Not only abuse but extreme poverty, which is a form of abuse, causes psychological trauma in children - and has the same effect. So basically children in countries with extreme poverty will grow up being mentally traumatised and thus more open to religous extremism and the desire to perpetuate hate! Just look at the countries with extreme poverty and they are the hotbeds of violence!

Some research I did for an essay explains how abuse can stunt growth of the brain, the essay I did was about children who witness abuse between parents (and also who are victims of abuse)
'When confronted with stressful situations the human body responds by releasing hormones and activating brain circuits to cope. The hormones and chemicals of the stress responses help the person protect themselves when threatened. When the stressful event is over, the physical response decreases and finally disappears. However, in children who are chronically exposed to violence this stress response never shuts off and they live constantly in a state of alert and crisis, which can produce neurochemical changes and adaptations to the brain that will ultimately damage the child if not addressed (Cohen, E et al 2009).' |
