http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/ar...s-cabaret.html

It's not unusual for Daily Mail reporters to be bitchy - but she does actually have a couple of good points in this article....(the ones I highlighted)...

'When Russell Brand appeared before Keith Vaz’s Home Affairs Select Committee, which is reviewing drugs policy, it was hard to determine which of the  pair of them was the more  stupid, self-regarding or  publicity-seeking — the comedian or the MP.

Brand turned up late, looking as though he hadn’t washed for a month, in torn jeans and a tatty singlet, draped with more crucifixes than you’d find in the Vatican.

His contempt for the workings of Westminster could not have been expressed more eloquently.

Contempt: Russell Brand addresses the Home Affairs Committee
Sure enough, Brand proceeded to call MPs ‘mate’, crack smutty jokes and turn the whole affair into a farce. Thus what should have been an important debate turned into the Russell Brand show. Forgive me for not joining in the applause.

Select committees are the parliamentary forums at which a government’s policies are held to account. They are serious events to which experts in a particular field are invited to share their knowledge.
More...A stranger in the house! Russell Brand appears before Commons select committee wearing a torn vest, a cowboy hat and with tattoos on show and addressed MPs as 'mate' Russell Brand gave MPs a coo-ee and flashed his eyes. An inquiry into drugs. Yippee, what a hoot! RIGHMINDS: The pro-drugs lobby never sleeps. Can we trust wobbly Dave to silence fresh demands for legalisation?

But inviting Brand to share his insights on drug abuse was as absurd as it was offensive. Throughout his career, Brand has revelled in his history of drug and alcohol abuse. In his autobiography, My Booky Wook, he recounts his druggie years as if they were all a bit of a laugh.

An example? How about the time he picked up a hooker and took her home, satisfied his needs then retreated to the bathroom to smoke heroin. She hit him and he spat in her  face before she shoved him into the street naked. Hilarious! Tell us another! Like the 12 times you got  arrested.

Yet he seemed to lack even the smallest insight into the role celebrities like him have in promoting the culture that encourages so many impressionable young people to experiment with drugs in the first place.

Among all his posturing and wisecracks, there was no hint of responsibility, still less of shame or contrition.
But then what else would you expect from such an odious creep?

Perhaps the real fool here is Keith Vaz, who invited him to give evidence in the first place — a silly, self- aggrandising gesture from a man who craves the limelight almost more than his star guest.

Like David Cameron and Tony Blair before him, Vaz hoped that rubbing shoulders with a celebrity would make him seem ‘cool’ and in tune with younger voters. Instead, it belittled Parliament and insulted every parent in the country who has lost a child to the misery of addiction.'

So she criticises him for not adding substance to the meeting by criticising how he looks? Very substantial!

I think Parliament belittles itself every week all without the help of anyone else. This woman is just another divide and conquer, lullaby-singing robot.

What's the diffrence between bashing & debating, this is a forum after all. Brand is a dickhead not an icon

One of the things we have been programmed to do is to only listen to 'experts'. Well now they are programming us to listen to the celebrities - icons - idols in the same way. You do this by making them look like heroes speaking out against injustice to build your trust and worship of them.

It's a classic way of keeping us ineffective.

I agree that DM reporters are the most bitchy self obsessed bunch ever so it is the pot calling the kettle black but I do have to agree with some points she made - such as the many crucifixes he wore - he may as well have worn a vicars collar...

It is the same with that idiot Geldof. If he really cared, and i mean REALLY cared about Africa, he would be working there and have given all his money to help them.

But he wants YOU to give YOUR money to help them, while he lords it over us in his ivory castle and hob knobs it with his elite friends like Bono and the royal family.

Brand diasgreed with legalization of drugs

i believe they mention this at the start and probably why they got him on since of his celeb status

i think it totally backfired on them

they even had notes on how to deal with him if things didnt go there way, watch them scurry throu them

open your eyes and ears on this one and leave ur judgments at the door

No , but the guy who married Katie the little princess Perry, the bubblegum pop star, the same women who recently did a marines commercial does.
Brand is contributing to everything that's rotten with society, style over substance, he's movies are terrible, he has no artistic integrity, he just does anything for money. I'm fucking sick of these threads that people post up where because a celebrity said it it's infinitely more valid, at the end of the day he's probably right but who gives a fuck just because Russell Brand said it? BFD. It's either a celebrity or a rap song with half you people.
I'd start a thread if you did, no probs.

Maybe it's because he has experience with addiction and empathy with addicts? Unlike you, evidenced by the following;

Nothing like a sweeping generalism to put everyone in their place. Ooo, you're such a brave & clever dish.

soooo maybe not as quick witted as one may presumptiously presume
Unshockingly, you appear to be mixing up the ability to remember lines of a script with the ability to make off the cuff comments and ripostes.

Yes, God forbid you find a positive message within someone ending a destructive thread of their lives & becoming successful in their chosen field. Much better to sit at home unemployed & bravely state how all celebs are horrible people from behind a keyboard. That's MUCH more admirable, right?
