series of more than thirty untimely deaths of researchers and archaeologists who have excavated in Egypt since 1900. Why did they die? Did the Egyptians delierately turn their Pharaohs' rock-bound toms into death-traps for the unwary? Were these scientists victims of a curse 4000 years old? Delving into the pyramids' fatal secrets, Philipp Vandenerg discovered three priciple causes for the deaths of those who dared to ignore the curse: fever with delusions, strokes accomponied by circulatory collapse, and sudden cancers that were quickly terminal. In this fast-paced, perceptive book, the author links those deaths to several remarkable but scientifically plausible explanations, while taking the reader on a fascinating excursion into ancient Egyptian history, customs, medicine and science. His conclusions show that modern man has seriously underestimated the scientific knowledge and skill of this ancient civilisation. The Curse of the Pharoahs is a startling and informative book, well-grounded in fact, that will appeal to everyone looking for a knowledgable investigation into previously unexplained phenomena." Very well written and researched. Good book. |

The Stargate Conspiracy. by Lynne Picknett and Clive Prince.
Recent exciting discoveries by independent researchers have dramatically challenged our understanding of ancient Egypt, raising profound questions about our past. STARGATE CONSPIRACY exposes the most insidious & dangerous plan of our times. It involves intelligence agencies, politicians, bestselling writers, scientists & industrialists. The authors believe that this conspiracy, centred upon the eternal mysteries of ancient Egypt, targets & threatens us all. Tracing the identity of the groups involved, Lynn Picknett & Clive Prince argue that at the heart of this strange plan is the belief that the ancient Egyptian gods were-and are-real extraterrestrials, about to return through the 'stargate' between our world & theirs. They suggest that the US-funded excavations on the Giza plateau - officially denied, but for which the authors produce documented evidence - now appear to be the result of directives allegedly received through communication with beings of higher intelligence, who are instructing the conspirators to lay the foundations for great global changes. Provocative & stimulating, STARGATE CONSPIRACY is a book of and for the new millennium. Wow! The conspiracy to wrap up all conspiracies. ![]() To me, it's not completely out of the bounds of possibilty; in fact, i'd say some of their observations are spot on; others, not so much. Still, it's a good read. |

Sai Baba: Man of Miracles. by Howard Murphy.
India has always nurtured true Yogis - those who have transceded the lower self, those in whom wonder-working powers or Siddhis have flourished. These powers, or some of them, have been brought into the research laboratories of the parapsychologists who call them extra-sensory perception and psycho-kinesis. Others call them miracles. Whatever the terminology, such powers and their practioners demand sensible attention. This account relates some of the achievements of one of the most impressive men of miracles to appear for centuries. Satya Sai Baba - his followers believe him to be a reincarnation of Sai Baba of Shirdi who died in 1918 -appears to have been born with phenomenal powers, which he used in childhood and has employed constantly and openly ever since. They include all the varieties of E.S.P and P.K known to psychic science and more besides. The author, a Westerner devoted to science and logic, spent many months with Satya Sai Baba; he claims to have founf that his "unscientific," "illogical" miracles were, in fact, genuine yogic siddhis. He found, too, that along with Christ-like miraculous powers went a Christ-like love, compassion and the God-knowledge that opens the door to a new vision of life." The Author's Note states that the book is intended for a wider audience that just devotees, so the idea was to be as objective as possible. In that respect, he did a wonderful job. All details of the "miracles" are looked at from all angles. Once the author saw for himself, that tone changes somewhat; but it's all the better for it. Great book. |
