What's the purpose of using clear plastic to store water? Wouldn't glass be preferable? After about a year in a plastic gallon jug, water tastes like plastic, that can't be healthy...

It is what I did on the forum survival camping trip last year .

They are pritty tough too aren't they ?

They are good also for storing frozen water in and it takes ages for the water to thaw out too .

Mostly it is not safe to store water for too long in any container, we just cant safely get it sterile enough! Thats why long voyges carried beer and ales all those years ago. However, if you have enough water to last you for, say a year, then A, you have an awfull lot of water. And B, you should have found a source by the end of the year.

Plastic bottles are fine for bug-outs and as a make do for now, but one realy needs a tank or source for longer stays.

If not already said before, one could go to a take-away or food outlet and ask for those empty 25ltr big food oil containers. Mac Donnalds uses lard from a box, so go for the chipshop or kebab place. Ask for the box it came in too for protection.

I know this is an old post, but still relevant.

Glass 5 gallon bottles (also called "carboys") are still available, but all the water companies around here have switched to plastic so they're harder to find and cost more now than they used to. There are glass blowing companies in Italy and Mexico still making them.

Home brewers use the glass ones almost exclusively because the plastic ones are harder to sterilize between ferments. Try going to a home-brewing supply for glass carboys. They also have sanitizing solutions that don't require rinsing, such as "StarSan." Long term storage of water and food requires good sanitization practice, so having a couple of options is good. StarSan is easy to use and cost effective, but there are others out there.

I have a bunch of glass carboys that I got for the price of bottle-deposit "back in the day," which was $5 at the time. I needed some brewing supplies and had too many carboys underfoot so I traded in 2 of 'em to the local brewing shop for $10 or $15 (don't remember exactly) of store credit. I think he sells 'em for $20.

Brewing shops also sell rubber stoppers that fit the opening so you can fill them with water, pop the plug in and stash them in the back of closets or whatever.

I keep a couple of plastic carboys filled with water standing around to do water changes on the fish tank. The chlorine comes off naturally as it sits there, reducing the need for other chemicals in the tank. I don't plug the top, I just throw a hat over it to keep dust out. I'm pretty lazy about water changes so the jugs sit there for weeks at a time. If the water here ever became an issue I have 10 gallons staning, for cleaning at least. Not sure if I'd want to drink it without boiling first....

God forbid, you won't have to experience such hardship but just in case.

For the above three items, all you need is a carboard box, any old box will do. If you have a dust bin bag, line it and you can turn it into an instant water carrier (jelly can ), toilet, or a bucket for washing.

But the point is, any stored food, water should be constantly rotated and used so that it doesn't sit there for months and years.

Glass is preferable but it's heavy and expensive. Stone crocks would be even better, but also heavy and expensive.
