The Illuminati most definitely did exist and this is pretty much agreed upon by most historians. Top level masons, etc.

Now days, we still have secret societies with members reaching the highest levels of governance and the corporate hierarchy. They leave symbolism planted all over the place, have cute handshakes and hand symbols, and still gather in secret.
