THE Federal Government will unveil
a $300 million infrastructure spending package
for local governments today.

Prime Minster Kevin Rudd will make the announcement
at a meeting of local mayors and shire presidents
at Parliament House in Canberra.

"The Government will be announcing the details of our $300 million regional and local community infrastructure program ... at the Australian Council of Local Government meeting," Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese told ABC Radio on Tuesday morning.

Mr Albanese said the money would be used to fix community infrastructure such as playgrounds, parks and libraries.

"There will be conditions attached and they will be made by the prime minister today."

Mr Albanese said the money was the third part of the Government's $10.4 billion stimulus plan aimed at warding off the effects of the global credit crunch.

"We know that community infrastructure can make a big contribution to local job creation and also provide a stimulus to local economies," he said.

"We want to see jobs created throughout Australia and that is what this package will be aimed at."

BREWER Lion Nathan, which has made an
$8 billion play for Coca-Cola Amatil,

has reported a fall in annual profit,
after paying for its acquisition of boutique brewer
J Boag & Son.

Lion Nathan (lnn.ASX:Quote,News), the company behind brands such as
Heineken, Tooheys and XXXX, posted a 3.3 per cent fall in net profit to $272.7 million for fiscal 2008, from the previous year.

The result was impacted by one-off net costs of
$5.6 million related to the J Boag buy.

Its operating net profit was $278.3 million for the year ended
September 30, up 4.2 per cent, as beer volumes grew,

Lion Nathan now expects operating net profit -
before significant and one-off items -
to be in a range of $300 million
to $315 million in fiscal 2009,
despite the challenging economic times.

"Whilst economic conditions are volatile at present and the new financial year will be challenging, the company remains confident of an earnings step up in the 2009 financial year,'' it said.

Prime Minster Kevin Rudd will make the announcement at a meeting of local mayors and shire presidents at Parliament House in Canberra. "The Government will be announcing the details of our $300 million regional and local community infrastructure program ... at the Australian Council of Local Government meeting," Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese told ABC Radio on Tuesday morning. Mr Albanese said the money would be used to fix community infrastructure such as playgrounds, parks and libraries. "There will be conditions attached and they will be made by the prime minister today." Mr Albanese said the money was the third part of the Government's $10.4 billion stimulus plan aimed at warding off the effects of the global credit crunch. "We know that community infrastructure can make a big contribution to local job creation and also provide a stimulus to local economies," he said. "We want to see jobs created throughout Australia and that is what this package will be aimed at."
