“Veggie” diet blamed for poor performance of China’s women volleyball team

Fearing tainted meat, China's women's volleyball team has stuck to a strict vegetarian diet for the last three weeks, which the team's coach is now blaming for his athletes' abysmal performance."

Fears of tainted meat with clentuterol makes the team overseas diet of vegetables, chicken and fish.
The above quote proves it was an absurd excuse as they were still getting plenty of protein.

Probably in fear of getting the sack.

If this were true, how are there so many top veggie and vegan athletes? Why do the England football team keep losing? Do they eat meat?

There aren't. 99.99% of world class athletes are omnivores. Whether you like it or not, world class athletes know that eating meat is the best way to replenish vitamins minerals fat and protein.

Now you will post the names of a few decent athletes who have been vegan for less than 20% of their life, or the names of athletes who accomplished their peak while omnivores and declined steadily once they became vegans (Carl Lewis).

To be fair Nick Diaz is vegan (not 100% I guess, but almost all the time) and he is dominant in MMA. His game is technique with superior cardio, not strength and power so I don't know how he would fare in a higher weight class where strength would be more of a factor.

He's a vegan who eats fish and eggs, in other words, an omnivore.

You think that three weeks on a vegetarian diet harmed their performance but 20% of someone's life on a veggie diet doesn't harm their performance. Three weeks is much less than 20% of someone's life - unless they are only 15 weeks old.

Carl Lewis said his best performances came after adopting a vegan diet. You can see that in his record of wins. This means that years on a vegan diet helped Lewis but three weeks on a veggie diet harmed those Chinese women.

There are many, many veggie sports champions and quite a few vegan ones.

You really need to try harder.

Losers.

In fairness though it is very easy to eat something that is prohibited by various doping rules and many Chinese athletes aren't sophisticated enough about other cultures to know exactly what they should avoid.

1) Ridiculous! There are an ever increasing number of top-flight athletes who are adopting a vegetarian or vegan diet.

Patrik Baboumian recently become the European powerlifting champion. The first vegan ever to hold the title. (Before becomg vegan, he was a vegetarian. None of his power and strength is down to meat eating.)

2) In Carl Lewis's own words that best year of his athletics career was the year he adopted a vegan diet. He was over 30 by that time - sprinting is a young man's game - but still became world champion.

The super athlete Ed Moses, world and Olympic champion, unbeaten in all track events for nearly 10 years was/is a lifelong vegetarian.

Carl Lewis, arguably the greatest Olympian ever did it on a vegan diet.

Technically, but one that almost always eats like a vegan from what I understand.

It looks like he won the raw powerlifting championship. While still impressive, it's not as prestigious as the IPF i.e. the competition won't be at the raw meet, it will be at the shirted, suited meet.

lol, that article isn't even about a vegan diet. It specifically says they had to give up "pork, beef and lamb" only. They could still eat chicken, fish, eggs, milk, etc. l2read

Guys, this is really just an indirect way for the coach to protest all the food scandals in his country over the last decade (specifically the one happening now) without looking like he's criticizing the government. They don't really have great free speech over there.

No surprise that the media isn't smart enough to pick up on that, either.
