If everyone in San Francisco's Chinatown jumped up and down at the same time, would California fall into the sea?

I certainly hope you're wrong. I grew up in the Bay Area right near the fault line and a lot of my family and friends live there. It's not like we haven't been expecting it for a while though.

So, do most Californians just think, "Nah, it's not going to happen in MY lifetime! And besides, I have no time to worry, I've got work in the morning."

BTW I ask because my dad always said that earthquakes could be predicted accurately with enough resources - I'm assuming you're not using expensive tech

Pretty much. A lot of people there are used to experiencing them too. The thing about tectonic plates is that they could shift at anytime. It could go tomorrow or it could go in 100 years and nobody really knows if that shift will be small or HUGE. The Earth doesn't run by our 24 hour system. On a positive note, if it does happen, California has a much better infrastructure to deal with earthquakes than the parts of Japan that were hit.

I experienced a "small" 5.4 earthquake while I was on a wooden deck 40ft above the ground and it folded in half, then went back to normal. One of the scariest moments of my life. Our marble kitchen island has a shock wave go through it and it's still intact too.

How can you possibly predict something like this? I think you just got "lucky" (for lack of a better word) on the Japan ones. You do realize that small earthquakes happen extremely frequently along the Ring of Fire in the Pacific Ocean? THere's been more and bigger earthquakes in Alaska, Japan, and the Fiji Islands in the last 7 days than California.

Interactive map of earthquakes in the past 7 days:

Earthquakes in the past 8-30 days (same source):

Your threads in the earthquake sticky are usually very good Cathar! Keep it up and don't let the trolls shake your resolve.

Never underestimate your intuition!

Are you trying to say i'm trolling? I'm the only one that questioned his prediction of earthquakes off of intuition.

In Ancient Rome March was the first month and August was the 6th month....

August 6,2011 falls on a Saturday...the 6th day of the week.....3 days from now {on Saturday** will mark the 66th anniversary of the Atomic Bomb drop on Hiroshima...

Lots of sixes there ...might be too tempting for the powers that be to pass up...

I'm not predicting a 6.6 mag off Japan or anywhere else.....but if there is one I predict

it will be shallow depth quake @ around 6AM or 6 PM.....

Or maybe Mt.Etna will explode and cover Naples just like Pompeii in Ancient Rome....
