Tanzania: Citizen Writer Awarded

The Citizen feature writer Salome Gregory has won the 2008 Water Sanitation Hygiene (Wash) Media Award in the gender category.

Ms Gregory was presented with the accolade at the Wash Media Awards gala in Stockholm last week. The Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) and the Stockholm International Water Institute (Siwi) sponsored the event.

The awards aim at raising public awareness about community problems through media to pave the way for decision-makers at all levels to act.

Ms Gregory emerged the winner in the gender award category for her feature highlighting hardships that pupils were facing in Same District due to lack of water.

The article said girls were unable to attend school when they were in menstruation because there was no water for keeping them clean as most of them had only one pair of school uniform.

The article also said some pupils skipped school on Wednesdays to trek up to 30km in search of water.

Ms Gregory urged journalists in the country to write about issues touching on people's lives at the grassroots. She said water and sanitation issues are not covered well in Africa where many journalists concentrated on politics.

"Let's be the voice of the voiceless. Reporters must not choose what to write. We must write about topics that depict the lives of ordinary people," she said. Ms Gregory said she was assigned to write an article on the shortage of science teachers in secondary schools in Same District when she realised that the shortage of water was a far more serious problem. She also urged media houses to uplift junior journalists by sending them to rural areas to write about the harsh realities of life that ordinary people faced.

Award-winning Afrikaans poet and author George Weideman has died, the SABC reported on Thursday.

The 61-year-old, who was the first recipient of the Sanlam prize for Afrikaans theatre in July 2004, died of leukaemia.

He had published more than 15 books, including poetry, short story collections and youth novels, and received several prizes for his youth novels and radio dramas broadcast on Afrikaans radio station RSG.

He was a lecturer at the Peninsula Technikon, now part of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, before his retirement. - Sapa

Burns fans mull over Jackson link

Rabbie Burns experts have reacted with astonishment to reports that Michael Jackson has recorded an album of the poet's work put to a modern backing.

The musician's friend David Gest said they had recorded the Bard's verse at a studio in California.

Southern Scottish Counties Burns Association president David Baird said he was "incredulous" at the reports.

He said he was happy to see the poet's work promoted to a modern audience but not if it made Burns "look silly".

Mr Baird, from Dumfries, said he was surprised when he heard about the project. "I was quite incredulous at the thought that Michael Jackson on the eve of his 50th birthday was thinking of plagiarising Burns and cashing in on the 250th anniversary next year," he said.

He said he had very mixed feelings about the proposition.

"The idea of turning Burns's tunes and songs, which he carefully collected, into 'show tunes' just kind of grates a wee bit," he said.

"I think it is great that anybody is trying to bring Burns and his philosophy and his poetry to the forefront of people's minds.

"But I think there are ways and means of doing it that don't actually make him look silly."

Own interpretation

Mr Baird added that while he did not think the poet's work should be preserved "in aspic" he felt any music should be in keeping with his words.

"There is myriad interpretations of Burns and every man has his own interpretation," he said.

"There are some beautiful songs in the settings Burns himself chose and I think it would be sad to move away from some of that.

"I think there is a need to reflect on why it is that he set particular pieces to particular pieces of music."

Spielberg 'to make Tintin movie'

Steven Spielberg is currently working on Indiana Jones 4
Steven Spielberg and The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson are to bring Tintin to the big screen, according to industry reports.
Movie publication Variety reports that a three feature deal has been struck, with the pair directing one each and the third still to be decided.

Jackson's special effects team Weta Digital will use 3-D animation to bring the junior reporter to life.

The character was created by Herge, aka Belgian artist Georges Remi, in 1929.

Weta has already produced a 20-minute test reel showing how the finished films might look, Variety said.

'Distinctive look'

Spielberg told the publication: "Herge's characters have been reborn as living beings, expressing emotion and a soul which goes far beyond anything we've seen to date with computer animated characters.


Tintin books are still bestsellers
"We want Tintin's adventures to have the reality of a live-action film, and yet Peter and I felt that shooting them in a traditional live-action format would simply not honour the distinctive look of the characters and world that Herge created."

It is reported that the stories, detailing the adventures of the reporter, his dog Snowy and best friend Captain Haddock, will be taken from the 23 albums Herge published between 1929 and 1976.

The series is estimated to have sold 200 million copies and been translated into over 50 languages.

Spielberg is a longstanding fan and has been looking to make a film version of the books for 25 years.

Both directors will become available by the end of the year after they have finished working on Lovely Bones and Indiana Jones 4.

The deal comes after Jackson agreed to direct Lovely Bones, based on Alice Sebold's book, with Spielberg's DreamWorks studio.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Barbara Warren, one of the world's elite endurance athletes in her age group and one-half of a well-known pair of triathlete twins, has died after breaking her neck in a bike crash at the Santa Barbara Triathlon. She was 65.

Warren, of San Diego, died Tuesday at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital when her family told doctors to take her off a ventilator, her twin sister Angelika Drake told the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Warren crashed her bike on a downhill road about halfway through the 34-mile cycling section of the race on Saturday, race director Joe Coito said.

Warren was paralyzed from the neck down and was breathing with the aid of the ventilator. Drake said her sister told the family by blinking and nodding that she wanted to die.

"I talked to her and she nodded over and over and over again. She wanted to leave," Drake said. "No athlete would like to have a life with only their eyes talking."

Warren's two daughters and her husband Tom were also with her at the hospital when she died.

Warren won her age group in the 2003 Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Hawaii. She competed in the race, the world's top triathlon, 13 times and finished in the top five in her age group eight times.

The two sisters alternated riding bikes in the Race Across America, covering 2,983 miles in less than 10 days.

Warren also competed in a seven-day race across the Sahara Desert, and finished a triple Ironman in France that included a 7.2-mile swim, 336-mile bike ride and 78.6-mile run.

Warren was well-loved among younger triathletes.

Michellie Jones, who won a triathlon silver medal in the 2000 Olympics and won the 2006 Ironman World Title, was also a twin who remembered her fondly.

"She always asked about my sister," Jones said. "She understood the bond."

Warren's twin said she lay next to her sister as she died.

"My heart and my soul are gone," Drake said. "She was everything in my life."
