The former Victorian Labor premier
says his program would help meet
Australia's skills shortage,
but would also export skills back
to developing countries of the region,
including East Timor,
Papua New Guinea and Fiji,
The Australian reports.

Mr Bracks -
who since his departure from politics in July last year
has taken up corporate consultancies and board positions,
is acting pro bono
as an adviser to
the East Timor Government
and is conducting a review
of motor industry tariffs -
made his comments at the
Australian Davos Connection
Future Summit in Sydney,
which is sponsored by
The Australian.

But the participants at the summit,
mainly business, political and academic leaders,
were deeply divided on the topic.

A poll conducted by Roy Morgan Research found that
of the 125 summit participants who responded to a questionnaire,
45 per cent would support increasing the annual intake
of unskilled migrants by 25,000 a year for five years.

But 30 per cent were against such an increase
and 25 per cent were undecided.

Immigration emerged as one of the most hotly debated issues
at the first full day of the Sydney summit, which continues today.

Mr Bracks told the summit
the time was again right
for a bold expansion
of skilled and unskilled immigration,
comparing it to the economic
and social enrichment Australia enjoyed
from the "populate or perish"
post-war immigration of the 1950s.

But he proposed a specific new category of medium-term migrant:
one from the Asia-Pacific region who would either bring existing skills
and hone them in Australia, or acquire them over one to three years.

After that time,
the migrant would be expected to return
to their native country to apply those skills to local development.

But they would from there have the option to apply to return
to take up permanent residency in Australia
and be assessed along with all other prospective migrants.

FORTY-SEVEN illegal migrants
have died of starvation and cold
after the engine of the rickety boat
transporting them from Libya to Italy
broke down,
a Tunisian newspaper has reported.

Sixteeen other migrants, who survived the tragedy,
dumped the 47 bodies in the Mediterranean sea
in a bid to prevent the boat from sinking,
the weekly Assabah el Ousboue said today,
quoting security officials who had been briefed by survivors.

The wind pushed the damaged boat towards Tunisia's shore
where coastguard members rescued the 16 would-be migrants, it said.

The migrants left the coastal Libyan city of Zawara last week.

Three corpses, believed to be those of the dead migrants,
washed up near the coast village of Bekalta,
some 250km southeast of Tunis, the newspaper said.

Tunis government officials were not immediately available for comment.

Last year, nearly 20,000 migrants
arrived in Italy by boat from North Africa.

Well, how does the BBC/Fox/whatever media do this? I mean, the "coded" message from the pictures they put on their websites? Does this mean that all of the journalists or whoever takes the pictures are behind this? (I'm not saying that you people are liars or making things up; I'm asking cause I'm "new" at all this stuff, so I'm curious, that's all..)

where one butcher sells a delicacy called "mock chicken".
It's mince squished into the shape of a drumstick

If it was up to celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay,
Bourke's gourmands would be eating mock chicken
all the time, sourced from local mincemongers.

Ramsay has lately outed himself as a local food fanatic,
demanding that laws be passed in the UK
to prohibit foreign food imports.

"I don't want to see asparagus in the middle of December.
I don't want to see strawberries from Kenya in
the middle of March. I want to see it home grown,"

"There should be stringent laws."

Xenofoodic Ramsay is a strange one to be
advocating protectionism.
