My understanding is the Jesus/image could have no long hair because he was not of the physical but the within.

Yes, but how long is 'long'? It doesn't necessarily mean short back and sides since hair past the ears on a man would still be considered 'short' compared to a woman's hair way below her waist.

The Romans and Greeks had short hair as one can see from the statues. Would Jews copy them or would they have their own hair styles?
