Default Pedagogy Of The Oppressed

While listening this Corbett Report http://www.corbettreport.com/intervi...enis-rancourt/ I was stunned to hear this:

Denis Rancourt (http://activistteacher.blogspot.com) (from the 25th min.):
"....The designers of this school system knew what it is about – it’s about obedience. Its structure is the opposite to development and learning. I think the most full pedagogy is in Paulo Freire’s landmark book “Pedagogy Of The Oppressed.” Freire says that pedagogy needs to be based on authentic rebellion, i.e. the student should discover in herself the authentic rebellion. Otherwise they will fall apart / be set on the road of self destruction […] This rebellion is what Freire calls the *praxis of liberation.*

By *praxis* Freire [means this process]: You are acting to fight against your own oppression and that action causes the system to respond, then there is a backlash, and this feedback from the system informs you of the true nature of the system, which in turn causes you to analyse what’s going on, to reflect. Because you are subjected to the backlash, your reflection is particularly keen, you learn very quickly under those circumstances; and then you think up of what your next action is going to be, to protect yourself, and to push your liberation further.

This is called the praxis of liberation.
[ I immediately recognized what DR is talking about. ]
PF thinks that this is how true learning occurs. And [a very striking fact] he applied this to teach literacy, to slave peasants in Latin America in the 70s. (There were real slaves then in Latin America.)

The BIG barrier to learning is that the slave does not acknowledge that he is a slave.

They will say things like we need the superior, he protects us, he organises our work, we need that. In fact, this pedagogy involves exercises that catalyse an awareness about this condition to which the slaves are being subjected to, and then initiates this said praxis.

I think that’s the most powerful pedagogical theory that’s ever been developed.

I’ve been trying to put it in practice in my [university] classroom, in the First World, where society is structured in such a way that members of that society are not allowed to have an influence on that society. Possibility of such influence is 100% removed from us. That’s a strong kind of oppression for the First World middle class.

Paulo Freire thinks that the only way you can fight for justice is by reacting against your own oppression, fight against that hierarchy of dominance. [Eventually,] all of those individual struggles coalesce, they cross class barriers, as the social pyramid is brought down. And in my classroom experience, we find that when motivated to liberate yourself, you learn very quickly. ...."
Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy Of The Oppressed (in English) can be found online for free.

Stephen Covey explaining the charactor ethic and the personality ethic

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACukmJ_5HSo

Stephen R. Covey dies; author of ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ was 79

Stephen R. Covey, a former business professor whose 1989 leadership manifesto “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” sold more than 20 million copies on the way to becoming one of the most highly effective volumes in the history of self-help publishing, died July 16 at a hospital in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He was 79.

He died of complications from injuries he sustained in a bicycle accident three months ago. The death was announced by FranklinCovey, the multimillion-dollar business and leadership consulting firm he co-founded in his home state of Utah.

Stephen Covey’s ‘The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People’: A look at author Stephen Covey’s “habits” through the prism of seven successful leaders.

Dr. Covey was quick to admit that few new ideas could be found in his landmark book and the publishing and motivational-speaking empire he built around it. He was preceded in self-help business literature by Thomas J. Peters and Robert H. Waterman Jr., the McKinsey consultants who wrote “In Search of Excellence” (1982). Before them came Dale Carnegie, author of “How to Win Friends and Influence People” (1936).

Yet millions of readers turned to Dr. Covey’s books, whose titles included “First Things First,” “The Leader In Me” and “Everyday Greatness.” Fortune 500 executives lined up for top-dollar seminars where Dr. Covey was treated like a rock star, and President Bill Clinton once summoned him to Camp David, but not because Dr. Covey knew something they did not.

Dr. Covey had articulated a philosophy that — however platitudinous it seemed to detractors — transcended business and spoke to the centuries-old American values of self-improvement and self-reliance.

“This is not some kind of Big Bang theory,” Harvard Business School historian Nancy Koehn said in an interview. Dr. Covey’s achievement, she said, was a practical action plan for business leaders who no longer wished to be “the man in the gray suit” as they headed into the 21st century.

Instead, Koehn said, Dr. Covey challenged readers and listeners to think about their “character and integrity and a sense of one’s place not only relative to . . . one’s professional standing but one’s place in the cosmos.”

Dr. Covey disdained what he called the “flood of trendy philosophies” emanating from the modern workplace and instead offered seven seemingly timeless maxims. They had very little to do with business and everything to do with character.

And, he told the Daily Telegraph in 2004, “there was nothing esoteric or special about why I chose the number seven. . . . It just happened to turn out that way.”

The maxims are:

1. Be proactive.

2. Begin with the end in mind.

3. Put first things first.

4. Think win/win.

5. Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

6. Synergize.

7. Sharpen the saw — a Benjamin Franklin-esque injunction to seek constantly to improve oneself.

In 2004, as self-help books occupied ever more real estate in bookstores, he amended his 1989 book with “The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness.”

As Americans found their lives increasingly busy and cluttered, Dr. Covey emphasized the differences between tasks that are urgent but unimportant, important but not urgent, and every other permutation of the two.

Lightbulb Route 666

The road that leads to the centre of Bolton is the A666 which was nicknamed the “Devil’s Highway” due to its number and appalling accident rate. Bolton’s city council renamed the A666 “St. Peter’s Way”, lowered the speed limit, and made safety improvements to reduce the death toll which was three times higher than other motorways in the borough...

Shiprock, a sacred mountain to the Navajo people, is accessed via US 491...

The Navajo name for the peak, Tsé Bitʼaʼí, "rock with wings" or "winged rock", refers to the legend of the great bird that brought the Navajo from the north to their present lands...Permits are issued by the department to camp and hike in some areas, but not for sacred monuments such as Shiprock...The peak is mentioned in stories from the Enemy Side Ceremony and the Navajo Mountain Chant. It is associated with the Bead Chant and the Naayee'ee Ceremony...

U.S. Route 491 (US 491) is a north–south U.S. Highway serving the Four Corners region of the United States. One of the newest designations in the U.S. Highway System, it was created in 2003 as a renumbering of U.S. Route 666 (US 666).

In 1985, the US 66 designation was eliminated, leaving US 666 (and other routes) as "orphans".

"Write as you hear"...

Winter Hill is a hill on the border of the boroughs of Chorley, Blackburn with Darwen and Bolton, in North West England. It is located on Rivington Moor, Chorley and is 456 metres (1,496 ft) high. Part of the West Pennine Moors, it is a popular walking area, and has been the setting for mining activity, aeroplane disasters and murders...Its prominent position made it the ideal site for the Winter Hill TV Mast, transmitting to a large part of North West England. There are also a number of other tele-communication masts and towers around the summit and side of the hill for mobile phones, Professional Mobile Radio users and emergency services. Lancashire Constabulary was the first to use the site for one of their base stations in 1950; they had to build the road and it is said to have been built by policemen...

On 27 February 1958, a Silver City Bristol 170 Freighter (G-AICS) travelling from the Isle of Man to Manchester crashed into Winter Hill several hundred yards away from the transmitter. Thirty-five people died and seven were injured...UFOs have been reported on Winter Hill. In 1950, a witness described a "dark flat iron shaped object hovering close to the ground" and an encounter with a being that returned to a craft before disappearing. In 1999, in what became known as the "Murphy Incident", a farmer said he saw an object hovering over his cattle field. On investigation, the object moved away and the farmer reported the incident to the police. The farmer returned to the field and discovered the object had reappeared. He reported the incident to the Manchester Aerial Phenomena Investigation Team (MAPIT), who investigated it. While MAPIT was conducting its investigation, they alleged they were being followed by a man in a vehicle...Winter Hill has the highest television transmitting antenna in the United Kingdom and is higher than Green Hill which is the highest hill in Lancashire...

Exclamation Tel lie vision Trans mitter

The first tele-vised Christmas Broadcast or 'Queen's Speech', filmed at Sandringham House in Norfolk...

On December 17, 1949, the transmitter at Sutton Coldfield became the first television transmitter to broadcast outside London and the Home Counties, bringing BBC Television to viewers outside of the south-east of England for the first time.

MacDonald Hobley makes an in-vision announcement apologising for a technical hitch, then Syvlia Peters introduces viewers to the new transmitting station.

This film footage is from the Archive Collection held and administered by the Alexandra Palace Television Society.
