British 'Spy' Found Murdered Near MI6 HQ

A man who worked for the Secret Intelligence Service MI6 has been found murdered in a flat near the organisation's headquarters.

His body was discovered stuffed in a sports bag in the bathroom of the property in Pimlico, central London, on Monday afternoon.

Sky's Simon Newton, at the scene, said: "There are also unconfirmed reports that there were some mobile phones and SIM cards laid out in the flat in a ritualistic fashion.

"And that the body was found in the bath. But both those things have not been confirmed yet by the Metropolitan Police."

Sky sources say police have ruled out terrorism and are working on the theory the man's death is connected to his personal life.

The dead man, believed to be in his 30s, was a communications officer who worked for GCHQ, the Government's intelligence information arm.

He was on secondment to MI6, the Secret Intelligence Service that has its headquarters about half a mile from where the body was found.

Neighbours said the man's first name was Gareth and he had a Welsh accent.

One woman, Laura Houghton, described him as "extremely friendly".

She told Sky News police had knocked on her door on Monday evening, asking her if she had heard anything in the neighbouring flat but she had not.

She added: "His windows were always shut and curtains were often closed. I could never tell if anyone was in.

"It was strange that we never saw him come and go. I just assumed he worked

away."

The victim is thought to have a doctorate in maths from Cambridge University and was believed to be a keen cyclist.

A landlady who rented him a flat in Cheltenham told the Daily Mail: "He was polite and mild-mannered and wouldn't hurt a fly. He was forever off on bike rides but never really had friends around.

"Sometimes you could hear tapes whirring from his flat. It must have been audio cassettes he used for work. He never told me what they were."

Scotland Yard has launched a murder investigation into the incident, led by its Homicide and Serious Crime Command.

A spokesman said the body has not yet been formally identified. A post-mortem examination is due to take place later.

Officers were called to a top-floor flat in Alderney Street at around 4.40pm on Monday following reports from work colleagues the occupant had not been seen for some time.

They discovered the body in the bathroom and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cordons were placed around the property as officers examined the contents of the flat.

Scotland Yard says it is following up "several lines of inquiry".

The man's death is the highest profile murder in the UK of someone linked to the secret services since that of Alexander Litvinenko.

The former KGB agent died in hospital after being poisoned by radioactive polonium-210 in 2006.

I wonder if it's something to to with the Dr Kelly case, seeing as there has been increased interest during the last couple of weeks. Incidentally, the body has been there for about two weeks at least.

Alderney St Pimlico, apparently a neighbourhood of bankers and politicians. Has

Tony Blair got property there? He seems one to watch having previous form with David Kelly's assassination.

There are also the bankers, their mission to wrest control of nations from elected representatives is real and undeniable, perhaps he found out too much and was removed from his duties in the usual way.

Land Registry documents revealed the block at number 36 is owned by a private company, New Rodina, which means 'motherland' in Russian. Its details are hidden because it is registered in the British Virgin Islands and is not listed with Companies House. The property was bought for £675,250 in 2000 with a mortgage from the Royal Bank of Scotland and has been remortgaged twice, in September 2005 and February 2006.
The documents revealed the owner operated through a law firm known as Park Nelson. The firm once occupied a rented office block in Bell Yard, off Fleet Street, but no longer appears to exist.
Public documents revealed that several current and former residents of the freehold block have links to London and Cheltenham.
Ex-Tory leader Michael Howard and Sir Leon Brittan are among a host of politicians and bankers who have homes there, residents said.
He was employed at government 'listening post' at GCHQ.

No, I don't have a link, but someone on this forum put breaking alert that there was a govt building on fire, in Lambeth I think, S London anyway. Nothing else. I haven't heard or seen anything about it since. So thought it smelled a bit.
