Ion Cioaba, who proclaimed himself King of All Gypsies Everywhere but wielded most of his meager influence as a political gadfly in his native Romania, died on Sunday at a hospital in Bucharest. He was 62 and reportedly died of a heart attack.

A native of Sibiu, in Transylvania, Mr. Cioaba (pronounced CHAH-ba) was by his own account elected a bulibasha, or Gypsy chief, at the age of 16. And as a wealthy coppersmith who served as president of the Union of Nomadic Metalworking Gypsies, he became a recognized Gypsy leader, one who agitated so much for Gypsy rights during the dictatorship of Nicolae Ceausescu that in 1986 he was jailed and tortured over what he insisted were fabricated charges of cheating the Government on a copper contract.

Mr. Cioaba's world opened up considerably after December 1989, when an uprising toppled the Ceausescu regime, and he served on the Provisional National Council, later becoming a political ally of President Ion Iliescu.

Eventually he began calling himself King of the Gypsies, but it was not until September 1992 that he had a solid gold, 13-pound crown placed on his head at a coronation that attracted 5,000 followers and the sometimes bemused attention of the Romanian press. The title had no basis in law, and so little basis in fact that a few months later a rival declared himself Emperor of All the Gypsies.

Even so, Mr. Cioaba, a portly man who usually shunned traditional Gypsy costumes in favor of a blue business suit, became an outspoken advocate for Gypsy rights, although rarely with much success. For example, he demanded that Germany stop the deportation of Gypsies to Romania and he sought reparations for the thousands of Gypsies who died in the Holocaust.

He did somewhat better in developing the trappings of power, generally arriving at meetings with Government officials in a motorcade of Cadillacs and Mercedes-Benzes.

While some Gypsy leaders dismissed him as a buffoon, Mr. Cioaba was often eloquent in representing the interests of a much-maligned and widely despised people, who traced their ancestry to northern India and got their name from a medieval misconception that they came from Egypt. Mr. Cioaba preferred the name Rom or Roma, a corruption of Dom, their original Indian caste.

Although President Iliescu granted him some favors over the years, Mr. Cioaba could make little headway in a country whose 23 million inhabitants include only 400,000 Gypsies (according to the census), or 2 million (by Mr. Cioaba's reckoning).

Indeed, by some measures the Gypsy population did better under the dictatorship because Mr. Ceausescu suppressed a separate Gypsy culture and forced Gypsy children to go to school, a requirement his successors have been lax in enforcing.

Mr. Cioaba, realizing he was a king without a kingdom, announced last year that he wanted to be a senator, but he and his son, Florin, who ran for separate seats, were both defeated, as was their patron, President Iliescu.

Just two weeks ago Mr. Cioaba dedicated a literacy and job-training center and a church he had had built in Sibiu, typically without first getting the approval of local authorities or the church. At the time of his death, Mr. Cioaba had traveled to Bucharest to seek the intercession of President Emil Constantinescu to prevent having the buildings razed.

In addition to his son, who is expected to succeed him, Mr. Cioaba is survived by his wife and five daughthers, including Luminitsa Mihai, who is a poet, and Lucia Radulescu, whose father-in-law is the self-proclaimed Emperor of All the Gypsies.

He also mentioned that the Ion Cioaba, the former self-proclaimed king of the Gypsies, was a member of the Knights of Malta. Not a surprise, because probably all the major catholic noble and royal houses in Europe are. Among them are Prince Hans Adam II of Liechtenstein, Otto von Habsburg (Bavaria; family intermarried with Thyssen-Bornemisza), King Juan Carlos, and at least several members of royal house of Belgium. It's interesting to note that many Knights of Malta can be found in the top tiers of the international intelligence world.

Elmer Bobst’s career began when at age 17, he left his father’s parsonage in Lititz, Pennsylvania, and moved to Philadelphia where he earned $3 a week clerking in a drugstore. He next turned to law and prepared himself for a qualifying legal examination within nine months. However, he elected to remain in the pharmaceutical business and joined Hoffman-LaRoche & Company. When he retired as its president in 1944, the company was one of the giants of the industry and Bobst was one of the highest paid executives in American business. He later came out of retirement to head Warner-Lambert Pharmaceutical Company. In a twenty year period, Bobst directed the growth of this company to a tenfold increase in volume. Some of the company’s better known products include Listerine and Dentyne chewing gum.

Chairman of Warner-Lambert Pharmaceutical, CEO of the New Jersey pharmaceutical giant Warner Chilcott, and considered an architect of the modern pharmaceutical industry. He has also been the president of La Roche, a pharmaceutical company he admitted was involved in illegally selling morphine to the underworld. In the seventies, Pope John Paul II Center for Prayer and Study for Peace was located on his estate. Directors of this center were Kurt Waldheim (Secretary General of the United Nations, ex-nazi war criminal, friend of Arnold Schwarzenegger), Cyrus Vance (Secretary of State, Pilgrim) and J. Peter Grace (Pilgrim, head of the Knights of Malta in the United States). Bobst himself was a member of the Knights of Malta. Bobst once wrote to his close friend Richard Nixon (who started the 'War on Cancer' in 1971), "If this beloved country of ours ever falls apart, the blame rightly should be attributed to the malicious action of Jews." Bobst's granddaughters and great-granddaughters have accused him of sexually abusing them. All this didn't prevent that a huge library would be named after him.

In 1963 he was appointed Privy Chamberlain of Sword and Cape, one of the highest of all Vatican titles, one also held by his brother Filippo.[11]

With all of this enormous power, and despite his leading position in the Catholic Church, Spada sponsored the rise of Michele Sindona as one of the Vatican's "men of confidence." His choice was most peculiar, not only because Sindona had been a Fascist during the war, but because during that time he had made connections (through American OSS-connected mobster Vito Genovese) to the Inzerillo and Gambino crime families, for whom he laundered heroin money.

LEAD: Martin F. Shea, a senior vice president of the Morgan Guaranty Trust Company of New York, died of a heart attack Tuesday at his home in Manhattan. He was 65 years old.

Mr. Shea was vice chairman of the St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center, secretary of the Catholic Youth Organization of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, a former chairman of the Cardinal's Committee for Education and a former board member of the College of Mount St. Vincent. He joined Morgan Guaranty in 1946. Mr. Shea was born in Manhattan. He graduated from Dartmouth College and the Columbia University Law School and earned a Master of Law at the New York University Law School.

His wife, Julia, survives.

Otto, Crown Prince of Austria or Otto von Habsburg (born 20 November 1912 as Archduke Franz Joseph Otto Robert Maria Anton Karl Max Heinrich Sixtus Xaver Felix Renatus Ludwig Gaetan Pius Ignatius of Austria, later of Austria-Este) has been the head of the Habsburg family since 1922 and is the eldest son of Charles, the last Emperor of Austria and last King of Hungary, and his wife, Zita of Bourbon-Parma. He is a former member of the European Parliament for The Christian Social Union of Bavaria (CSU) party and honorary president of the International Paneuropean Union.

Otto lives in Bavaria in Germany, and is a citizen of Germany, Austria, Croatia and Hungary. Although his official name in Germany is Otto von Habsburg, he is referred to as Otto Habsburg-Lothringen by Austrian authorities, since the use of noble titles and prepositions like "von" is forbidden by the Austrian constitution. He is also often known as Archduke Otto of Austria, Crown Prince Otto of Austria, and in Hungary simply as Habsburg Ottó.

Years in exile

Otto's family spent the subsequent years in Switzerland and on the Portuguese island of Madeira, where Karl died prematurely in 1922, leaving the 10-year-old Otto pretender to the throne. Meanwhile, the Austrian parliament had officially expelled the Habsburg dynasty and confiscated all the official property (Habsburgergesetz of 3 April 1919).

In 1935 Otto graduated from the Catholic University of Leuven, having studied social and political sciences.

Opposing the Nazi government

Otto spent most of the war years in Washington, D.C. (1940 – 1944), after escaping from Belgium to Paris with his mother, Empress Zita, and other family members. His cousins Max, Duke of Hohenberg, and Prince Ernst of Hohenberg were arrested in Vienna by the Gestapo and sent to a concentration camp until the end of the war. Many other Habsburgs suffered the same fate, the main reason for leaving friendly Belgium and escaping to France. When Paris was in danger, the family left the French capital and moved to Portugal with a visa issued by Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the Portuguese consul in Bordeaux. A fervent Austrian patriot, Otto opposed the Nazi Anschluss in Austria in 1938 and, sentenced to death by Hitler, chose to leave Europe altogether (ironically, the code name for the operation carried out by the German army in the Anschluss was 'Otto'). After the war, Otto lived for some years in both France and Spain.

Otto is alleged to have struck fellow MEP Ian Paisley. When Pope John Paul II gave a speech to the European Parliament in 1988, Paisley shouted at the Pope, "I renounce you as the Antichrist!" and held up a poster reading "Pope John Paul II Antichrist", whereupon he was excluded from the session and expelled from the room by other MEPs.[5][6]

The amount of ties to the Vatican within these institutions, and in particular to Opus Dei and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, is absolutely staggering. HON. WILLIAM H. G. FITZGERALD, a former US Ambassador to Ireland and philanthropist, died in Washington, DC, on January 5, 2005. He was 96.

William Henry Gerald FitzGerald was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1931. After his Navy tour of duty concluded, he attended Harvard University’s law school. He served in the Navy during World War II.

In 1958, President Eisenhower appointed Mr. FitzGerald deputy director for management at the International Cooperation Administration (later AID). President George H. W. Bush appointed him US Ambassador to Ireland in 1992; he served until 1993.

Ambassador FitzGerald was a senior partner in the investment firm of Hornblower, Weeks, Hemphill, and Noyes, and vice chairman of Financial General Bankshares, a holding company. He was involved in housing projects in the Washington area from the 1940’s, including as chairman of the private North American Housing Corporation.

In 1987, Ambassador FitzGerald endowed a scholarship program for inner-city children in the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington. He was the senior member of the Order of Malta. He established a mentoring program for underprivileged children at the Washington Tennis Foundation. He set up a program under which Naval Academy midshipmen pursue postgraduate studies at Oxford University. He was vice chairman of the USG-chartered African Development Foundation and a trustee of several Washington institutions. He continued to play tennis and squash until recent years.

In addition to his wife of 63 years, Annelise Petschek FitzGerald of their home in Washington, Ambassador FitzGerald leaves two children and five grandchildren.

The origins of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta in the United States go back to 1927 with the founding of the American Association in New York. By 1953 the membership had become so diverse that the Sovereign Council established the Western Association, based in San Francisco.

For twenty years the Order grew throughout the country and in 1973, with the support of Cardinal William Baum, William H.G. FitzGerald requested that the Sovereign Council approve a third national association in the United States. On November 15, 1974, the Sovereign Council approved by formal decree the formation of the Southern Association of the Order of Malta with nine original members. Seven days later the Sovereign Council approved the transfer of eleven more Knights to the Southern Association. In 1985, the Sovereign Council approved the change of the name to the "Federal" Association to reflect more accurately the national composition of the organization.

Edward Bennett Williams (May 31, 1920 – August 13, 1988) was a Washington, D.C. trial attorney who founded the law firm of Williams & Connolly and owned several professional sports teams.

He represented many high profile clients including Frank Sinatra, financier Robert Vesco, Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner, spy Igor Melekh, Jimmy Hoffa, organized crime figure Frank Costello, U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy, Michael Milken, the Washington Post newspaper and the Reverend Sun Myung Moon.

Williams, who was a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross and Georgetown University Law Center, successfully defended – among others – Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Jimmy Hoffa, John Connally and as one his last clients Michael Milken.

Two of Williams' closest friends were the Washington Post's Art Buchwald and Ben Bradlee. His debating team partner at Holy Cross was Robert Maheu, Howard Hughes's right hand man for many years.

In 1983 his two professional teams, the Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Redskins, both won their respective championships. He owned the Orioles from 1980 to 1988. When he bought the Orioles many feared he would move the team to Washington D.C., and these fears increased with the departure of the Colts. However, Williams never moved the team, and under his ownership, the team signed a new long term lease with Baltimore that would pay for a new stadium, which would become Oriole Park at Camden Yards. He would not live to see the new ball park.

Richard St. John Harris - Grammy Award-winning Irish Actor of International Acclaim

Richard St. John Harris (1 October 1930 – 25 October 2002) was an Academy Award-nominated and Grammy Award-winning Irish actor, singer and songwriter. He appeared on stage and in many films, and is perhaps best known for his roles as King Arthur in Camelot (1967), as Oliver Cromwell in Cromwell (1970) and for his portrayal of Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), his last film. He also played a British aristocrat and prisoner in A Man Called Horse (1970).

Early life and career

Harris, the fifth of eight children, was born in Limerick City, Ireland, the son of Ivan and Mildred (née Harty) Harris, who owned a flour mill.[1][2] He was schooled by the Jesuits at Crescent College. A talented rugby player, he was on several Munster Junior and Senior Cup teams for Crescent, and played for the well-respected Garryowen Football Club. He might have become a provincial or international-standard rugby player, but his athletic career was cut short when he contracted tuberculosis in his teens. He remained an ardent fan of Munster provincial rugby team until his death, attending many matches, and there are numerous stories of japes at rugby matches with fellow actors and rugby fans Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton.

After recovering from the disease he moved to London, wanting to become a director. He could not find any suitable courses and enrolled in the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) to learn acting. While still a student, Harris rented the tiny "off-West End" Irving Theatre, and directed his own production of the Clifford Odets play Winter Journey (The Country Girl). The show was a critical success, but a financial failure, and Harris lost all his savings on the venture.

As a result, he ended up temporarily homeless, sleeping in a coal cellar for six weeks. After completing his studies at the Academy, Harris joined Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop. He began getting roles in West End theatre productions, starting with The Quare Fellow in 1956, a transfer from the Theatre Workshop.

Personal life and death

In 1957, he married Elizabeth Rees-Williams, daughter of David Rees-Williams. Their three children are actor Jared Harris, actor Jamie Harris (born as Tudor St. John Harris, but known as Jamie since childhood), and director Damian Harris (who has a son named Marlowe, born 2002, with Australian actress Peta Wilson). Harris and Rees-Willams were divorced in 1969, and Elizabeth married another actor, Rex Harrison.

Harris' second marriage was to American actress Ann Turkel, who was 16 years his junior; that marriage also ended in divorce. He was a member of the Knights of Malta, despite his divorces, and was also knighted by Denmark in 1985. He was reportedly good friends with Peter O'Toole.[5] His family reportedly hoped O'Toole would replace Harris as Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.[5]

Harris often told stories about his haunted English Mansion, The Tower House, which was sold later to Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin fame. According to Harris, the tower was haunted by an eight-year-old boy who had been buried in the tower. The boy often kept Harris awake at night until he one day built a nursery for the boy to play in, which calmed the disturbances to some extent.[6]

Harris died of Hodgkin's disease on October 25, 2002, aged 72, two and a half weeks before the U.S. premiere of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. He was replaced as Dumbledore by fellow Irish-born actor Michael Gambon.

Whenever he was in London, Harris lived at the Savoy Hotel. According to hotel archivist Susan Scott, when he was being taken from the hotel on a stretcher, shortly before his death, he warned diners, 'It was the food!' [7]

William Frank "Bill" Buckley, Jr. (born November 24, 1925) is an American author and conservative commentator. He founded the political magazine National Review in 1955, hosted the television show Firing Line from 1966 until 1999, and is a nationally syndicated newspaper columnist. His writing style is famed for its eloquence, wit, and use of uncommon words.[1] Over the course of his career, Buckley's views have changed on some issues, such as drug legalization, which he now favors.[2] In his December 1, 2007 column, Buckley claimed to favor banning tobacco.

Buckley is the author of a series of novels featuring the character of CIA agent Blackford Oakes, along with dozens of other books on writing, speaking, history, politics, and sailing. Buckley refers to himself "on and off" as either libertarian or conservative.[3][4] He is based in New York City and Stamford, Connecticut. Buckley often signs his name as "WFB."

Childhood

Buckley was born in New York City to lawyer and oil baron William Frank Buckley, Sr., of Irish Catholic descent, and Aloise Steiner, a Southerner of Swiss-German descent. The sixth of ten children, young Buckley moved with his family to Sharon, Connecticut before beginning his first formal schooling in Paris, where he attended first grade. By age seven, he received his first formal training in English at a day school in London, (his first and second languages were Spanish and French[citation needed]). As a boy, Buckley developed a love for music, sailing, horses, hunting, skiing, and story telling. All of these interests would reflect in his later writings. Just before World War II, at age 13, he attended high school at St John's Beaumont in England. During the war, his family took in the future British historian, Alistair Horne, as a war evacuee. Buckley and Horne have remained life-long friends. Buckley and Horne both attended Millbrook School, in Millbrook, New York, and graduated as members of the Class of 1943. At Millbrook, Buckley founded and edited the school's yearbook, The Tamarack, his first experience in publishing.

Education, military service and the CIA

Buckley attended the National Autonomous University of Mexico (or UNAM) in 1943 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the US Army the following year. In his book, Miles Gone By, he briefly recounts being a member of Franklin Roosevelt's honor guard when the president died. With the end of World War II in 1945, he enrolled in Yale University, where he became a member of the secret Skull and Bones society[citation needed], and was an active member of the Conservative Party and of the Yale Political Union, and served as Chairman of the Yale Daily News.

Buckley graduated from Yale in 1950. That same year, he married Patricia Alden Austin Taylor, (July 1, 1926 - April 15, 2007), the daughter of industrialist Austin C. Taylor. He met Pat, a Protestant from Vancouver, British Columbia, while she was a student at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. Buckley was her roommate's brother. Their son is the author Christopher Buckley. Pat Buckley was a prominent charity fundraiser for such organizations as the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at New York University Medical Center and the Hospital for Special Surgery. She also raised money for Vietnam War veterans and AIDS patients.

In 1951, Buckley was recruited into the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), yet served for less than a year. Little has been published regarding Buckley's work with the CIA, but in a 2001 letter to author W. Thomas Smith, Jr., Buckley wrote, “I did training in Washington as a secret agent and was sent to Mexico City. There I served under the direct supervision of Howard Hunt, about whom of course a great deal is known.”

In a November 1, 2005, editorial for the National Review, he recounted that:

When in 1951 I was inducted into the CIA as a deep cover agent, the procedures for disguising my affiliation and my work were unsmilingly comprehensive. It was three months before I was formally permitted to inform my wife what the real reason was for going to Mexico City to live. If, a year later, I had been apprehended, dosed with sodium pentothal, and forced to give out the names of everyone I knew in the CIA, I could have come up with exactly one name, that of my immediate boss (E. Howard Hunt, as it happened). In the passage of time one can indulge in idle talk on spook life. In 1980 I found myself seated next to the former president of Mexico at a ski-area restaurant. What, he asked amiably, had I done when I lived in Mexico? "I tried to undermine your regime, Mr. President." He thought this amusing, and that is all that it was, under the aspect of the heavens.

William Casey was the lawyer who incorporated the publication in 1955. One of the most influential men in the back corridors of Republican power, Buckley served as a political consultant to the National Security Council during the Reagan administration. His brother James, a former New York senator, was undersecretary of state for security affairs and president of Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty, both with a history of employing Nazi collaborators. Under Buckley, they were accused of broadcasting anti-Semitic material and of providing positive descriptions of a Nazi unit involved in the murder of thousands of Jews in the western Ukraine.

James Lane Buckley (born March 9, 1923 in New York City) was a United States Senator from the state of New York as a member of the Conservative Party of New York. Buckley served from January 3, 1971 to January 3, 1977. Formerly, he was vice president and director of the Catawba Corporation from 1953 to 1970, and afterwards served as Undersecretary of State for Security Assistance 1981–1982, President of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Inc. 1982–1985, and as a federal judge 1985–2000.

He was also the lead petitioner in a landmark Supreme Court case, Buckley v. Valeo, in which he successfully challenged the constitutionality of a law limiting campaign spending in Congressional races.

In 1970 he was elected to the U.S. Senate as a member of the Conservative Party of New York, winning 38.7% of the vote in a three-way race, and served from 1971 until 1977. To date he has been the only member of his party, and the last member of a third party, elected to the U.S. Senate.[1]

Education and early career

A 1943 graduate of Yale University, where he was a member of Skull & Bones[2][3][4], Buckley enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 and was discharged with the rank of lieutenant in 1946. After receiving his law degree from Yale Law School, he was admitted to the Connecticut bar in 1950 and practiced law until 1953, when he joined Catawba as vice president and director.

Radio Liberty and Radio Free Europe were fronts for the intelligence network that had been established by Reinhard Gehlen, Hitler's former espionage officer against Russia. Knight of Malta, James Buckley, was head of U.S. propaganda against Eastern Europe at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty during the Reagan Administration. Under the supervision of Grace and other prominent figures, Radio Liberty functioned as a front for ex-Nazis:

"In 1950, the American Committee for Liberation from Bolshevism was created. The trustees included J. Peter Grace, Charles Edison, William Henry Chamberlain, H.J. Heinz II, Isaac Don Levine, and Eugene Lyons. There are many other knights with CIA connections. Clare Boothe Luce, for example, the grande dame of American diplomacy, served as a U.S. ambassador to Italy in the 1950s and is now a member of the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board, which oversees covert opera-tions. William Buckley, Jr., a former CIA operative and the editor of the National Review, is a member, as is his brother James, a former senator from New York and now undersecretary of state for security assistance.

The focal point of the broadcast is the Sovereign Military Order of Malta or SMOM, popularly known as the Knights of Malta. An order of Vatican knights dating to the crusades, the SMOM consists of influential political, military, business and civic leaders who are viewed by the Vatican as key figures who either have helped, or who might someday be of great assistance in furthering the policies of the Catholic faith. Recorded in late 1982, the program highlights the significant role of the SMOM in the Reagan administrations. Figures like former CIA director William Casey, James Buckley, Alexander Haig and other knights collaborated with other conservative Catholics in the Reagan administrations. Together, they comprised a very effective engine of political reaction that helped drive the Soviet Union out of existence. Another key American knight was J. Peter Grace, who played a leading role in bringing I.G. Farben researcher (and Nazi war criminal) Otto Ambros to the United States.
