Personal opinion of this is that these Nagas or whatever don't literally live underground.
I think perhaps 'underground' is a metaphor saying they live in a different vibrational frequency, or in an 'underworld'. I think looking for monsters in tunnels is going to be an utterly fruitless task. The monsters exist all right, but not in our material world of stones and mountains and pools of water. This thread makes good reading but ultimately, just because something makes a good story isn't enough to make it true.
