Police say two students were struck with a single bullet when the gun, which was hidden in a backpack, apparently went off by accident. Doctors said a single bullet went through the neck of a 15-year old boy before hitting a female student in the head. The boy's injuries were not life threatening. The 15-year old girl is in critical condition after undergoing brain surgery. According to Dr. James Ausman of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, the girl was struck by the bullet on the left side of the head near her temple. The bullet caused a skull fracture and exited the left side of her head, but did not enter the brain. The impact of the bullet caused a skull fracture and a brain contusion. She sustained a "fairly significant" blood clot, according to Ausman. She was rushed into surgery within 30 minutes of the shooting and doctors successfully removed the blood clot. Her brain swelling was expected to continue for 48 hours. The girl was recovering from surgery and remained intubated. According to trauma surgeon Dr. Scott Bricker, the girl was unconscious when she arrived at the hospital. She exhibited signs of significant brain injury. Deputy Chief Patrick Gannon says the 17-year old student who brought the gun to school said he was sorry after it went off, and a teacher in the classroom said it appeared to be an accident. He is expected to be charged as a juvenile with assault with a deadly weapon. Friends say this was not the first time the teen brought a weapon to school. Andrea Tibbs, who described herself as a "good friend" of the student, said that he started bringing the gun to campus to protect himself after he had been in a fight outside of school –- an incident, she said, that made him fear for his safety, according to the L.A. Times. In fact, the Compton teen is on criminal probation for a fight on a school campus. It is not know whether the fight occurred at Gardena High, where the teen is a relatively new student, or on another campus. Friends and classmates describe the student as a friendly and respectful. "He was a sweetheart, always smiling and hugging people," classmate Para Ross said. Ross, who is in the 11th grade, and others said that the student carried the gun for protection.
