Tsar Family Jewelry Found in Swedish Archive By Niklas Magnusson Aug. 28 (Bloomberg) -- A collection of jewelry that belonged to the family of Russia’s last tsar and was found after 91 years stashed away in a Swedish government archive will go on sale at Sotheby’s in London in November. The jewelry-encrusted cigarette boxes and cufflinks, many made by Faberge, were deposited by Maria Pavlovna, aunt of Russia’s last tsar Nicholas II, at the Swedish embassy in St. Petersburg in 1918 following the Russian Revolution. The items made their way to Stockholm, where they were found in an archive at the Foreign Ministry when it moved its archives last year. The objects, which include 100 cigarette boxes, are expected to fetch about 1 million pounds ($1.6 million), Sofia Stroem, a spokeswoman for Sotheby’s in Stockholm, said in a telephone interview. “Unknown for generations until their recent rediscovery, the objects, some of which still contain evidence of use by the Romanovs -- remnants of tobacco and period Bogdanov cigarettes -- truly evoke the grandeur and sublime taste of their original owners,” Marcus Linell of Sotheby’s said in a statement. The most expensive cigarette boxes may fetch as much as 90,000 pounds, while a pair of cufflinks could sell for as much as 6,000 pounds, according to Sotheby’s estimates. The cheapest cigarette boxes may sell for as little as 700 pounds, while the cheapest cufflinks may fetch as little as 80 pounds, said the auction house. 10:11pm Earthquake strikes Snowy Mountains August 30, 2009 Article from: Australian Associated Press A SMALL earthquake has struck the Snowy Mountains. The epicentre of the quake, felt at 12.05pm (AEST) today, was at Lake Eucumbene, about 30 kilometres from Cooma and 25 kilometres from Jindabyne. Its magnitude of 2.8 on the Richter scale was half the intensity of the 1989 Newcastle earthquake, which killed 13 people. Australian Seismological Centre director Kevin McCue said residents living about five kilometres from the Lake Eucumbene dam reported feeling tremors. Seismological equipment in Canberra, Queanbeyan and Bombala detected the quake. "What we are trying to do in determining smaller quakes is find out what faults are active," Mr McCue said. Mr McCue said a bigger quake could cause structural damage to a dam wall in the area. "It's not if but when," he said. "Rivers flow along faults and dams are built on rivers." Earthquakes are a regular occurrence at Lake Eucumbene, he added. Earthquakes happen more often than elections in Canberra. The national capital was last shaken by a small quake in the early hours of Thursday. Kevin McCue, director of the Australian Seismological Centre, at the time said that quake measured 2.5 on the Richter scale and hit about 2.15am (AEST). This would only have been felt by people who were up and about at that hour, he said. The epicentre of the quake was near a fault line near Lake George, where there is a large wind farm. Mr McCue said the wind turbines "may have given a little shudder". A 5.2 magnitude quake hit the area in 1959. No property was damaged in (the making of) the earthquake today.... A little point, I keep noticing for

SEVEN people were killed and two children critically injured at a trailer park in the US state of Georgia yesterday. A murder investigation is under way following the slayings at New Hope Plantation in Brunswick. Last night it emerged the victims may have been shot dead. A neighbour said someone kicked in the door of the mobile home and started shooting inside. Another local said: "One of the men who lives there came home this morning. "He came out yelling, 'My whole family is dead'. "Five minutes later the cops were here." Glynn County police chief Matt Doering said officers found the victims, who range "from a young age to a very old age", after responding to a 999 call at around 8am. He added: "This is a record for us. We've never had such an incident with so many victims." At lunchtime a woman came to the scene in a white car, spoke briefly to residents and screamed: "They killed my boy." Coroner Jimmy Durben said: "It is the worst crime scene I have witnessed in my 17-year history in the coroner's office." Police are searching for Mr Holding after he failed to return home from a hike on Sunday afternoon. Police said Mr Holding set out on the hike alone on Saturday and sent a text to his partner about 6.30pm saying he had arrived at Federation Hut. Mr Holding was expected home about 4pm Sunday, but the alarm was raised about 9.30pm when resort management said Mr Holding's car was still in the car park. Police have been unable to reach Mr Holding on his mobile phone. Premier John Brumby said he was concered for Mr Holding's safety, but Mr Holding was fit and determined and well prepared for the hike. "I am concerned for Tim's welfare, but I know he is an experienced hiker and was welll equipped for the conditions," he said. "Presumably he stayed (at Federation Hut) on Saturday night, but he would’ve then walked out Sunday and yesterday … it was very windy, very cloudy there was more snow and more rain and so conditions would be quite difficult," Mr Brumby told 3AW. "I know those conditions and as someone who’s done that walk over to Feathertop, but only ever in summer, it’s a tough walk and it’s particularly (tough) in cold conditions and it’s very exposed. "I would like to think that he’ll walk out but you never know with these things." Three police and an SES search and rescue volunteers set out about midnight night to check the hut, and arrived about 5am yesterday, where they failed to find Mr Holding. Search and rescue crews from Melbourne began a ground search of the lower part of the mountain at first light. Weather bureau forecaster Michael Halfpenny said the temperature in the area had not been above zero all weekend. "Saturday night it was about -7C, very cold and there's been a few snow flurries," he said. "Currently the weather in the area is about -2C and there's still the occassional snow showers." Harrietville Hotel Motel operator Tony Mitchell said the weather conditions were not good. "The only thing that would catch him out is the weather," he said. "By all reports the conditions are atrocious, basically a white out, anybody walking in that could not see far. "Anybody with a level of experience knows you don't go out on a day like that." Mr Holding was understood to be well equipped for the conditions and had hiked in the area previously. USS Missouri to get Pearl Harbor shipyard makeover PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii — "The "Mighty Mo," the World War II battleship best known for hosting the formal surrender of Japan in 1945, is heading to the shipyard for repairs. The USS Missouri, now a decommissioned vessel called the Battleship Missouri Memorial, will leave its historic spot at Battleship Row at Pearl Harbor in October. The move will come shortly after the vessel on Wednesday hosts a ceremony marking the 64th anniversary of Japan's surrender. U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawaii, and Ret. Lt. Gen. Wallace "Chip" Gregson, newly sworn in as Assistant Secretary of Defense, are scheduled to speak at the event. At least 20 World War II veterans are expected to attend, including 89-year-old Pearl Harbor survivor Edward F. Borucki of Southampton, Mass. "It's a sentimental journey," Borucki said, who lost 33 shipmates when a Japanese torpedo and bombs hit the USS Helena. The 65-year-old ship is in good shape, but it still needs to go to Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard for repairs because rust is protruding from peeling paint in areas and the teak wood deck is warped and bent in others.
