In January, an obscure academic article from 2008 made the rounds in the blogosphere that had been written by Obama’s information czar, Prof. Cass Sunstein.

Here’s an excerpt:
...we suggest a distinctive tactic for breaking up the hard core of extremists who supply conspiracy theories: cognitive infiltration of extremist groups, whereby government agents or their allies ... will undermine the crippled epistemology of those who subscribe to such theories. They do so by planting doubts about the theories and stylized facts that circulate within such groups, thereby introducing beneficial cognitive diversity(confusion).
Why should you be worried about this?

Glenn Greenwald from Salon.com explains it:
Sunstein advocates that the Government's stealth infiltration should be accomplished by sending covert agents into "chat rooms, online social networks, or even real-space groups." He also proposes that the Government make secret payments to so-called "independent" credible voices to bolster the Government's messaging (on the ground that those who don't believe government sources will be more inclined to listen to those who appear independent while secretly acting on behalf of the Government). This program would target those advocating false "conspiracy theories," which they define to mean: "an attempt to explain an event or practice by reference to the machinations of powerful people, who have also managed to conceal their role."

Sunstein's response to these criticisms is . . . as telling as the proposal itself. He acknowledges that some "conspiracy theories" previously dismissed as insane and fringe have turned out to be entirely true (his examples: the CIA really did secretly administer LSD in "mind control" experiments; the DOD really did plot the commission of terrorist acts inside the U.S. with the intent to blame Castro; the Nixon White House really did bug the DNC headquarters). Given that history, how could it possibly be justified for the U.S. Government to institute covert programs designed to undermine anti-government "conspiracy theories," discredit government critics, and increase faith and trust in government pronouncements? Because, says Sunstein, such powers are warranted only when wielded by truly well-intentioned government officials who want to spread The Truth and Do Good -- i.e., when used by people like Cass Sunstein and Barack Obama:

Throughout, we assume a well-motivated government that aims to eliminate conspiracy theories, or draw their poison, if and only if social welfare is improved by doing so.

But it's precisely because the Government is so often not "well-motivated" that such powers are so dangerous. Advocating them on the ground that "we will use them well" is every authoritarian's claim. More than anything else, this is the toxic mentality that consumes our political culture: when our side does X, X is Good, because we're Good and are working for Good outcomes. That was what led hordes of Bush followers to endorse the same large-government surveillance programs they long claimed to oppose, and what leads so many Obama supporters now to justify actions that they spent the last eight years opposing.

There are obviously a few on here and other sites that I visit regularly. Sometimes they launch direct attacks but other times they work by playing different posters off against each other in order to discredit the information/theory being discussed.

I wonder what they categorize as "hard core of extremists who supply conspiracy theories". I guess they categorize people who believe the 911 attack was an inside job as extremists. Sounds Orwellian to me, where anyone who has any opinion that isn't the same as that of the government is labeled an extremist.

It doesn't matter people will accuse you of being an agent simply for disagreeing with them. Or having much knowledge on certain topics.

I see a thread and think I know a bit about that and go post there. If other's didn't keep posting those threads on certain topics I wouldn't post there.

Theories are okay and is what many posts are made of, but too post absolute truth when possible is a bonus. Not a paid bonus though!

It's a maze and all this info of confliciting opinions is like extra parts added to the maze (confusing).

There's no debate if everyone believed the same or batted for the same side.

Drip drip drip. Propaganda comes from all sides. You may think you're being told the truth, but may actually have swallowed a pack of lies.

One lot of propaganda maybe more convincing than an other. In time you may even realise what you used to believe was lies and even vice versa.

I doubt anyone can spend alot of time here and not have some of their views changed. Be it down to agents or whoever.

Some topics are so deep and complicated, it's not possible to say all about them, sometimes better to use keywords (subtopics).

It's a worry when you use plain English and describe things properly (at least in your own mind) some people still don't get it, unless they are agents of deceit taking the Mick.

I find most shills pretty obvious and fairly unintelligent. Typical government drones who wouldnt get a job in the private sector. A minority though.

However, i do think they are supported by a mass of supposedly 'well educated', 'intellectual' people who self police others because they have been so brainwashed by the system. I think these are most of the shills you come across.

The truth is more than a bonus, it has to be the objective.

The COINTELPRO approach is two pronged.

1) Attack serious and rational conspiracy theories.
2) Create bogus irrational conspiracy theories and thereby smear rational conspiracy theories by association.

You can see it right here is this forum, I am often accused of being a shill (epecially in chemtrail threads) but I always argue from a rational base.

Anyone who thinks all conspiracy theories are real wants their head examined - seriously!!!

Getting to the truth is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING.

Meet-ups arere a great way to actually meet the people you talk to on here.
I have lost count of the amount of people who claim so-and-so is a paid shill, misinformer etc..when in fact they are (nearly, lol) normal, average, everyday people, nice ones too!

Guess that's one way of saying hey I am real this is me hello how are you let's have some fun etc. I never have the cash or transport like hundreds of miles to travel to the usual meets. Yet I get called paid agent by some here. The latest false label is Zionist LOL!

About sources many sites will host the same story and if you track it through searches them most of them are from MSM, or some smaller not so well known local or foreign news.

Some stuff is from people's own blogs or a conspiracy theorists spin on things. If the latter are agents, or simply misinformed, then there's no saying there's any more truth there.
