AUSTRALIAN icon Vegemite
is set to be honoured
with a museum at Docklands.

The centre will feature a
striking V-shaped entrance
painted in the familiar
red and yellow jar colours.

Virtually a shrine to our national food spread,
it will be a major attraction
on the piazza at Waterfront City.

It will include an interactive exhibition
and historic relics like original jars,
the famous Happy Little Vegemites
ad campaign from the 1950s,
recipes and spin-off products.

Visitors will be able to sample Vegemite in a cafe.

Comedian Dave Hughes said yesterday:
"If there's one thing that all Australians know,
it's Vegemite.
I'm sure it will be a roaring success."

Vegemite has been part of the nation's food culture
since the early 1920s when invented by
Melbourne chemist Cyril Callister
for the Fred Walker Company.

It was slow to take off at first,
but by World War II it was a staple in most homes.

Aussie troops overseas started a tradition
by depending on Vegemite for a taste of home.

Manufacturer Kraft has collected hundreds of original jars
after a nationwide recovery campaign in 1990.

An amber-coloured glass jar from 1923,
the first year of public sale,
has been displayed in
Sydney's Powerhouse Museum.

A Kraft spokesman said the Docklands museum
was still speculative.
"It's subject to internal and external evaluations,"
he said.

However, the Herald Sun believes the project
has been signed off and the concept will be
officially launched early next year.

The museum will be
a major drawcard for
Docklands' Waterfront City,
which features the
Southern Star Observation Wheel,
due to open next week.

The Walk of Stars,
based on Hollywood's Walk of Fame,
pays tribute to legendary Australian entertainers.

Also planned for the precinct
is the city's first boutique marina hotel.
