June 7, 2012 – IRELAND – A leading seismologist has said yesterday’s earthquake off the west coast was “unexpected” and poses “very interesting questions for geologists.” The earthquake, which registered a magnitude 4.0 on the Richter scale, was recorded as 60 km west of Belmullet, Co Mayo, at a depth of 3 km, at 8.58 am. It was the largest local seismic event ever recorded, according to Tom Blake of the Irish National Seismic Network (INSN) and the Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies. It was also the second-largest local earthquake on record in either Britain or Ireland, he said – the first being of 5.4 magnitude on July 19th, 1984, off the west coast of Wales and felt in Waterford and Wicklow. A 2.7 magnitude tremor was recorded in Lisdoonvarna, Co Clare, in May 2010.

NEW YORK (AP) — He was a horse with no name, a yearling in a sales ring at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., about 90 minutes from Churchill Downs, home of the most famous race in the universe, the Kentucky Derby.

An exercise rider working for a training center in Florida liked what he saw, bought the colt for the low price of $11,000 with the idea of preparing him for the races, then selling him as a 2-year-old for a nifty profit.

That unnamed baby became I'll Have Another, an extraordinary thoroughbred who with a win in Saturday's Belmont Stakes would become the 12th Triple Crown champion, and first in 34 years.

"I never saw this coming," says Dennis O'Neill, the brother of I'll Have Another's trainer, Doug, who picked out the horse at the Ocala Breeders' Sale for 2-year-olds in training in April 2011, and bought him for a modest $35,000 for owner J. Paul Reddam.

"Nowhere in our wildest dreams did we think we had a Derby winner," says Doug O'Neill. "I'm a very lucky guy to have such an amazing horse."

Super cell thunderstorm hits graduation

GALLOWAY, N.J. (CNN) - A high school graduation in New Jersey was interrupted when what looked to be a funnel cloud started forming nearby.

Matthew Blanchard took this video at Absegami High School, where the class of 2012 was celebrating their achievement on the football field.

This was reported to the National Weather Service a little less than an hour after the commencement exercises were scheduled.

CNN Meteorologist Sean Morris explains this was a super cell thunderstorm, which has a rotating updraft that creates large hail and can produce funnel clouds or tornadoes. He says this appeared to be a rotating wall cloud from the base of a super cell thunderstorm.

There were no reports of any tornadoes touching down.

Morris also says this is a perfect example of what not to do during a thunderstorm that is producing dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning in the area.

Luckily, none of these graduates or spectators were hit by lightning.
