Default The ways in which people lie to themselves

I had a job interview last week.
I didn't get it, and unless it was given to someone who's been unemployed longer than I have, I think that's immoral. I easily had the experience and skills etc.

Anyway, one of the questions was about why I'd moved onto new jobs in the past. I was answering along the lines of wanting career development, new experiences blah blah. But let's face it, I was lying because really people will mainly change jobs to get more money. And people often kid themselves that they are working for reasons other than to accumulate money.

The actual feedback I got was that effectively I didn't sell myself very well. Well, I have a new found respect for prostitutes, at least they don't lie to themselves about what and why they do what they do.

What other ways do people commonly lie to themselves?

A) Believing that yoga or meditation is 'the answer'
B) Believing that if they do an establishment job, like lawyer/journalist, that they will be spared and there will be no consequences for their amorality
C) Believing they are enlightened, but still holding onto the idea that nationalism is evil

That adhering to anything deemed as rational or scientific without questioning it equates to being of right mind.

My whole life has been like this, right from leaving school, I started with 4 other guys in a store. This one guy crawled around and got the good jobs, and from then on I decided I am never crawling up any ones arse to get ahead, and I never have.
I have seen people do amazing things to get ahead in life, bullshit their way on women, jobs, and conversation with these types is soul destroying.

Well done on holding on to your soul.

Another thing is when a human checks if another human is alive, i.e. when they ask "how are you?".
And on top of that you might auto-blurt "fine, thanks" which is pretty much a lie most of the time. "Concerned about my liberties being eroded second-by-second" might be a good new default.

They tell themselves that they're honest to themselves.

Men lie to themselves when they see a balding head in the mirror, and strape several strands of remaining hair over the top of the head, thus creating a comb-over.

They convince themselves they have a full head of hair.

Here in Thailand, they ask instead of 'how are you', 'where you go?'
I never know how to reply, lol, not understanding if they mean where have you been or where are you going and I'm pretty sure this is an expression meaning neither, having never met any local who understands the nuances of the english language to find out. lol

Questions like this, I'm always tempted to say, 'its none of your fucking business' or 'If I told you, I'd have to kill you', because in any culture there are non-questions like these. A phoney smile works

Do I lie to myself?...daily, but since I'm an ace human lie detector, it doesn't get me far

Argh, Americans ask "how are you" when they just mean "hello". It needed some getting used to when confronted with such a situation. I got the feelings I should answer the question, but it's not really a question. You're just supposed to answer "good" and be done with it. In Finland we just say "hello" and not ask questions that aren't really questions. At least Germany is the same.

Haha. How lacking in self-awareness you are.

A) You believe in reptilians
B) You believe nationalism is evil

I take it your course of action in the future will be to do:

A) Nothing
B) Until the shit hits the fan, then you'll blame 'Nazis' - presumably helping to lock away people with their wrong views

Some people lie to themselves when they swap their identity to become a diluted version of their heroes.

I think that anyone who projects their hate onto someone/thing/group are lying to themselves. Like fat people who always go on about other people being fat. Poor people who insult the poverty of others. Homophobic people who are more often than not gay themselves. 'Simple' people that like to point out the 'wrongness' or 'idiocy' of others.

If you're happy with yourself, you don't really care what other people do unless it directly affects you. But carrying it around and attacking others, that makes me think, "hhmmm, why do you care so much?"
