Default Anti-war Campaigner Roy Scheider Dies

Quote:
US actor Roy Scheider, best known for playing the police chief in the Jaws movies, has died at the age of 75.
As well as starring in the first two shark thrillers, Scheider received two Oscar nominations during his career.

He was up for best supporting actor for The French Connection in 1972 and best actor for 1979's All That Jazz.

He died in hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. He had been treated there for multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cell, for the past two years.

Scheider's Jaws co-star Richard Dreyfuss said: "He was a wonderful guy. He was what I call a knockaround actor.

Quote:
Scheider and friends dressed in all black and carried white coffins bearing anti-war slogans, led by a veiled woman cradling a folded American flag. Then someone played “Taps” while they lay down “dead” beside their caskets, causing a 45-minute traffic jam.

“This war is insane,” Scheider told the Southampton Press about his actions. “Bush is doing everything he can to make you look unpatriotic if you disagree with him. This is fear-mongering. Now I am really afraid of terrorism. I wasn’t before [Bush’s address].”

Sag Harbor resident Dan Steiger, who organized the protest, was more vocal. “We do not want to bury Iraqi and American youth. We want to bury the cynicism, racism, fear and attempts at world empire on the part of this U.S. administration.”

This is a sad day for me because he was one of my favourite actors, not to mention an anti-war campaigner

That is sad... I admittedly wasn't a fan of what it was that made his fame [Jaws really], but I did love SeaQuest DSV [SeaQuest 2032]. and he actually used his fame for good. R.I.P. Roy Scheider.

Yeah, bless him. He was one of my favourite actors. I thought he was great in Jaws, Seaquest and Romeo is Burning. I'm glad he braved the new McCarthyism in the US and stood up for his beliefs.

RIP Roy.

My opinion, his masterpiece was "Marathon Man" with Dustin Hoffman and Lawrence Olivier. It's a classic thriller, well worth the view. They don't make them like that anymore.

"We're going to need a bigger boat!"

What a classic line! But it's the look on his face in that scene which I'#ll never forget.

No they certainly do not make them like that anymore. Marathan Man is my favourite tool. I agree Roy Scheider, Dustin Hoffman and off course Lawrence Olivier were great in that.

Jaws was an unreal film and a classic. Most people like to ridicule it and talk about the rubber shark. But back then there was no cgi industry

Like it or not but Jaws is stored somewhere in a safe dark place inside your brain, dont believe me?, then whats the first thing you think of when jump in the sea?

Classic line from Roy.

"why dont you come down here and chum some of this shit" and "we are going to need a bigger boat"

He was one of my faves, thanks to Jaws I am scared of going in the sea and as I lived right on the seafront at the time it was worse!!

It is a shame he has gone, another good man leaves this conciousness.

RIP Roy
