USC English professor named Calif. poet laureate

SACRAMENTO – Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has appointed a University of Southern California English professor and author as California's next poet laureate.

Carol Muske-Dukes (mus-KEE dukes) founded the school's graduate program in literature and creative writing.

She has written seven books of poetry, four novels and two collections of essays. Her most recent work, “Sparrow,” was a National Book Award finalist.

She also taught creative writing at a women's prison on Riker's Island in New York.

The poet laureate works with the California Arts Council to promote poetry, especially among children. The council takes nominations and recommends four candidates to the governor, who made his announcement Thursday.

The position comes with a $10,000 stipend over the two-year term.

The state Senate must approve the appointment of the 62-year-old professor, who replaces poet laureate Al Young.

ENGLAND striker Michael Owen is planning to splash 15 million euros on a site once destined for a theme park.

According to sources, agents working for the giant US company had been buying up large chunks of land around Manilva.
While the company denied it, sources in the town hall, confirmed that Disney had been looking at sites.
Owen has been busy planning for his retirement from football, for which he is reported to be about to sign a new 25 million euro contract.
Last year the 28-year-old opened his multi-million police horse-racing establishment in Cheshire.
Owen said: “You hear stories about retired footballers turning to drink or getting depressed. Well I don’t want to end up being a miserable so-and-so.”
