Photo:Michael Clayton-Jones Gerard Ryle and Adrian Lowe August 3, 2009[/B] THE Australian Trade Commission informed one of its most senior diplomats he was under police investigation for alleged child sex offences, allowing him to resign quietly and return home where he repeatedly sexually abused a Victorian 15-year-old schoolboy. John Finnin held a top-secret security clearance from the Federal Government until July 2006, when it was alleged he was involved in an international child sex ring. No charges were laid on that matter. Austrade was told Finnin was suspected of using his diplomatic status and access to Australian embassies around the world to traffic in young children for sex. The Age believes Austrade co-operated with a Federal Police investigation into the matter after European police first put the allegation. But Austrade later took the unusual step of recalling Finnin from Germany — where he was deputy consul general and head of trade for Europe, the Middle East and Africa — and told him he was under investigation. Finnin, who vehemently denied the allegations, was then allowed to leave Austrade with his reputation intact, quietly joining fuel technology company Firepower — now being investigated by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission — and returning to Melbourne. Last month the Victorian County Court remanded Finnin for sentencing after he was found guilty of 23 child sex charges after a trial lasting almost three weeks. Seven charges were for entering into an agreement for the provision of sexual services by a child; another seven were for committing an indecent act in the presence of a child and a further six were for sexual penetration of a child. The court heard that Finnin paid a Melbourne boy, 15, at least $100 for sex on seven occasions and cruised online for sex with other New Zealand and American children as young as 13. Much of the evidence brought against Finnin came from the Federal Police, which secretly continued its investigation after Finnin resigned from Austrade in May 2006. He left his job two months later after working out his notice. The Age believes police were assigned to a special taskforce, with 24-hour surveillance set up in an empty unit opposite Finnin’s new luxurious Sandringham apartment. At the time, he cruised around Melbourne in a Maserati Quattroporto — a bonus in addition to his $500,000-a year salary as chief executive of Firepower. The County Court was told that a notebook and memo pads were seized from Finnin’s home in 2007, on which were written details of online contacts including ‘‘16-year-old Hawthorn boy, swimmer, knows other boys same age’’ and his email address, and ‘‘15- year-old Sydney boy’’ and his email address. Transcripts of online chats Finnin allegedly had in 2007 showed him telling an American boy, 15, he would ‘‘love two boys — I have plenty of money and space to care for two boys’’. The boy told Finnin he had a brother, 13, and then allegedly discussed with him how the boys could come to Australia. In another, he allegedly told an 18-year-old who questioned his age that ‘‘love is blind and you will find that out one day’’. After Finnin joined Firepower, Austrade continued to work with him, entering into a service agreement with the company and giving it $394,009 in export grants. The service agreement allowed Finnin to continue to use Australian embassies and ambassadors’ private residences to promote the merits of the company’s supposed fuel-saving devices. Austrade’s involvement with Firepower was crucial in giving the company credibility. Firepower is now being investigated for allegedly taking Australian investors for an estimated $100 million. Firepower made nothing, it sold nothing, and the Firepower entity that Austrade entered into the service agreement did not exist. The name had been made up, but nobody checked. Furthermore, Firepower was given a special place on the Austrade website, where it was promoted as an export success in Russia. This also is being investigated. Austrade refused to answer nine questions put by The Age, including who was in the room when Finnin was informed about the police investigation. Austrade did not deny any of the allegations, some of which were referred to in the court and others by Finnin himself in interviews with The Age. Canadians flee
as 530 wildfires rage Montreal August 3, 2009 THOUSANDS of people in the Canadian province of British Columbia have been ordered to leave their homes as more than 500 fires rage out of control in the province. The blazes have been fuelled by dry forests and record high temperatures. ‘‘Our province is facing the highest levels of wildfire risk in memory,’’ the province’s Premier, Gordon Campbell, told the CBC network at the weekend. ‘‘Record high temperatures have created a serious situation,’’ Mr Campbell said. ‘‘[Conditions] can best be described as tinder dry. ‘‘The forests across this province are in probably the driest situation they’ve been that any of us can recall.’’ Temperatures in some parts of the province had reached more than 36 degrees for several days running, Environment Canada said. ‘‘There are 531 forest fires currently burning,’’ Mr Campbell said. Evacuation orders had been issued for some communities, while an additional 3000 people were told to be ready to leave their homes. Fifteen hundred people were evacuated from their homes in the town of Fintry on Saturday, just two days after being allowed to return after a previous evacuation. British Columbia is spending $C3 million ($A3.3 million) a day fighting the fires. Mr Campbell asked people to stay out of the forests in order to avoid any risk of being trapped in a fire or accidentally starting a new one. Since April 1, firefighters in British Columbia have responded to 1817 wildfires that have burned 51,042 hectares of forests and grasslands, Mr Campbell’s office said. By comparison, at the same point in 2003 there were 959 fires and 31,000 hectares burned. A fire that was sparked by a lightning strike late on Thursday near the Whistler ski resort, a venue of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, was under control and the site remained open, an organising committee official said. |

But because of the way you are going about this, [b] the honor will not be yours, for the LORD will hand Sisera over to a woman." So Deborah went with Barak to Kedesh, 10 where he summoned Zebulun and Naphtali. Ten thousand men followed him, and Deborah also went with him. 11 Now Heber the Kenite had left the other Kenites, the descendants of Hobab, Moses' brother-in-law, [c] and pitched his tent by the great tree in Zaanannim near Kedesh. 12 When they told Sisera that Barak son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor, 13 Sisera gathered together his nine hundred iron chariots and all the men with him, from Harosheth Haggoyim to the Kishon River. 14 Then Deborah said to Barak, "Go! This is the day the LORD has given Sisera into your hands. Has not the LORD gone ahead of you?" So Barak went down Mount Tabor, followed by ten thousand men. 15 At Barak's advance, the LORD routed Sisera and all his chariots and army by the sword, and Sisera abandoned his chariot and fled on foot. 16 But Barak pursued the chariots and army as far as Harosheth Haggoyim. All the troops of Sisera fell by the sword; not a man was left. 17 Sisera, however, fled on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, because there were friendly relations between Jabin king of Hazor and the clan of Heber the Kenite. 18 Jael went out to meet Sisera and said to him, "Come, my Lord , come right in. Don't be afraid." So he entered her tent, and she put a covering over him. 19 "I'm thirsty," he said. "Please give me some water." She opened a skin of milk, gave him a drink, and covered him up. 20 "Stand in the doorway of the tent," he told her. "If someone comes by and asks you, 'Is anyone here?' say 'No.' " 21 But Jael, Heber's wife, picked up a tent peg and a hammer and went quietly to him while he lay fast asleep, exhausted. She drove the peg through his temple into the ground, and he died. 22 Barak came by in pursuit of Sisera, and Jael went out to meet him. "Come," she said, "I will show you the man you're looking for." So he went in with her, and there lay Sisera with the tent peg through his temple-dead. 23 On that day God subdued Jabin, the Canaanite king, before the Israelites. 24 And the hand of the Israelites grew stronger and stronger against Jabin, the Canaanite king, until they destroyed him.
