The life form known as the 'Mothman' has been around for so long it is not really even known. Natives spoke of it and similar beings recording them on rock walls and pictographs in various places and even offerings to these creatures. The Mothman is said to be sinister but there is little to back this up. I grew up in West Virginia not far from the area of this legend. Having been through the town, met the people and sensed the area I sensed nothing evil but just the opposite. This being is ancient and the sightings were warnings because it knew the bridge was going to collapse. People say it is evil and scary but it is their own fear and reactive judgments that record the events this way. It is not accurate because the being known as the Mothman has not hurt anyone. It would be just as strong an argument to say the Mothman was trying to scare people off the highway to save them than to say he was trying to scare them to the bridge to their deaths. The truth is they were going to cross the bridge anyway. What they should have done and what I'm sure the Mothman hoped they would do was stop and go no further but they didn't get the message, crossed the bridge and most of them died. The Piasa bird is similar in legend to the Mothman and goes back into the Mississippi River valley

According to A Field Guide to Demons book it also makes a connection to this being the mothman.

Mothman is either an alien being or some creature from montauk. Demons do not exist.
