POPE Benedict XVI has accused the media
and entertainment industries
of harming society
with trivial portrayals of sexuality
that he said were partly to blame for
social ills such as prostitution
and child abuse.

The Pope made the comments during an address
to bishops from Thailand, who he said were
particularly concerned about the trafficking
of women and children as well as prostitution.

"Undoubtedly poverty is a factor
underlying these phenomena,"
the German-born pontiff said.

"But there is a further aspect
which must be acknowledged ...
I am speaking of the trivialisation of sexuality

Alien threat
to truffle delicacy

The volume of truffles harvested
has diminished greatly

One of the world's most prized
culinary delicacies,
the famous Perigord black truffle,
could soon be off the menu.

Scientists fear it will be wiped out
by an invading Chinese truffle
they have discovered
growing in European soils.

They tell the New Phytologist journal that the incomer
is a particularly aggressive and fast-growing species.

The Perigord black truffle is one of the most highly regarded truffles,
fetching around 600 to 800 euros per kg this season.


"We dreaded it and it has happened."

"It is the most famous and appreciated among the black truffles,
and is the most important truffle in French cuisine,"
says Claude Murat, a fungus expert based at the
University of Torino, Italy.

Only Piedmont white truffles fetch higher prices.

Yet, its very existence is now threatened by the Chinese black truffle,
a close relative that looks similar, but has almost no taste at all.

A team led by Murat has discovered this alien species
growing on a plantation in Italy, meaning it is now
growing in the wild in Europe.

"We dreaded it and it has happened," the scientists warn
in their research paper.
The concern is that the Chinese invader
will out-compete its revered European relative.

Worse, it may even be able to interbreed
with the Perigord black truffle,
potentially replacing it altogether with a hybrid.

'Ecological rival'

True truffles are fungi that belong to the genus Tuber,
and they live symbiotically with the roots of host trees.
Perigord black and Piedmont white truffles
not only have exquisite colour, taste and odour,
but are considered to be powerful aphrodisiacs.

"Black gold":
Truffles fetch high prices at market

Over the past century, harvests of the Perigord,
scientifically known as Tuber melanosporum,
have declined greatly, with annual sales falling from
over 1,500 tonnes in 1870 to less than 100 tonnes today.

This has created a gap in the market,
which since the mid-1990s
has increasingly been filled by sales of
the inferior Chinese black truffle, known as Tuber indicum.

European connoisseurs are concerned because
while imports of the Chinese black truffle are sometimes
legitimately labelled as T. indicum, often they are not,
with Chinese truffles being illegally passed off as Perigords.

Now it seems that the two truffles will become
ecological,
as well as commercial, competitors.

"The owner of the Italian plantation contacted us in 2006,"
says Murat.

Genetic avenue

He had planted hazel and hornbeam tree seedlings
that he thought were inoculated with the Perigord truffle fungus,
"but after 10 years hadn't harvested a truffle".

A survey by Murat's team revealed both Perigord and Chinese truffles
in the root tips of the plants, and also in the soil.

"It's the first evidence that T. indicum has been used
to inoculate seedlings implanted in Europe,
and that this species can spread in European ecosystems," he says.

The future of the Perigord black truffle was already in danger
as a result of falling harvests. While the team cannot yet be sure
that the Chinese black truffle will supplant the Perigord in the wild,
"it certainly represents a future danger", says Murat.

Lab tests show it grows faster, has a higher genetic diversity
and can respond better to different ecosystems and to climate change.
And when a root is inoculated with both species, the Chinese black truffle
is able to replace its rival.

In a bid to avoid that, Murat's team is now studying the genome
of the Perigord black truffle.

"We hope this important project will allow us to
preserve this delicious product," he says.

Australia's truffling success

They are synonymous with
French haute cuisine,
but the cultivation
of truffles in Australia
has proved such a success
that the first batch
has been exported abroad.

This has brought a touch of Provence to upland regions of
south-eastern Australia,
where conditions most closely resemble those of Europe's
best-known truffle-growing area.

It is a perfect winter's day and ideal for a truffle hunt.

The sun is shining, the sky is a deep blue
and the hazel and oak trees are rustling gently in the breeze.

But this is not Provence or Perigord.
Instead I am in the Southern Highlands of
New South Wales, just two hours' drive from Sydney.

The hills and ridges are covered not with deciduous forest
but with gum trees and wattle bushes.

Not content with taking on the French
at making wine,
Australians are now getting into another
hallowed Gallic tradition -
truffle cultivation.

'Black diamonds'

The first Australian truffle farm was established in Tasmania
and the first "black diamond", as the French call them,
was triumphantly plucked from the ground in 1999.

Since then around 50 truffle plantations have been established
in Tasmania, New South Wales and Victoria.

Russians snap up
Australian luxury

Australia's sun-drenched Gold Coast with its high rises,
endless beaches and tranquil inland waterways
is a magnet for just about anyone with a taste
and budget for the good life.

The surfer lifestyle attracts people
from all over the world

Tourists, retirees and investors –
not to mention surfers -
have long flocked to this ritzy coastal strip
south of Brisbane, where the climate is so mild
summer never seems to end.

Hardly surprising, then, that record numbers of
cashed up Russians are buying prized real estate
in one of Australia's fastest growing regions.

Flush with wealth from oil and mining,
Russian entrepreneurs are snapping up
multi-million dollar waterfront mansions
and luxury penthouses in Surfers Paradise
and surrounding districts.

Stable market

This is a place that refuses to stand still.

The daytime's cheery preoccupation with shopping and sunbathing
is replaced after dark by the inviting hum of al fresco dining and
swanky bars.

Cranes dominate parts of the cloudless skyline
and developers are busy reshaping the landscape.

Traditionally, overseas interest in
this sub-tropical tourist hub
has been dominated by buyers from
New Zealand, Britain, Japan and China.

But these days, Russian involvement in
the glamorous Gold Coast is soaring.
They have become its biggest foreign investors.

But in 2006-07, Russians bought
$34m (17m) worth of real estate,
a threefold increase on the previous year.

"They know they are buying into
a politically stable market place,"
explains Paul Barratt from
property company DTZ Australia.

Developers arrive

It is not the overall amount that has the Gold Coast buzzing,
though, but rather the spectacular rise in their purchasing power.

After all, the level of Russian investment
in the early 2000s was negligible.

"We are seeing a huge increase
in the money that they are spending,"
says Rob Sainsbury, director of residential sales
at Colliers International Gold Coast.

"Developers are now starting
to come here from Russia as well."

They are attracted by the solid returns of recent years
and the expectation that their investments
will grow in the future, although rising interest rates
have dampened the market nationally.

Russian community is tight knit.

There are few overt displays of wealth
and this group of Eastern Europeans
has quietly blended into the area's
rich multicultural mix.

"First of all, it is a real nice place for holidays
and some Russians choose to live here,"
says Moscow-born estate agent Elena Shakirova,
who specialises in properties in Runaway Bay
north of Surfers Paradise.

"They can move their business
from Russia to Australia.

"Most of them are looking for waterfront homes,
new penthouses, luxury apartments, and
some of them
are just looking to buy a block of land so they can
build a house that they really want."

Wealthy Russians

Then, of course, there are the ultimate accessories
for a stunning waterside home in an area that bills itself
as "Australia's favourite playground".

"One of our dealers is actively
in conversation with a couple of Russians,"
says Denby Browning from Gold Coast company
Riviera,
Australia's biggest luxury boat builder.

"We've got some superb boats
which would ideally suit their lifestyle."

Large amounts of Russian wealth are being spent abroad -
not only in Australia but in
the United Kingdom, Cyprus, Spain and Israel too.

Associate professor Steven Fortescue from the
University of New South Wales says Russian entrepreneurs
are looking to buy a safe place in the sun.

"There are lots of people in Russia that neither you nor I
would have ever heard of,
but they have made quite a lot of money," he says.

"They won't necessarily be in resources,
but in retail and wholesale trade.

"They might not be in the billionaires' class,
but they have got enough to buy real estate abroad.
They have got the money to have a house
somewhere that is nice and pleasant, so why not?"

But at the bustling Harbour City retail park opinion
among the locals about the Russian influx is mixed.

"I would prefer that Australians buy up our own land
rather than have too much foreign investment,"
says Graham Wallace,
who has recently retired to the Gold Coast.

Shantelle Jones, a life coach, has a more relaxed approach
to the influx of Russian dollars.

"I am sure our government will do its best to make sure
that our economic interests are protected," she says.

Australia has largely been insulated
from the global credit squeeze
by its booming minerals sector.

There are signs the economy is slowing but
this faraway continent
is likely to remain
a safe bolt hole for
international investors.
