6.7 magnitude earthquake hits off Mauritius

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Seismologists say a strong 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck north of the Indian Ocean islands of Mauritius.

The U.S. Geological Service said the earthquake early Thursday was centered about 250 miles north of the small Rodrigues island at a depth of about 6 miles.

There were no immediate reports of damages or injuries. The Mauritian weather department said no tsunami warning was issued.

Mauritius' resort islands with their popular beaches lie about 1,500 miles off southeast Africa's coast.

Strong Quake Rocks Waters off Indonesia; 1 Killed

By FAKHRURRADZIE GADE Associated Press
BANDA ACEH, Indonesia July 25, 2012 (AP)

A powerful earthquake jolted western Indonesia early Wednesday, killing a man and sending panicked residents fleeing from homes in towns and villages across Sumatra island's northern tip. No tsunami was generated.

The magnitude 6.4 quake hit about 7:30 a.m. (0030 GMT) and was centered 28 kilometers (17 miles) northwest of Aceh province's Sinabang town at a depth of 45 kilometers (28 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho from the National Disaster Management Agency said a 70-year-old man who was suffering from hypertension died as he fled in panic and fell down, but there were no other casualties reported.

Twenty buildings were damaged, including mosques, public health centers, schools and local government offices, the agency said.

Suharjono, from Indonesia's meteorology and geophysics agency, said the earthquake had no potential to generate a tsunami. He said a quake that close to the coast would have to be more powerful to generate a giant wave.

Residents of Sinabang on Simeulue island, off the west coast of Sumatra and close to the epicenter, said the quake struck as people were gathered for pre-dawn meals and prayers during the fasting month of Ramadan.

"A few seconds strong earthquake shook everything around us," said Ahmadi, a trader at the town's market. "Everybody ran out from homes ... many screaming in panic, but there was no damage around us."

The panic extended to several towns and villages in Aceh's neighboring province of North Sumatra. Fearing aftershocks, many refused to go back inside for hours.

6.5-magnitude earthquake destroys houses in the Solomon Islands

HONIARA, SOLOMON ISLANDS (BNO NEWS) -- A strong earthquake struck the main island of the Solomon Islands on late Wednesday evening, destroying an unknown number of houses and causing injuries, seismologists and local officials said on Thursday. No tsunami warning was issued.

The 6.5-magnitude earthquake at 10:20 p.m. local time (1120 GMT) was centered about 39 kilometers (24 miles) southwest of Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands. It struck about 22.9 kilometers (14.2 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Emergency management officials in Honiara said they have received reports that a number of houses in settlements near the epicenter were destroyed and damaged, injuring at least one person. But the extent of the damage in the remote area was not immediately clear, and officials were still working to determine if there were other victims.

The USGS estimated that some 137,000 people on Guadalcanal island may have felt moderate to strong shaking, while 348,000 others may have felt light shaking. The tremors caused scores of people to run out of their homes and flee inland or to higher ground in fear of a tsunami, which was not generated.

Iran: At Least 87 Dead After Two Earthquakes

6:30pm UK, Saturday 11 August 2012
The two earthquakes struck the north west of Iran
  • Email

Two strong earthquakes have struck northwest Iran, killing at least 87 people.
The quakes struck near the city of Tabriz and the town of Ahar, but most of the casualties are thought to be in outlying villages which were destroyed.
The US Geological Service measured the earthquakes at magnitude 6.4 and 6.3 within minutes of each other.
Dozens of rescue workers have been sent to the region.
Iran is located on seismic fault lines and is prone to earthquakes. It experiences at least one tremor every day, although the vast majority are so small they go unnoticed.
