John Mayall - Broken Wing

Guitar legend John Mayall was born 29th of November 1933 in Macclesfield, Manchester, and grew up during World War II listening to his guitarist father’s jazz collection. Strongly influenced by such greats as Leadbelly, Albert Ammons, Pinetop Smith, and Eddie Lang, from the age of 13 he taught himself to play and develop his own style with the aid of a neighbour's piano, borrowed guitars, and secondhand harmonicas.

John Mayall's first brush with fame, however, was not for his music. As a teenager, he received newspaper attention when he moved out of the house and into his backyard treehouse. Since, upon returning from Korea with the British Army, he brought his first wife, Pamela, to live with him there. He later wrote the track, "Home In A Tree" which was included on his brilliant 1971 "Memories" album which told the story of his Manchester childhood.

From 1956 until 1962, John was performing his music on a part-time basis fronting The Powerhouse Four and, later on, The Blues Syndicate. It was then that Alexis Korner heralded what was to become known as The British Blues Boom of the late 1960's. Alexis was quick to encourage 30 year-old John and his Mancunian drummer, Hughie Flint, to move down to London where he formed John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, recording the debut "John Mayall Plays John Mayall" album.

eric clapton & the bluesbreakers

After a couple of years and a constant turnover of musicians, John met Eric Clapton, who had quit the Yardbirds in favour of playing the blues. Together they recorded the first hit album in 1966, simply called "Bluesbreakers" (UK No.6) before Clapton along with Jack Bruce left the band to form Cream.

In 1966, guitarist Peter Green joined the band whilst Hughie Flint returned to Manchester to form McGuinness Flint. The next album, "A Hard Road", scored Top 10 success, and drummer, Mick Fleetwood, joined the band temporarily before leaving with Green to form Fleetwood Mac. (Mick Taylor was recruited to replace Peter Green).

Nice...'Future Sound of London' because where Manchester leads London follows? Just guessing.

They were originally Humanoid, who released a big acid house hit called Stakker Humanoid:

Not sure about the reasons behind the FSOL name. There was a bit of a swagger about the "Madchester" scene at the time, so it might well have been as you suggested but I'm not 100% sure.

This one depends on who you believe. Remember that it is said to have been the best-selling 12" single of all time, so their losses would be huge if that were the case!

It's possible that they may have made a loss on the original die-cut sleeve though. Those sold out fairly quickly and the later editions used a cheaper sleeve, which presumably did make a profit.

Either way, New Order spent most of their earnings from Blue Monday on the Hacienda - which of course was a money pit! Remember that at the height of the club's fame, most of the clientèle were off their tits on E, so the bars didn't make much money, whereas the drug dealers were coining it in.

depends on who you believe......

they knew all about the drug scene when they opened that place , they had just spent months in NYC chomping down the disco biscuits, most probably they had their own dealers in place before the club opened. 'The factory club would have been a great way to make money disappear from the taxman

I would guess you're right to a point on the tax thing...though it was a bit like 'Apple' with the Beatles...ie musicians doing business stuff doesn't generally work out, though there are exceptions like Mick Jagger. Actually you could argue he's a businessman doing a bit of music on the side..

They "opened that place" in 1982 and struggled to fill it most of the time until house music became big in Manchester in 1986. It was a loss-making venture until 1987. The widespread use of E there came with the rise of acid house in 1988.

Most people, myself included, did think Tony Wilson was rolling in it at the time, since the Hacienda was always packed out from the late 80s to the early 90s and he used to swan around in Armani suits (although that was probably because he was also a presenter for Granada TV).

But he died a few years ago because he couldn't afford the drugs that could have prolonged his life, so perhaps not.

Default Halleluja!

Happy Mondays-Halleluja

Hallelujah, hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah
We're here to pull ya
Back in to do it all the same

Hallelujah, hallelujah
Not sent to save ya
Just here to spank ya
Play some games

Do it long, long, doin' it long
Do fine, fine, doin' it fine
Go in, out, goin' in, not out

Hallelujah, hallelujah
Not here to praise ya
Just here to raise ya
Fill you full of maze

Hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah
We're Mr. Bitter
We'll take a bit of this and that

Hallelujah, hallelujah
When Shaun William Ryder
Will lie down beside ya
Fill you full of junk

Just here to spank ya play some games

Do it long, long, doin' it long
Do fine, fine, doin' it fine
Go in, out, goin' in, not out

Hallelujah, hallelujah
Not here to praise ya
Just here to raise ya
Fill you full of maze

Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah

Well GELD-HOF certainly made a few quid as a 'businessman' with his TV channels in Eastern europe, Network 7 on C4, 'the big breakfast' , all his 'charity' scams

but he was NEVER a musician

You confuse the musicians DOING business stuff with the ones who invest and use thier contacts and pay others to run the businesses, those guys do very well, lets face it, anyone who owns even one house by the age of 40 has done very well, they have 'won' and got 'out' of the game. They still need to eat, but if the own a house , they have done better than most in this fixed tax-con society , they are in a sense 'free'

If some band 'loses' £5 million and they still have a house to live in , they have still not done badly.

the example of the beetles and 'apple' is a bit different as they were establishment controlled pawns , i don't believe any of the myths that are spun about the eternally shit beetles

huge corporations do "stuff that doesn't generally work out" all the time, they are part of tax avoidance scams. I'm not so naive that I will watch one BBC 'documentary' about the factory club and believe every word 'hook , line and sinker'

Yeah let's not get too grumpy and political...'there's a time and a place for everythin', to quote the Stone Roses so let's just enjoy the music here, eh?

Stone Roses-Elephant Stone

My notion of the lyrics to this have been wrong for about 20 years by the way, check em out..

Burst into heaven
Kissing the cotton clouds
Arctic sheets and fields of wheat
I can't stop coming down

Your shrunken head
Looking down on me above
Send me home like an elephant stone
To smash my dream of love

Dream until the sun goes down
And night turns into day
Rooms are empty, I've got plenty
We're movin' right away

Seems like there's a hole in my dreams
In my dreams, in my dreams

Down through the heavens
Choke on the cotton clouds
Arctic sheets and fields of wheat
I can't stop coming down

Your shrunken head
Looking down on me above
Send me home like an elephant stone
To smash my dream of love

Did your bed and bookshelf go
And run run run away?
These four walls saw the rise and fall of
the midnight getaway
Seems like there's a hole in my dreams
Or so it seems
Yet nothing means, anything, anymore
