You DO NOT have to have a smart meter! Click on Q11 : Do I have to have a smart meter? at the link above. A 11 "Smart meters will be rolled out as standard across the country by 2019. But it will not be a legal obligation on individuals to have one. The roll-out of smart meters is an important national modernisation programme. This will bring big benefits to consumers and the nation. We expect consumers to welcome the benefits smart meters will bring. (Bit of a shock then, that lots of people don't want them, isn't it?) We aim for all homes to have smart meters by 2019. Energy companies will be required to install smart meters and take all reasonable steps to reach everyone. However, we do not expect energy companies to take legal action to fit a smart meter if they cannot get the householder’s co-operation." My stated view is that if they try to fit a smart meter to my house, they can remove all of their property from my house and land. This includes wires that take electricity to other houses from connections on my house. If they don't remove their equipment - I will, and leave it at the gate on the verge/roadside - they can collect it at their leisure. They will then have to make other arrangements to supply other houses.
