I believe there ARE people who want to help others with these diagnoses. But psychiatry is one field sadly that, a lot of times, you can have someone put away with no evidence but just saying they are a danger. Some people don't even need the lifelong drug dependence like al209 said, but ALSO like al209 said, you dont leave without a drug or two or three or however many. You are also highly unlikely to without a diagnosis, for those in the world concerned about reputation and the like.

Though this is a system that claims their priority is to help. That's great! But, its a largely flawed system. The trails and errors of a drug, like said, can can cause problems that meld into physical problems, which is a double spiral down if you are dealing with mental issues.

It's primarily about selling drugs. If someone gets better, great, but it's not necessary. That food and exercise aren't even considered shows this. You wanna see the shit get fed, and the amount of junk they have access to. I met there a competitive bodybuilder, who came in in fine shape ( I saw photos), and was 30 odd stone obese when I left. Think he'd been there about 4 years when I left. A few times I fed him the boxing mitts for a little workout and he was like a different guy the rest of the day, happier than I ever saw him. Intense exercise seems a powerful way to improve mental health, but it's free, so they aren't likely to explore it as treatment. The nursing staff were pretty genuine people, but they don't make the policies, and they seem to mostly think what that are doing is right, tho I met a few silent dissenters.

it's quite shocking when you see in hospitals
the vending machines full of junk food.

There was a bank of 4 vending machines right at the bottom of the stairs where the patients passed on their way out for fag or whatever. Junk is a bit harder to come by if your not allowed off the ward but they still load up at the shop. The hospital even had a burger king! The dinners are shitty as well, don't know if true but I heard they spend more per head in prison. There's tons of biscuits etc too.

in my view,
mental institutions are not about health
but
about "law".

by the way, and on topic,

here are some good articles about psychopaths:

Empty people. Puppet people. Cardboard cutouts. Drones. Organic Portals. Background characters. Why do these terms even exist? Because out of necessity they had to be invented by those who independently noticed the same puzzling phenomenon, one for which there is no official name: some people seem to be missing something very important inside. While they are not necessarily any less intelligent, successful, or physically healthy as anyone else, they nevertheless show no indication of having any higher components to their consciousness.

"The pollution of the earth and the paralysis of well-meaning people is a behavior pattern from the first two wars in this solar system. For these Men in Black, who are true fallen angels, this is their third and last knock... If they make the conditions on Earth bad enough, no one but themselves will be left on Earth for Beings from Orion can tolerate high levels of radiation because the stars there are extremely dense. Orion immune systems are very strong since their low level of vibration enables them to tolerate the typical modern diet and exposure to pollution and toxic chemicals far beyond what other Earth inhabitants are capable of. And, since their agenda is negative, the Men in Black are not agonized about the genocide of the species."

Imagine - if you can - not having a conscience, none at all, no feelings of guilt or remorse no matter what you do, no limiting sense of concern for the well-being of strangers, friends, or even family members. Imagine no struggles with shame, not a single one in your whole life, no matter what kind of selfish, lazy, harmful, or immoral action you had taken.

And pretend that the concept of responsibility is unknown to you, except as a burden others seem to accept without question, like gullible fools.

Now add to this strange fantasy the ability to conceal from other people that your psychological makeup is radically different from theirs. Since everyone simply assumes that conscience is universal among human beings, hiding the fact that you are conscience-free is nearly effortless.

Well, I can see why it seems strange, but bear in mind that people like junk food, especially when they're sick and miserable. You're not going to change dietary habits during a few day stay in your local hospital.

I do concur on the meals though - it's a miserable state unless you're in paeds.
