Default Music Of Manchester!!

That's Mancester UK folks!

I recently read that Manchester has produced more 'rockstars' (etc) per capita than any other City in the World...and I think it could be true!

Manchester UK has certainly produced some of the most original, innovative and uniquely cool musicians in the world....so here's a thread dedicated to that one subject....the Music of Manchester!

Please post anything from Manchester and local area that you love...anything historical that helped to shape the sound of Manchester etc.

Ok, to get the ball rolling I'll post one of the best known records from Manchester's most famous record label...Factory.

New Order- Blue Monday (12" Version)

Apart from Fools Gold, Loose Fit by Happy Mondays is my favourite Manc tune. It's never far from my Facebook wall.

I love Loose Fit too...I put it on repeat on the jukebox for about an hour once years ago playing pool! Pissed a few old guys off that did...quite selfish of me!

Anyway, you mentioned a classic so here it is...

Stone Roses-Fools Gold

The gold road’s sure a long road
Winds on through the hills for fifteen days
The pack on my back is aching
The straps seem to cut me like a knife
The gold road’s sure a long road
Winds on through the hills for fifteen days
The pack on my back is aching
The straps seem to cut me like a knife

I’m no clown I won’t back down
I don’t need you to tell me what’s going down
Down down down down da down down down
Down down down down da down down down

I’m standing alone
I’m watching you all
I’m seeing you sinking
I’m standing alone
You’re weighing the gold
I’m watching you sinking
Fool’s gold

These boots were made for walking
The marquis de sade don’t wear no boots like these
Gold’s just around the corner
Breakdown’s coming up round the bend

Sometimes you have to try to get along dear
I know the truth and I know what you’re thinking

Down down down down da down down down

I’m standing alone
I’m watching you all
I’m seeing you sinking
I’m standing alone
You’re weighing the gold
I’m watching you sinking
Fool’s gold

Fool’s gold

I’m standing alone
I’m watching you all
I’m seeing you sinking
I’m standing alone
You’re weighing the gold
I’m watching you sinking
Fool’s gold

I really tried to like Oasis, but I just don't. I like a couple of Noel's songs, Wonderwall...um...oh, and I like that one off the first album, Live Forever, but I just found their work too plagiaristic to be classed as skilful appropriation. But the main thing was Liam's voice and stage persona! Oh, they could have been Mozart & Beethoven reincarnated and I wouldn't be able to bear it just from that one band member turning me off lol.

Tbh, though, I wasn't that big on late Britpop/Indie. I liked the earlier bands such as Suede, Pulp, Manics, but never really got into Oasis. Blur had some good tracks, but I wasn't really a big fan of them either.

Manchester for me was The Smiths, Stone Roses, New Order, James etc.

Default Dance, dance, dance to the radio...

This was the first Joy Division song that I really loved, I was about 16 when I first heard this and I dont think I'd ever heard anything quite like it before...still sounds very unique now. Amazing lyrics too..

Joy Division-Transmission (Album Version)

Transmission-Live (Peel Session 1979)

Radio, live transmission.
Radio, live transmission.

Listen to the silence, let it ring on.
Eyes, dark grey lenses frightened of the sun.
We would have a fine time living in the night,
Left to blind destruction,
Waiting for our sight.

And we would go on as though nothing was wrong.
And hide from these days we remained all alone.
Staying in the same place, just staying out the time.
Touching from a distance,
Further all the time.

Dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, to the radio.
Dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, to the radio.
Dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, to the radio.
Dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, to the radio.

Well I could call out when the going gets tough.
The things that we've learnt are no longer enough.
No language, just sound, that's all we need know, to synchronise
love to the beat of the show.

And we could dance.

Dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, to the radio.
Dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, to the radio.
Dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, to the radio.
Dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, to the radio.

It's a shame that Tony Wilson died a few years ago, as it seems the Manchester music scene has died with him.

Here's a clip of the Happy Mondays in their prime:

Yeah I like it but it borrowed quite a lot from an earlier Stone Roses track, Don't Stop...with the backward track effects etc in my opinion, here it is

Stone Roses-Dont Stop

Don't stop
Isn't it funny how you shine?
Don't stop
Isn't it funny how you shine?

Here the sea spray give
I was with her
We're under the ship so get me over
Now that was me
Listen
Now she fishes now
Listen

There was no one out there we used
There is the news for me useless
Now so much waste
How we'll be teased

Don't stop
Isn't it funny how you shine?
Don't stop
Isn't it funny how you shine?

Oh won't you just ask me
You're an imbecile
What's the matter for everyone I feel
Pain blues singer
He's playing just a guitar
From the top

I wake I still look I feel loose
We're all here now who's the first
Ease into my heart
He must be one of us

Don't stop
Isn't it funny how you shine?

Hi gatherer!

I see you've got yourself another music thread going...afraid I can't contribute much, not being from around there, but here goes, with a little help from ixquick:http://www.prideofmanchester.com/music/Top100-intro.htm
