Is nobody going to actually comment about Phreaky's Boyle quote? It's bang on the money. I remember Bill Hicks used to say things which were designed to shock and to provoke. It was as if he was looking at his audience, seeing all the ones who were deeply asleep and slapping them. Frankie has some of that quality about him, too. Some of the things he says are horrible but they are surrounded by loads of monologues about the nature of reality and the ridiculousness of accepted behaviour.

Well in 1999 he had two children, Suzi, 15, and Kydd, 12. His eldest son James had died 4 years previously.

It does say that Suzi had ambitions to become an actress so perhaps that's who you were thinking of?

Also wasn't Jimmy Boyle in prison until the early 80s? If so he was locked up long before and long after Frankie Boyle was born.

YAH, well i dont wanna say too much and risk getting my head blown off...So lets just say, i know what you are talking about because i read this myself, but sometime around 10 years ago it was common knowledge in my area that he had a son called Frank. And i must have been drunk when i watched a documentary about this Frank guy first appear on television talking about his father JB and first making a career for himslef. Maybe i was that drunk i mistook his name for frank but was actually Hank!!! Saying no more, i dont wanna start a family fued.....Was maybe a different JB

In a thread I posted promoting Edward Bernays book Propaganda I suggested that this book, by Frankie Boyle, was a bit of a joke as suggestive reading on a site like this.

I was accused of jumping to conclusions without having read the book.

I will post my response here as to not side track the other thread.

True, I have not read it. Before reading the comments regarding his stance on 9/11, I had already made my opinion up of this book. let me make it clear. The author was the primary reason for my opinion.

I took your words as sound advice and I looked a little bit further...

First alarm bell, its on WHSmiths best sellers list...
We all know what popular consensus is dont we....

Then I read the synopsis...

Quote:
Brace yourself, Frankie's back, and he's more outspoken and brilliantly inappropriate than ever. There are fears that this Christmas could see the start of a double-dip recession, or worse still a double-dip-with-misery-sprinkles and f**k-where's-my-job?-sauce. Why not chuckle into the howling void as taloned fingers reach up to consume you with Frankie Boyle's new book, Work! Consume! Die! In Work! Consume! Die! stand-up comedy's favourite pessimist, Frankie Boyle, offers his outrageous, laugh-out-loud, cynical rant on life as he knows it. He describes your reality as viewed through a bloodshot eye pressed against a shit-smeared telescope, focused on hell: * 'Charlie Sheen's life consists of going on huge drug benders with groups of porn stars. If he straightened himself out he could have a really mediocre career as a bit-part Hollywood actor. Playing the role of Martin Sheen's corpse. He's crazy like a fox! And also actually crazy. What a tragic waste, not being Charlie Sheen is. How majestic it will be for him to die, possibly quite soon, knowing that when they make a movie of his life, it will be a porno.' * 'The X Factor will be allowed to show product placements. That's powerful advertising. Last series I realised that looking at the judges alone had made me subconsciously buy a gnome, a scrag-end of mutton, a vacuous mannequin and a suspected gay.' * 'The Taliban are running out of bullets. Operation 'Get our troops to absorb them with their bodies' is finally paying off. The Taliban are finding it impossible to get hold of essential supplies -- at last we're fighting on equal terms. But let's not get complacent. Just because they're running out of bullets we mustn't assume our boys won't get shot. Remember, the US troops have still got plenty.' A no-holds-barred tour de force of comic writing, Work! Consume! Die! is Frankie Boyle at his brutal, taboo-busting best. This is nothing more or less than the clanging call to arms of a dying mechanical God.
Ill highlight some words that set off alarm bells....

double-dip recession
Charlie Sheen's life
X Factor
suspected gay
The Taliban - at last we're fighting on equal terms

Now, without reading this book I am 100% sure I never want to pick it up and I question the intellectual capabilities of anyone who thinks this makes a good read. ( i do not mean this offensively, please dont take my words as so, but i genuinely question the kind of person who would sit and read this when there are Sooooooo many good books by incredible authors)

He is no Bill Hicks.

I question the intellectual capacity of someone who thinks they can judge someone on the basis of a single book. Do take that offensively, I'm not sure it's possible to question someone's intellectual capacity in a non-offensive way.

Im not judging, im questioning. There is a difference.
Im not out to offend you. I was just being honest about how I feel about books like that. Trash made for consumption by TV junkies.

Oh pick the book up you moanin' old smeg head and enjoy it.

If he set out to offend he'd be a politician.

Can't help but get the feeling frankie laughs to himself everytime he offends someone, afterall he's only a comic.

You question someone's intelligence when you feel it is somehow lacking. You don't question the intelligence of someone who make a good point, do you?

The offence in inherent in the "I question your intelligence" statement.

Not a book made for a fan of comedy? I don't own a TV and haven't done since 1995. I do however watch lots of live comedy, until recently at least once a week. These days I'm down to a couple of times a month.

Also because I don't own a TV I read a lot of books, many of which are about stand up comedy and comedians.

It was my love of books that lead me to read your thread, which was recommending another title as being worth reading. I thought I replied to your thread in a polite manner and I read your response and though no more of it until I looked again and saw you'd edited it and added

So, get angry at a VAT rise but dont you dare consider 9/11 being an inside job.
Something I'd never suggested, so how can I not respond to that?

To dismiss it as trash is a bold statement about a book you've never read. I'm not going to hold it up as high art, but I would defend the book as one that is sometimes thought provoking and insightful.

Fair enough you don't like the author, I fully understand he can rub people up the wrong way, other people have said much the same in this thread and I've not commented further.

Anyway this is getting off track so back to Frankie Boyle!

I was reading FB's book a little earlier and there was a quote from David Icke's Children of the Matrix. That preceded a chapter about his disdain for the royal family. I've literally just started the chapter, but it's clear he's no monarchist.

Thank you, Truthseeker512. I now can't wait to read this book. I read My Shit Life So Far and spent the whole time choking with laughter. I wonder if you have to be good for santa to bring you a Frankie Boyle book.
