Rocker, writers get British honors

LONDON - Fantasy author Terry Pratchett has carved out a career as a best-selling author with tales of wizards and sorcerers. Now he has been made a real-life knight, honored alongside Olympic athletes and rock singer Robert Plant in Queen Elizabeth II's New Year honors list.

The British writer, who is known for his "Discworld" series of novels and has sold more than 55 million books worldwide, will be given a knighthood today. Pratchett, who won a lesser honor in 1998, announced last year that he has early onset Alzheimer's, a rare form of the disease.

"There are times when phrases such as 'totally astonished' just don't do the job," said Pratchett, 60. "I am of course delighted and honored and - needless to say - flabbergasted."

Plant, a Grammy-winning singer and the front man of heavy metal pioneers Led Zeppelin, was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, or CBE, in the annual list.

Scottish cyclist Chris Hoy, who became in 2008 the first Briton in more than 100 years to claim three gold medals in a single Olympics, was knighted. He was one of many athletes on this year's list, reflecting Britain's strong performance in Beijing.

Hoy's mother, Carol Hoy, a nurse who specializes in treating patients with sleep deprivation and respiratory problems, has been made a Member of the Order of the British Empire, or MBE.

She was one of hundreds of ordinary Britons nominated by their communities for honors. Britain's Cabinet Office said it was the fist time a mother and son have been honored in the same list.

Lewis Hamilton, the youngest Formula One champion ever, was awarded an MBE.

And Eleanor Simmonds, a 14-year-old swimmer who won two gold medals at the 2008 Paralympic Games, was also given an MBE, becoming the youngest recipient of a British honor. No one under 18 has ever won one before, the Cabinet Office said.

Historian David Cannadine, known for his 1996 book "The Decline and Fall of the British Aristocracy," was honored with a knighthood. Cannadine, formerly the director of Britain's Institute of Historical Research, is also known for "Mellon: An American Life," his biography of the US Treasury secretary Andrew W. Mellon.

The British Treasury's most senior civil servant, Nick Macpherson, has been knighted for his "extraordinary work in response to the crisis in the financial services industry," the Cabinet Office said in a statement.

Others honored included actor Michael Sheen, who portrayed Prime Minister Tony Blair in the film "The Queen," and journalist David Frost in both the stage and film versions of "Frost/Nixon," a dramatization of Frost's interviews with Richard Nixon in 1977.

Though the honors are bestowed by the queen, the recipients are selected by committees of civil servants from nominations made by the government and the public.

Luke 23:30
Then they will begin to tell the mountains,'Fall on us!'
and tell the hills,'Cover us.'

27; And there followed him a great company of people, and of women,
which also bewailed and lamented him.

28; But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem,
weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.

29; For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say,
Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare,
and the paps which never gave suck.

30; Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.

31; For if they do these things in a green tree,
what shall be done in the dry?

Avalanche survivor
faced 4.5m snow wall

From correspondents in
Montreal

Agence France-Presse

January 01, 2009 10:33am

Avalanche survivor Jeff Adams

Survivor ...
Mr Adams
is supported by his wife and father / AP

* Eight killed in Rocky Mountains avalanche
* Survivor speaks for first time
* Says it was "gut-wrenching" to leave friends

ONE of three survivors of an avalanche in western Canada
says he is haunted by the "gut-wrenching decision"
they made to leave eight friends behind, buried in the snow,
while they went for help.

Jeff Adams, 29, was among 11 snowmobilers
riding in the Canadian Rocky Mountains in British Columbia
when an avalanche buried them alive.

Mr Adams and two friends freed themselves and got help,
but not in time to save the others.

All eight bodies have since been recovered.

In the first public statement by any of the three survivors since the tragedy, Mr Adams explained there had been two avalanches.

He said he and another initial survivor
were digging out a third friend
when four other snowmobilers arrived to help.

"At approximately 2.05 pm we heard a crack and that's when
the second slide hit us, burying all 11 of us," he said.

He said the second avalanche, according to experts,
"hit us at 150km/h plus ... the wall of snow
was probably at least 4.5 metres high".

Trapped near the surface, Mr Adams said he managed to break out just as he was choking, and then helped dig out another of his friends.

Together, he said, they were digging out a third man when they heard the crack of another avalanche and abandoned their mate to run for their lives.

"And as we were running away from James he was saying, 'Don't leave me here, don't leave me here,' and we kept saying, 'we're sorry'. The slide never hit us ... and we went back in and finally got James out."

The three then faced a difficult choice of staying to search for their other friends, some of whom were buried deep in the snow, or leaving to seek help.

"And that's when we made the decision that it was unsafe to go in there, and that's when we had to make the gut-wrenching decision to leave our eight friends and start walking off the mountain.

"It's hard," he said, "I replay it in my head all the time whether it was the right decision or not. All three of us talked it through and decided the best bet was to get out of the area and go for help."
He said it was a comfort to know all the families of their dead friends supported their decision to leave.

"It was a hard one to leave eight guys up there," he said.

All of the friends were locals, were experienced snowmobilers and had appropriate gear, including shovels and probes, Mr Adams said.

THE state's greediest pubs are raking in a staggering $1.1 billion from poker machines each year, with each machine in Western Sydney taking almost four times the annual average wage.

The revelations have prompted calls for access to pokies to be slashed and a reduction in the number of machines in lower socio-economic areas.

Documents reveal the $1.1 billion was collected by the top 500 hotels - more than two-thirds of the total pub poker machine revenue statewide, equating to a $200 loss by every adult,

some weird story demonizing ..ducks etc..

i hate to say it but its just gunna be one big genocide in the usa... thats it. PERIOD. if i can play my guitar to stop it i will try for a time

but i don't think i will be able to do that nor do i want to do that.. i hate the stage, im like anti rock star.. i just wanted to make music to god, hard to do in this world never mind people won't let you speak about it - i'l just find that big red button push it and get the hell outa here before all hell breaks loose

think i'll skip the whole rock star thing... go to different towns walk around do some good make my way over to the west coast and get to that big red button open door in the sky and jump through it before they nail me to the ground. gata fly away, dove will just drop the rose, --the great escape last picture show not time to know me just go -don't want that door to hit me in the ass either.

"and the love of many grew cold"
but then it thawed and everything was great again, for a short while, then it all went to hell again.. ah the up and down valley high mountain tops of the cycle of insanity here on the ground. the world isn't going to stop until it gets its biggest fear. One World Government... wait a minute we already got that... we just gata get the people to accept it and get a tat or chip ---yeah...thats it...let's "work together" ..."join us" ... "yes we can" ...(falls asleep)
