I hope you've checked your lead coffin for holes. The 6 protons; 6 neutrons; 6 electrons, dog 'n' pony show, is about to draw to a close.

Dammed if you do, dammed if you don't.

This is an extremely serious topic for me.

My husband has survived melanoma... and while we are both aware that sunscreen may be harmful, not using sunscreen may be equally foolish with fatal results.

We've spent a lot of time researching the "safest" sunblock to use, but still it is putting chemicals on your skin (the body's largest organ which will absorb all the nasty shit into one's system).

What I am wondering is... does SUN EXPOSURE cause Melanoma??? Everything I've heard/read says yes, it does. But apparently sunblock causes cancer too. WTF?

Right now, he uses sunscreen. And will continue to do so I guess...

We're at a loss for the best thing to do. And yes, he covers up as much as possible, and stays out of the sun during peak hours as best as possible.

If anyone has any more info... either on the connection between the sun and melanoma -- or information about sunscreen... it would be much appreciate. thanks.

I have no idea what you're on about. For anyone still not convinced here was a new article I saw in a tabloid today. It's a bit fearful but this has been repeated a lot of times already.

I haven't ever seen any credible evidence for the 'sunscreen causes cancer' line. The suggestion I heard is that people who put on sunscreen sometimes think it renders them immune to any harm from sunlight, so they stay out in the sun indefinitely when they should be limiting their exposure to a few hours at a time (especially when on holiday in a climate much more sunny than their own).

EDIT: what disorder2k8 said.

You do fella, the element carbon has 6 protons, 6 neutrons and 6 electrons. You aptly described it yourself saying "we'd be carbon putty"

Sunscreen use has been the subject of numerous epidemiological studies. If sunscreen penetrates the skin, it promotes indirect DNA damage, which we are told is the cause of the most lethal form of skin cancer - Malignant melanoma.

I recommend nobody sunbathe at all until at least another year. The peak should be starting to fall off by then.

This is not a normal sun right now. Its not yellow or orange like it should be. Its so bright it almost killed my camera

I don't now how people expect a bit of cream to stop them burning. I am fair skinned, I haven't used sunscreen for years and I haven't been burnt for years, despite spending whole days in the summer at the kids footy tournaments. Something must be wrong with it.

Interesting. At least 90% of people don't use sunscreen.

Often, by the age of 35 or 40, their skin looks like crispy chicken skin.

There needs to be a series of longitudinal studies done which track users and non-users to determine long term outcomes.

Also, most people seem not to understand how sunscreen works.

You should apply it at least 15 min. preferably 30 min. before you go outdoors. Then, it is optimally effective for an hour and a half.

I suspect that very few people using sunscreen are aware of when to apply, or how long it's effective. Add to that the overwhelming numbers who never use sunscreen at all, and that likely accounts for 99+ of all cases.

There are many fruits & some vegetables that can safeguard your skin from the damaging UV rays of the sun, sunscreen is pointless (as is laying in the sun for 8 hours).

Google them up.

Isn't that AOL report more about Vitamin A used in sun screens accelerating cancer rather than sun screens causing it.

Whether sun screens are effective is the question but that report doesn't say they cause cancer.
