Default So What has religion done for mankind then?

For thousands of years people continue to believe in religions and let it control there life sometimes to the point of pure insanity, so where has religion got us then?

What has it actually achieved?

Has it made the world a better place?

Has it just caused more wars than there would have been had it not existed?

WHAT IS THE POINT OF RELIGION? (apart from it stops you nuts from facing reality)

I am really interested and at the same time stunned at how people follow religion.

I also think it is just pure selfishness and elitist!

Religious people think some how they are better thjatn you if you dont follow there chosen brain washing program, how very sad this world can be.

IMO, religion is used as a perfect controlling mechanism.
rest assured, majority of the people WANTS control, do not want responsibility. They rather pay a middleman (priest/church/government/police/you name it) than do something themselves.
Sad, but true.
And, elite delivers what people (are conditioned to) want/desire.

I'm a great fan of Christians who are against the microchip.

All religions are B.S. Made by man to control man. You can't do this, you've got to do that. And what has it achived? People hating other people. No more than goverments do really.

A few bad apples spoils the bunch? What about money? Plenty people war and kill for cash, and steal and lie. What about science. What happens when people begin thinking fanatically about science and butchering bodies for advancements without a shred of remorse?

It isn't religion, it is PEOPLE.

After all how many subscribe to religion through fear or promise of rewards? Are these then truly religious people or sheep that missed the point?

Being doukhabor I understand the good and evil of religion and the impact it had on my people. Yes there are bad religions that are for the express purpose of mind control, but not all are. There is a lot of truth in religion, sadly there is much deciet as well by those who wish to pervert the teachings and use it for a control mechanism.

With inflation, that is my 3 and half cents.

Hi Procyon, *hands you 1 cent change for your 3 cents worth* lol
While reading this thread for some reason I keep getting this saying in my head
Forgive them for they know not what they do!
Religion/s in essence were created to divide and conquer the masses through a fear of death and a promise of paradise in the afterlife.
You say what about money, well pro who has the money? the common people or the elite few who are in control of money in the first place? The pope is sure not short of a penny
Government laws are based on religion, so really even the wars over money still have a religious connection.

Actually I have a similar Question: "Where have New age Conspiracy theorists got you".
Except for feathering their own nests, not very far it would seem although they do like to give that impending depressing sense of Doomsday and that exciting SCI FI thought that our bosses and middle classs neighbours just might be reptiles in disguise. All you need to start your days on high ay!.

Truthfully, nothing at all.

For the past year, I've debated with a lotta Christians and non-Christians. Well we obviously know what the Christians think about their religions. But even the non-Christians are neutral towards the entire thing and they say they don't mind because Christianity teaches good morals. Hahaha yeah right. Apart from the 10 commandments like, do not steal, do not kill, do not rape your neighbour's wife, whatever...they teach a lot of bad things amongst the good. There is this Christian Union meeting at my university and I attend their talks once in a while. They are all about teaching methods of submission and how humans are inferior beings and we shouldn't try to achieve things because we are nothing compared to god anyway. It's all brainwashing nonsense.

This is on a par with what my sister has said to me when we have "discussed" religion at times. Its really quite scary to see someone who believes that, and who has so little regard for humans.

Fairly standard back story in my family, dad who grew up in a rural area with a cold and emotionless father, and taught not to question him and always project an image of "everything is fine" to the outside world. A mother with massive self esteem issues, religious affiliations and ended up marrying my dad I assume out of a fear of being lonely or whatever. Ceratinly there was no love there or if there was its long gone.

As for me and my siblings, brought up in a repressive, religious, strict home, usual bullying at school for me, no kind of "normal" life outside of church activities growing up. A sister who always played my parents game and won them and their backing over me from a very early age, which continues even now. Eventually I woke up (a term I've used with them often while arguing over all of this), and had to get away.

To cut a long story short, I am finally away, on my own in a new country, although still close to where I was brought up. Here I have no stress, no worries, and no emotional hurt or pain. Trying to discuss how I feel, or what they are doing thats hurtful or wrong only ends up with 3 of them against me and of course, they are all so ignorant that my brain turns to mush trying to use logic and rationale to counter what they say.

I only care about my younger brother now, 9 years younger than me (almost to the day). Hes the opposite of me in many ways, but I have over the years been the strong male figure he has lacked. I only hope that one day he too gets away from my family and their poisionous attitudes.

Religion or rather a perverted view of it has destroyed my "family", so much so that I wouldnt call us a family. Whilst they may have brought me up and spent their money educating me, that still doesnt mean that they are above criticism and reproach. It caused so much negative thoughts my entire life, as well as damage to my self esteem and world view.

I am so happy I am free from that now, and am attempting to have a normal life. I just hope its not too late to start (I'm 26), and have missed out on so much in my formative years.

Apologies for the rant, but I needed to vent. Each time I read a Religion topic or hear about things in the news concerning it I get so angry, as I can see the folly and lies in it all. Some day it is my wish that we all collectively wake up and drop these silly notions and focus our energies on positive common goals for mankind.
