SAN DIEGO – An Australian tourist who was beaten unconscious and tossed into a fire in Ocean Beach last month is coming out of a coma, and San Diego police yesterday identified two suspects in the attack. Frank Montoya, 46, and Damian Maple, 21, both transients, are wanted on charges of attempted homicide, Detective Dan Roman said.

Robert Schneider, 26, suffered severe burns on his legs and body, a fractured skull, a broken hand and deep facial cuts in the Feb. 27 attack. Schneider has been in a medically induced coma and has undergone several skin grafts at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest.

“If they are the right people, they need to stand and account for what they have done,” Robert's father, Peter Schneider, said last night.

Peter Schneider and his wife, Judy, flew from Adelaide, Australia, to be with their son.

Robert Schneider was taken off a ventilator earlier this week and is slowly waking.

“He's healing beautifully,” Peter Schneider said. “There were many days we would just stand there and wonder and hold his hand.”

He said the couple have been overwhelmed with kindness from strangers, church members and hospital employees during their stay at a low-cost, hospital-run home for foreign families of long-term patients.

“There are more good people in San Diego than bad,” Peter Schneider said.

Robert Schneider is an electrician who had been traveling the world since last May. He had come to San Diego for a surfboard so he could join new friends on a surfing trek in Mexico.

The assault occurred about 5:20 a.m. as the three men were drinking with two other men at a fire ring near Abbott Street. Roman said an argument broke out and Montoya and Maple beat Schneider with a skateboard and threw him in the fire.

One of the other men pulled Schneider from the flames and the other ran for help.

Montoya and Maple “used to hang out in Ocean Beach, but I'm not sure where they are now,” Roman said. “They're pretty good at hitchhiking and they know how to get around.”

Roman said Maple is from San Diego and may have family in Arizona, and Montoya has ties to Northern California and Colorado.

Montoya is Latino, 5 feet 5 inches tall, 160 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. Maple is white, 6 feet 2 inches tall, 185 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.

Anyone with information about Montoya or Maple is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-TIPS. Tipsters may be eligible for a $1,000 reward.
