Kaziranga National Park is a national park in the Golaghat and Nagaon districts of Assam, India. It is a World Heritage Site, and two-thirds of the world's Great One-horned Rhinoceroses live in the park. Kaziranga has the highest density of tigers among protected areas in the world and was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2006. The park has large breeding populations of elephants, water buffalo and swamp deer. Kaziranga is recognised as an Important Bird Area by Birdlife International for conservation of avifaunal species. The park has achieved notable success in wildlife conservation compared to other protected areas in India. Located on the edge of the Eastern Himalaya biodiversity hotspot, the park combines high-species diversity and visibility. Kaziranga is a vast expanse of tall elephant grass, marshland and dense tropical moist broadleaf forests crisscrossed by four major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, and has numerous small bodies of water. Kaziranga has been the theme of several books, documentaries and songs. The park celebrated its centenary in 2005 after its establishment in 1905 as a reserve forest.

My son and I spent the day downtown Denver trying to hang with some peaceful protester/anti war types. It was quite an experience, he wants to go back tomorrow.
Anyway, on our way back to the car my son saw another little boy and being the giver of love that he is, he ran up to that little boy and hugged him.
His parents smiled and said, "why don't you show him your bag of shredded money!!!"
No shite, a bag of what looked to be as real as I could tell, of shredded American money. And I asked where he got it and the Mom said outside the Denver MINT!!! She said they weren't handing it out to everyone.....
What the heck is that? I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. Nor if my son hadn't ran and hugged some random child.???

Oil rises above $119 on storm fears

TOKYO (Reuters) – Oil rose for a fourth straight day to above $119 a barrel on Thursday, on fears Tropical Storm Gustav may hit the Gulf of Mexico after it morphs into a major hurricane, crippling the heart of U.S. offshore production.

Crude for October delivery rose 93 cents to $119.08 a barrel by 0656 GMT, after earlier hitting an intraday high of $119.25 and chalking a gain of $3.56 over the past three sessions. London Brent crude was up $1.03 cents at $117.25 a barrel.

Gustav is expected to hit the U.S. Gulf Coast around Monday as the first major hurricane to threaten U.S. energy installations there since Katrina and Rita in 2005, and about 85 percent of U.S. offshore oil and gas production could be in its path.

AccuWeather said Gustav could strengthen into a Category 4 or 5 storm over the Gulf -- home to a quarter of U.S. crude oil production and 15 percent of the nation's natural gas output.

Shell Oil Co, the U.S. Gulf of Mexico's largest producer, said its oil production would be affected as early as Thursday as it evacuated all workers from offshore operations. Gustav could shut down 85 percent of U.S. production platforms in the Gulf, private forecaster Planalytics said.

"It looks as though the hurricane is on track to inflicting damage," said Ken Hasegawa, an analyst at broker Newedge in Tokyo, adding the storm is the only major reason behind the extended gains in oil prices. "It would be very difficult to be in a short position today and tomorrow."

Hasegawa added oil prices could surpass last week's high of $122.04 by the end of day.

"This is the time of the year that (hurricane) premiums can be put into the market, $10 to $15 a barrel," said Peter McGuire, managing director of Commodity Warrants Australia. "(There is the) Labour Day holiday on Monday, and the market will be shut. There's a lot of nervousness in the market."

McGuire said oil could hit around $130 over the next week and a half on hurricane worries. Oil was last at that level five weeks ago.

Analysts say U.S. companies could be forced to draw on oil inventories to compensate for disruptions.

U.S. government data showed an unexpected, 100,000 barrel drop in U.S. crude inventories last week, against forecasts of a 1 million barrel rise.

The dollar slipped from a six-month high against the euro on Thursday after comments by European Central Bank officials the previous day scaled back speculation about an ECB rate cut.

Traders were also eyeing an OPEC meeting scheduled for September 9 in Vienna as well as escalating tensions between Russia and the West after U.S. President George W. Bush condemned Russia for recognizing breakaway regions in Georgia.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Wednesday said oil prices were fair, and the nation's energy minister said OPEC should keep output steady or make cuts at its next meeting in September.

Angola: Writer Ondjaki Releases New Book

The novel entitled "Avô Dezanove e o Segredo do Soviético", by the Angolan writer Ndalu de Almeida, was presented on Monday in Luanda, ANGOP witnessed.

The book was released by the Nzila publishing house and has 1,500 copies available for the market, at the price of 1,500 Kwanzas (roughly USD 20).

The book tells of Luanda city in the 1980s, stories from Praia do Bispo neighbourhood, which according to the writer is a work that started as a fable and grew up until becoming a novel with this title.

Ndalu de Almeida was born in 1977, in Luanda, and is graduated in sociology by a Portuguese university. He is experienced in the areas of theatre and painting.

Pulitzer Prize winner named Virginia's poet laureate

Governor Tim Kaine is appointing University of Mary Washington professor Claudia Emerson as Virginia's new poet laureate.

Emerson won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for her book of poetry called "Late Wife." The book uses a collection of handwritten letters to reflect on her failed marriage of 19 years and her blossoming relationship with her second husband.

Kaine announced the appointment on Tuesday. Emerson succeeds Carolyn Kreiter-Foronda, who served in the honorary state post since 2006.

The Chatham native is a graduate of the University of Virginia and earned a master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Young writer self-publishes his work

No matter where he goes, Michael McClanahan is never without his journals. Battered and worn though they are, they are his life.

He admits he’s the kind of writer who writes because he must. Whether stopping in the middle of a conversation or in the middle of a shower if he must, he is constantly filling up the pages of those journals with his small handwriting.

It’s a habit that has helped the 25-year-old deal with an onslaught of health problems that began in childhood. Diagnosed with chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome and scoliosis, as well as chronic back pain from a slipped rod, he has gone through four major back surgeries already in his young life.

“Writing is one big saving grace. It’s how I deal with everything,” he said. “Writing is the ticket to my salvation. It has helped me, more so than even the doctors.”

McClanahan, of Victoria, is now hoping his writing can help others. He recently self-published his first book of poetry, fulfilling a lifelong dream of his to see his name in print.

“I hope people take away a greater appreciation of life and that this book will bring some kind of brightness into their lives,” he said.

Titled “Every Breath Poetic,” the book was published by McClanahan at home through his own press with the help of his family.

Having long wanted to share his writing with the public, it was the impact of the loss of a good friend that made McClanahan finally decide to take matters into his own hands.

“My friend Trevor died in a car wreck and it was the first real death I had experienced. He was such an awesome person, but when I saw that, saw that everything can be taken away in an instant, I decided I was going to get as much of my writing as I could out there,” he said. “You never know when you could be side-swiped and have it all end.”

Although he is just getting into the publishing game, McClanahan added he has big plans for the future, which include starting his own publication company.

Pak poet Ahmed Faraz dies at 77

MUMBAI: The Urdu feminist writer Ismat Chughtai once recalled meeting a young poet in Moscow. "He isn't the usual betel-chewing, kurta-pyjama-clad poet. He is smartly dressed and can dance with the girls," she remarked.

Non-conformist in his views and dress, the Urdu poet Ahmed Faraz, died battling kidney failure at a hospital in Islamabad on Monday. He was 77. A staunch champion of Indo-Pak friendship, Faraz was among the peaceniks who chose human bonding over geographical boundaries. Nothing sums up his post-Partition separation from us better than his own couplet: "Ab ke bichchde hain to shayad kabhi khwabon mein mile, Jis tarah sookhe hue phool kitabon mein mile (After this separation, we may meet only in our dreams, Like wilted flowers within the pages of a book)."

A globe-trotting bard, Faraz touched the hearts of many lovers of poetry with his simple, everyday diction and themes that common man could relate to. " Aur tujhe chahiye kitni mohabbatein Faraz/Maon ne apne bachche ka naam tere naam pe rakh diya (How much love and affection do you crave Faraz?/Mothers have named their children after you)," is how he once affectionately described his following.

"He was known not just for mushairas but as a significant poet of our era. After Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Sahir Ludhianvi, Ahmed Faraz took the Urdu ghazal to new heights," says poet-lyricist Nida Fazli who shared the stage with Faraz at least a dozen times, the last being at Darbhanga in Bihar.

Famous Chinese writer dies at 88
Beijing:Famed Chinese writer Wei Wei, who chronicled the Korean War, died of liver cancer here, the state media reported today.

He was 88.

The largely self-taught writer, best known for reporting from the front lines of the Korean War in the 1950s, died on Sunday.

His masterpiece, "Who Is the Most Lovable", an eulogy of the heroism and revolutionary spirit of the Chinese People s Volunteers serving in the Korean War, has been read by and influenced generations of Chinese people, Xinhua news agency reported.

Born in 1920 in a poor family in Zhengzhou, capital of central Henan Province, Wei joined the Eighth Route Army at the outbreak of the War of Resistance against Japan in 1937 and became a member of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1938.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Lesbian activist Del Martin died on Wednesday, just two months after marrying her partner of 55 years in one of the first legally recognized California same-sex weddings.

Martin, 87, who wed Phyllis Lyon, 83, in San Francisco's City Hall in June, died of natural causes at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center on Wednesday morning, the National Center for Lesbian Rights said.

The same-sex couple also had been the first in California to marry in San Francisco's 2004 "Winter of Love," when Mayor Gavin Newsom opened the door to gay marriage. Those unions were annulled, but an ensuing legal battle ended this summer with court backing of same-sex marriages. A stampede of marriages followed.

Trend-setting California is one of only a few countries and U.S. states to allow same-sex marriage, although state voters in November will decide whether to abolish the right.

"I am devastated, but I take some solace in knowing we were able to enjoy the ultimate rite of love and commitment before she passed," Lyon said in a statement after her wife's death.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – One man appears determined to crash the party at the Playboy Mansion.

Los Angeles police say a Ventura County man rammed his vehicle into the gates at Hugh Hefner's legendary home twice in the past week.

Detectives believe both incidents involve an "ongoing dispute," Lt. John Romero told the Los Angeles Times, without offering details.

Jason Lee, a police spokesman, said no one was injured in either incident.

The unnamed suspect was arrested and released after the first crash last Thursday night, Lee said. He slammed his car into the gates again Tuesday, but fled before police arrived. The gates sustained some damage.

Police did not know if Hefner, the founder of Playboy magazine, or his three girlfriends were at home at the time.

Officials at Playboy's corporate offices in Los Angeles and Chicago could not be reached for comment Wednesday night.

Pope angry over crucified green frog sculpture

ROME (Reuters) - A modern art sculpture portraying a crucified green frog holding a beer mug and an egg that Pope Benedict has condemned as blasphemous may have its days numbered.

The board of the Museion museum in the northern city of Bolzano were meeting on Thursday to choose whether to side with the pope and other opponents of the frog or with proponents who say it should be defended as a work of art.

The wooden sculpture by the late German artist Martin Kippenberger depicts a frog about 1 metre 30 cm (4 feet) high nailed to brown cross and holding a beer mug in one outstretched hand and an egg in another.

Called "Zuerst die Fuesse," (Feet First), it wears a green loin cloth and is nailed through the hands and the feet in the manner of Jesus Christ. Its green tongue hangs out of its mouth.

Kippenberger's work has been shown at the Tate Modern and the Saatchi Gallery in London and at the Venice Biennale, and retrospectives are planned in Los Angeles and New York.

Museum officials in the northern bi-lingual Alto Adige region near the Austrian border said the artist, who died in 1997, considered it a self-portrait illustrating human angst.

It was quite an experience, he wants to go back tomorrow. Anyway, on our way back to the car my son saw another little boy and being the giver of love that he is, he ran up to that little boy and hugged him. His parents smiled and said, "why don't you show him your bag of shredded money!!!" No shite, a bag of what looked to be as real as I could tell, of shredded American money. And I asked where he got it and the Mom said outside the Denver MINT!!! She said they weren't handing it out to everyone..... What the heck is that? I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. Nor if my son hadn't ran and hugged some random child.???

The wooden sculpture by the late German artist Martin Kippenberger depicts a frog about 1 metre 30 cm (4 feet) high nailed to brown cross and holding a beer mug in one outstretched hand and an egg in another. Called "Zuerst die Fuesse," (Feet First), it wears a green loin cloth and is nailed through the hands and the feet in the manner of Jesus Christ. Its green tongue hangs out of its mouth. Kippenberger's work has been shown at the Tate Modern and the Saatchi Gallery in London and at the Venice Biennale, and retrospectives are planned in Los Angeles and New York. Crude for October delivery rose 93 cents to $119.08 a barrel by 0656 GMT, after earlier hitting an intraday high of $119.25 and chalking a gain of $3.56 over the past three sessions. London Brent crude was up $1.03 cents at $117.25 a barrel. Gustav is expected to hit the U.S. Gulf Coast around Monday as the first major hurricane to threaten U.S. energy installations there since Katrina and Rita in 2005, and about 85 percent of U.S. offshore oil and gas production could be in its path. AccuWeather said Gustav could strengthen into a Category 4 or 5 storm over the Gulf -- home to a quarter of U.S. crude oil production and 15 percent of the nation's natural gas output. Shell Oil Co, the U.S. Gulf of Mexico's largest producer, said its oil production would be affected as early as Thursday as it evacuated all workers from offshore operations. Gustav could shut down 85 percent of U.S. production platforms in the Gulf, private forecaster Planalytics said. Battered and worn though they are, they are his life. He admits he’s the kind of writer who writes because he must. Whether stopping in the middle of a conversation or in the middle of a shower if he must, he is constantly filling up the pages of those journals with his small handwriting. It’s a habit that has helped the 25-year-old deal with an onslaught of health problems that began in childhood. Diagnosed with chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome and scoliosis, as well as chronic back pain from a slipped rod, he has gone through four major back surgeries already in his young life. “Writing is one big saving grace. It’s how I deal with everything,” he said. “Writing is the ticket to my salvation. It has helped me, more so than even the doctors.” McClanahan, of Victoria, is now hoping his writing can help others. He recently self-published his first book of poetry, fulfilling a lifelong dream of his to see his name in print. “I hope people take away a greater appreciation of life and that this book will bring some kind of brightness into their lives,” he said. Titled “Every Breath Poetic,” the book was published by McClanahan at home through his own press with the help of his family. Having long wanted to share his writing with the public, it was the impact of the loss of a good friend that made McClanahan finally decide to take matters into his own hands. “My friend Trevor died in a car wreck and it was the first real death I had experienced. He was such an awesome person, but when I saw that, saw that everything can be taken away in an instant, I decided I was going to get as much of my writing as I could out there,” he said. “You never know when you could be side-swiped and have it all end.” Although he is just getting into the publishing game, McClanahan added he has big plans for the future, which include starting his own publication company.
