Default Controlled Burns

Last Friday I was in Flagstaff Arizona to do some shopping and grab lunch with the wife, it was a beautiful sunny day and it hit about 85°F, now around 10am I was shocked to see a huge cloud of smoke drifting across the San Francisco peaks that's the mountain range behind Flag and south of the Grand Canyon. Now I watched this over the next 2 hours or so and after lunch the wife and me headed up towards Snowbowl its the skiing area outside of Flag and sits about 9,000 feet, and you can see very good from there and I figure I could see the fire. On the way up on route 180 they head a sign stating there was a controlled burn going on that smoke may cover the road. Now that was an understatement about 14 miles out of town we hit the burning area and they had the road shut down at that time and they said it would be over by 4:30pm, so we headed back to Flag.

And as they told us at 4:30 the smoke basically cleared up and you could see the mountains again.

Now I understand the reason behind a controlled burn, but the smoke that was put out in this was unbelievable it covered most of a 12,000+ feet mountain and did so for most of the day. As it stands right now Arizona we have 5 Forest Fires burning and they are working on putting them out, and from what's been said so far they started from lightning this past weekend. Thing that I wonder is it worth doing this at times and how much pollution is put into the air in a controlled burn versus a forest fire. I know last summer we had a fire just south of the Grand Canyon that lasted over a week, and we had the ones along New Mexico border that burned for over a month.

Anyways I just wanted to get some others view points on this.
