Olympic Park, London
The Olympic Park in London is a sporting complex under construction for the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, situated to the east of the city adjacent to the Stratford City development. It will contain the athletes' Olympic village and several of the sporting venues including the Olympic Stadium and Aquatics Centre. The park will be overlooked by Orbit, an observation tower and Britain's largest piece of public art. The site covers parts of Stratford, Bow, Leyton & Homerton in East London. The Royal Mail has given the postcode E20 to the Olympic Park and Stratford City; this was previously only used by TV soap EastEnders for the fictional suburb of Walford...To enable the major phase of construction to begin, the 52 electricity pylons, up to 65 metres high, that dominated the landscape in and around the Olympic Park were removed, and the electricity for the park is now run through underground tunnels. The IERS Reference Meridian (IRM), also called the International Reference Meridian, is the prime meridian (0° longitude) maintained by the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS). The northernmost land on this meridian is near Tunstall in East Riding,Yorkshire...The southernmost land in the UK is Peacehaven, East Sussex... Clays Lane
The Clays Lane Estate was a housing estate in Stratford, East London, and the UK’s largest (and Europe's second largest) purpose built housing cooperative. It was an experiment in building close-knit communities as a way of helping vulnerable single people. It became the subject of significant controversy when it was demolished to make way for the site of the London 2012 Olympic games.
The Housing Corporation instigated a standard (statutory) inquiry into the affairs of the Clays Lane Co-operative in 2000, and subsequently received a report of poor management of the Co-operative's affairs from the Audit Commission.The report was the result of an Audit Commission Inspection and which resulted in the Co-op receiving a judgement of zero stars and poor prospects for improvement. Under the Audit Commission inspection regime, this was the minimum,base, and worst possible, result for any housing provider. One of the report's most worrying findings was that the Co-op had no written Allocations Policy, which meant that it was not clear how people secured a place there or who was actually living there. It proposed that the Co-operative’s housing stock be transferred to the Peabody Trust, one of the UK’s largest housing associations, because of its better financial security, and the Government approved the transfer. The entire estate was the subject of a compulsory purchase order by the London Development Agency to make way for the athlete's village in the 2012 London Olympics site: indeed almost all the inhabitants cleared from the Olympic site were students at the adjacent UEL halls of residence or Clays Lane residents...Eminent domain (United States), compulsory purchase (United Kingdom, New Zealand, Ireland), resumption/compulsory acquisition (Australia), or expropriation (South Africa and Canada) is an action of the state to seize a citizen's private property, expropriate property, or seize a citizen's rights in property with due monetary compensation, but without the owner's consent....
