Pakistani police reportedly found the body of Tariq “Litto” Mashi Ghauri — a 28-year-old university student in Sargodha, Pakistan — lying dead in a canal outside a rural village in Punjab Province on May 15. He had been raped and stabbed at least five times.

Yet human rights watchdog groups say that what happened to Litto Ghauri is not uncommon because Christians in Pakistan are looked upon as the dregs of society. Pakistan’s population is 97 percent Muslim, and Christians are only a very small part of the remaining 3 percent.

Unlike the south, the northern islands are predominantly Muslim.The Jihad forces were outsiders, but had sympathisers in the neighbouring villages. Three nervous young men who managed to escape Lata Lata tell of what has befallen their countrymen. They saw the war began in Lata Lata at the end of January last year. "They came with automatic weapons," says one. "They pushed us back, although we tried to defend. Around 6pm they got us out of the village and we all fled to the hills." Many people were killed in the initial attack, they say. The survivors fled to the hills for three weeks.

Eventually Indonesia's Muslim-dominated security forces came and ordered them all to come down. "The security forces said if we did not come down they would force us down." When they got back to the village, they found it drastically changed. The church had been destroyed, and any sign of a cross removed. One large cross on a wall proved impossible to blow up, so they covered it with concrete.

The defeated Christians were taken to a village playing field where they were given the choice to convert to Islam or die a quick death. The men can still remember the Arabic words they were forced to say: "I bear witness that there is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet." They were also required to change their names, as Christian names were "not good." They say doctors were brought in from Java and Malaysia to circumcise the men. Some of the villagers suffered infections, but at least surgical equipment was used. On the island of Kesui, dozens were circumcised with a single, blunt razor blade. Lata Lata is not a unique case. There are many areas which Moluccan Christians can no longer safely enter. Christians who have escaped from these areas bring tales similar to what happened in Lata Lata.

Following his flirtation with preaching relative peace and tolerance at Mecca - a 13-year disaster that netted less than 100 followers (mostly friends and family) - Muhammad changed tactics during the last ten years of his life, as he obtained power. Near the end, he summed things up for his followers by telling them that he had been commanded by Allah to fight unbelievers until they spoke the Shahada (profession of faith in Islam).

During his later years, Muhammad did not seem at all bothered by conversions that were made under obvious duress. Mecca was a city whose residents and leaders detested him. Yet nearly all of them "converted" to Islam the day that he conquered them with an army so dominant that little resistance was offered. These even included his sworn enemies of Abu Sufyan and his wife Hind. Anyone who is familiar with their life to that point would find it quite a stretch to believe that their "religious epiphany" just happened to coincide with the sword at their throat (according to Muhammad's biographer, the exact words spoken to Abu Sufyan during his "acceptance" of Islam were "Submit and testify that there is no God but Allah and that Muhammad is the apostle of Allah before you lose your head" - Ibn Ishaq 814).

Meccans who would not change their religion were forcibly expelled from the city following that last Haj (Quran 9:5). The Christians and Jews living in Arabia suffered the same fate on Muhammad's order (after his death). The choice was given to them to either accept Islam or leave their land at the point of a sword (Sahih Muslim 19:4366).

The Jews at Khaybar were not at war with Muhammad when he ordered his warriors to attack them. Even his faithful son-in-law, Ali, whom he chose to head the mission was somewhat perplexed as to the pretext on which they were to assault this peaceful farming community so far away from Medina:

Muhammad said: 'Proceed on and do not look about until Allah grants you victory', and Ali went a bit and then halted and did not look about and then said in a loud voice: 'Allah's Messenger, on what issue should I fight with the people?' Thereupon he (the Prophet) said: 'Fight with them until they bear testimony to the fact that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his Messenger' (Sahih Muslim 31:5917)

The Jews were caught entirely be surprise, of course. Their wealth was stolen and their women and children distributed as slaves by the prophet of Islam to his men. Muhammad even took a woman for himself (after ordering the death of her husband).

Before his death, Muhammad sent his warriors against pagan Arab tribes, such as the al-Harith, demanding that they either convert to Islam or be wiped out (they opted for the Religion of Peace). On his deathbed, he cursed Christians and Jews (Bukhari (8:427)).

Muslims are taught to follow in the way of Muhammad. A Muslim under the reign of Umar put it this way "Our Prophet, the Messenger of our Lord, has ordered us to fight you till you worship Allah Alone or give Jizya (i.e. tribute)" Bukhari (53:386). Down through the centuries Muslims have forced Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Zoroastrians, pagans and others to accept Islam, either by bluntly offering them death as an alternative, or by making their lives so miserable (ie. taxes, denial of rights...) that the conquered convert to Islam under the strain.

Forced conversions persist among extremists. Recently in Egypt, a Christian girl was kidnapped and told that she would be raped

if she did not convert. Another notable case was the kidnapping and forced videotaped conversion of two FOX reporters in Gaza in September, 2006. Neither of these examples of forced conversion was condemned by Islamic organizations, even in the West.

Since Muslims believe so sincerely that their religion is truth, they often can't help but feel, on some level, that forced conversion is more of a favor done to the subject - a case of the end justifying the means.

It is very important to note the critical role that Jizya plays in Islamic teaching. Paying a "tax" to Muslims is the only avenue of escape for those who don't want to leave their religion. This answers the question of why Muhammad, his companions, and subsequent Muslim armies didn't force everyone to convert to Islam.

As Muhammad realized with the Jews of Khaybar, who were allowed to keep their farming community provided they directed the profits of their labor to him, it was often more lucrative to leave local economies in place rather than killing everyone male who wouldn't convert. This became the loose rule for the Muslim armies that swept across Christian, Jewish, Persian, Hindu and Buddhist lands in the decades that followed. The money that was collected was then used to further Islamic expansion.

As Muhammad put it: "My sustenance is under the shade of my spear, and he who disobeys my orders will be humiliated by paying Jizya" (another translation: "My provision has been placed under the shadow of my spear, and abasement and humility have been placed on the one who disobeys my command.") The hadith has been quoted by al-Qaeda and is found in the original version of Bukhari and Ahmad (5114 or 4869, depending on the translation).

Another point to keep in mind is the distinction between speaking and believing. Muslims are commanded to fight unbelievers until they say they believe in Allah (or pay the Jizya), but there seems to be a tacit understanding that belief itself can't be forced (ie. "there is no compulsion in religion"). Nevertheless, once a subjugated individual outwardly converts to Islam under the strain of taxes and discrimination, they are not allowed to recant upon penalty of death. Their children must also be raised Muslim. And, if they aren't, then it is a sign of apostasy - subject to death.

This is how Islam managed to spread so successfully within conquered populations to ratios in the high 90th percentiles over native religion.

Qur'an (2:193) - "And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion be only for Allah. But if they desist, then let there be no hostility except against wrong-doers." The key phrase is to fight until "religion be only for Allah."

Sahih Muslim (1:33) The Messenger of Allah said: "I have been commanded to fight against people till they testify that there is no god but Allah, that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah..." The last part is the Shahada, or profession of faith in Islam.

Sahih Muslim (19:4294) - "When you meet your enemies who are polytheists [Christians...], invite them to three courses of action. If they respond to any one of these, you also accept it and withhold yourself from doing them any harm. Invite them to (accept) Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from them and desist from fighting against them ... If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah's help and fight them"

Bukhari (8:387) - "Allah's Apostle said, 'I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah.' And if they say so, pray like our prayers, face our Qibla and slaughter as we slaughter, then their blood and property will be sacred to us and we will not interfere with them except legally and their reckoning will be with Allah.'"

Bukhari (53:392) - "While we were in the Mosque, the Prophet came out and said, "Let us go to the Jews" We went out till we reached Bait-ul-Midras. He said to them, "If you embrace Islam, you will be safe. You should know that the earth belongs to Allah and His Apostle, and I want to expel you from this land. So, if anyone amongst you owns some property, he is permitted to sell it, otherwise you should know that the Earth belongs to Allah and His Apostle."

Bukhari (2:24) - "Allah's Apostle said: "I have been ordered (by Allah) to fight against the people until they testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah's Apostle, and offer the prayers perfectly and give the obligatory charity, so if they perform a that, then they save their lives and property from me except for Islamic laws and then their reckoning (accounts) will be done by Allah."

Bukhari (60:40) - "...:And fight them till there is no more affliction (i.e. no more worshiping of others along with Allah)." 'Affliction' of Muslims is explicitly defined here being a condition in which others worship a different god other than Allah. Muslims are commanded to use violence to 'rectify' the situation.

Bukhari (59:643) - "Testify that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, or else I will chop off your neck!" Words of a military leader that Muhammad sent on an expedition with the mission of destroying a local religion in Yemen.

Ibn Ishaq 959 - Then the apostle sent Khalid bin Walid… to the Banu al-Harith and ordered him to invite them to Islam three days before he attacked them. If they accepted then he was to accept it from them, and if they declined he was to fight them. So Khalid set out and came to them, and sent out riders in all directions inviting the people to Islam, saying, “If you accept Islam you will be safe.” So the men accepted Islam as they were invited. The text goes on to say that Khalid taught the al-Harith about Islam after their "conversion," proving that it was based on fear of slaughter rather than a free and intelligent decision.

Forced conversions in Islamic history are not exceptional—they have been the norm, across three continents—Asia, Africa, and Europe—for over 13 centuries. Orders for conversion were decreed under all the early Islamic dynasties—Umayyads, Abbasids, Fatimids, and Mamluks. Additional extensive examples of forced conversion were recorded under both Seljuk and Ottoman Turkish rule (the latter until its collapse in the 20th century), the Shi’ite Safavid and Qajar dynasties of Persia/Iran, and during the jihad ravages on the Indian subcontinent, beginning with the early 11th century campaigns of Mahmud of Ghazni, and recurring under the Delhi Sultanate, and Moghul dynasty until the collapse of Muslim suzerainty in the 18th century following the British conquest of India.
Moreover, during jihad—even the jihad campaigns of the 20th century [i.e., the jihad genocide of the Armenians during World War I, the Moplah jihad in Southern India [1921], the jihad against the Assyrians of Iraq [early 1930s], the jihads against the Chinese of Indonesia and the Christian Ibo of southern Nigeria in the 1960s, and the jihad against the Christians and Animists of the southern Sudan from 1983 to 2001], the (dubious) concept of “no compulsion” (Koran 2:256; which was cited with tragic irony during the Fox reporters “confessional”!), has always been meaningless. A consistent practice was to enslave populations taken from outside the boundaries of the “Dar al Islam”, where Islamic rule (and Law) prevailed. Two enduring and important mechanisms for this conversion were concubinage and the slave militias—practices still evident in the contemporary jihad waged by the Arab Muslim Khartoum government against the southern Sudanese Christians and Animists. And Julia Duin reported in early 2002 that murderous jihad terror campaigns—including, prominently, forced conversions to Islam—continued to be waged against the Christians of Indonesia’s Moluccan Islands.
Given this enduring (and ignoble) historical legacy, it remains to be seen whether contemporary Muslim religious authorities—particularly those within Palestinian society, and affiliated with Hamas or Fatah—will condemn publicly the forced conversions of the kidnapped Fox reporters. Moreover, will they be joined by a chorus of authoritative voices representing the entire Muslim clerical hierarchy—Sunni and Shi’ite alike—from Mecca and Cairo, Qom and Najaf, to the Muslim advocacy groups in the West (such as CAIR in the United States, and the Muslim Council of Britain in England)—unanimous in their condemnation of this hideous practice, and formalized by a fatwa stating as much? Will such Muslim authorities at least recognize the acute predicament of Centanni and Wiig by issuing a fatwa stating that their “conversion”, being under duress, was not bona fide, condemning in advance any Muslim who might now attack these journalists for “apostasy” from Islam?

2ND February 2007, Pakistan: A young Christian woman was abducted by a Muslim man and was held for ten days.

She was raped multiple times and forcibly converted to Islam. Despite a complaint from the victim’s father, the police have not yet taken any action.

* 26th June 2008: Pakistan: Saba and Anila Younas, both Christian, were abducted by a group of Muslims, and forced to marry and convert to Islam.
When the matter came before the court, Main Naeem Sardar, District and Sessions Judge Muzaffargarh, on July 12, ordered that the girls are not to be remanded to their Christian parents because the girls are Muslim now.

* 13th June 2009, Bangladesh: A Hindu woman Koli Goswami 21, was asleep in her bed when five Muslim men broke into the family home. They vandalized the home and abducted her.

After some investigation by authorities, Kolis mother was told that she had converted to Islam after a long mutual love affair with one of the abductors. I have come across similar stories from various countries. So I'd say yes it's probably true.

Such as this

Money was spent lavishly to seduce Christian women and girls any way possible. The cost in the seventies and early eighties was about five thousand Egyptian pounds for the entrapment of each girl. The money was split so that the Muslim man who lured the Christian woman into conversion received half and the members of the police and collaborating associations would receive the other half.

The work of the proselytizing associations in Egypt continues to take place and the payments for deceptive conversions are now higher.

Today the average payment for an ordinary girl is ten thousand Egyptian pounds and payments can be as high as two hundred thousand Egyptian pounds if the girl is from a well-known Christian family, or is the daughter of a university professor, a deputy minister, or related to someone from the clergy.

Like my father, I too was involved with a proselytizing association. After we succeeded in converting a Christian woman, we would antagonize the Christians by parading the converted girl through the streets. We played loud music and waved flags while shouting "Allahu Akbar" to declare the victory of Islam.

Okay we know people are forced/coerced etc into becoming Muslims. Once in it's very difficult to get out of Islam. I pity those poor souls born into it or whatever way they got into it.

What is Apostacy?

Technically, apostacy means to leave a religion. It means to once have been a member or believer in a faith and then to cease to believe or to convert to another faith or to question an important aspect of ones faith.

What actually happens to Apostates who are caught in Muslim countries?

• Iran Ruhollah Rowhani, 52, was executed in 1998 for converting to the Baha'i faith from Islam. The US State Department has called on Iran "to protect the lives of 15 other imprisoned Baha'is. Three of them, Ata'ullah Hamid Nasirizadih, Sirus Dhabih- Magadamme and Hidayad Kashifi, have already been sentenced to death. Moderate President Khatami can do little to help as the courts are controlled by religious hardliners.
• The Reverend Mehdi Dibaj had converted from Islam to Christianity 45 years ago. On 21/12/93 he was sentenced to death on charges of apostasy. Released on appeal his body was found on 5 July 1994. The Reverend Haik Mehr, Superintendent of the Church of the Assemblies of God, who had campaigned against Dibaj's death sentence was found dead on 20/1/94. On 2 July 1994 the body of the Reverend Tatavous Michaelian, Chairman of the Council of Protestant Ministers in Iran was found with several gun shots to the head.
• Egypt We wish to raise what, at first glance, may appear to be an inconsequential or even humorous matter [at least in Australia where a good proportion of partners are unmarried]. A Cairo court has ordered the divorce of a couple who wish to stay together. Islamists have claimed that Professor Nasser Hamed Abu Zaid is guilty of heresy in writing that "Islam's teachings should evolve with changes in society." However, a Muslim woman cannot be married to a heretic, a non-Muslim. He and his wife, Ibtihal, also an academic have appealed against the ruling and can remain together for the time being. However if the prosecution stands, they could lose their jobs or even be killed .by fanatics as "adulterers ("living in sin") or as apostates ("deserters of Islam") [From "Some Islamic History]
• While there are, as yet, no laws against apostasy from Islam, the missionary or the convert may be convicted on other charges, for example "threatening social peace and intercommunal relations". There is, however, a Supreme Court ruling that a Moslem who apostacises is legally dead. He loses all rights and powers. He cannot withdraw funds from his accounts. Any person who kills him does not commit murder from a legal point of view because he is already legally dead. The "dead" person cannot marry or inherit. Nor is it possible for an apostate to have his identity card changed to "Christian". More than one hundred and fifty Muslims who have adopted Christianity have been detained in maximum-security prisons. They have been accused of threatening national unity. One example from a Coptic press release, concerned the case of Dr. Abdul-Rahman who has been held in Cairo without trial for two years for breaking with Islam. He is in solitary confinement but his will has not been broken. He is undoubtedly being used as a warning to anyone else contemplating apostasy

• Sudan Bit by bit the Islamic fundamentalists, the Ikhwan, were able to consolidate their power in Khartoum. In September 1983 a version of Shariah, the "September Law" was introduced. Many floggings, amputations and stonings were carried out. Incorporated in the law was ijtihad or "free interpretation". If the qazi was unable to find a relevant law to convict a defendant he could search the Qur'an and Hadith at his discretion. For example Mahmoud Taha, the 76 year old leader of the Republican Brothers was hanged in January 1985 for apostasy, although it was not a crime at that time.
  A number of southerners living in the north had changed their names to Arabic ones to improve their business prospects. They discovered that they had done a dangerous thing; now they were expected to be practising Muslims and could not use their original names without being subject to the death penalty for apostasy. Similarly at risk were non-Muslim families who adopted Islam or an Islamic name so that they could qualify for relief supplies during a famine. As for his book, the preacher asks that it be removed from the shelves, burned and forbidden to any reader. He blames the judge for having, among other things, denied that male circumcision is compulsory when there is unanimity in favour of it and when Mohammed was Himself circumcised 54.

Why is Apostacy such a terrible crime in Islam?

• Apostasy (Irtidad) in Islam ?If a person is raised in a society which protects his soul from the impurities of kufr and shirk, or if a person is shown the Right Path accepts it willingly - can such a person reject the Islamic faith? Is he allowed to apostate (become murtad)? Can he declare that he does not believe in God, Prophet Muhammad and the Day of Judgement?
  Once a person enters into the fold of Islam, the rules change. As soon as you become a Muslim by your own choice, you are expected to submit yourself to Allah totally and completely. "O You who believe! Enter into submission, kaffatan!" (2:208) he surrenders the right of making decisions to Allah and His Messenger. No believing man and no believing woman has a choice in their own affairs when Allah and His Messenger have decided on an issue." (33:36)
  Now even the question of apostasy, irtidad or deserting of one's faith, for a Muslim, becomes a shar'i/religious issue - even in this issue he is governed by the laws of Islam. And Islam clearly says: No! You cannot become an apostate.After coming into the fold of Islam, rejection of the fundamentals is not tolerated. If there are doubts in your mind about the fundamental beliefs of Islam, then discuss, question, debate, study and solve them BUT you are not allowed to leave Islam, desert your own fitra!
  On the issue of openly rejecting Islam, Islam cannot just stand aside and see one of its followers going astray. It would allow discussions to understand and solve the problems, but not allow its followers to lower themselves from the sublime status of "surrendering to the will of Allah-Islam" to the status of those "who have hearts but do not understand, ears but do not hear, and eyes but do not see."
• Apostasy is Equal to Treason Why does Islam not allow apostasy? Apostasy or irtidad in Islam is equal to treason. ?In Islam, the concept of treason is not limited to political and military affairs, it also has a spiritual and cultural dimension to it. In the Islamic order of sacredness, Allah then the Prophet and then the Qur'an occupy the highest positions. Tawhid, nubuwwa, and qiyama form the constitution of Islam. Just as upholding and protecting the constitution of a country is a sign of patriotism, and undermining it is a form of treason - in the same way open rejection of the fundamental beliefs of Islam by a Muslim is an act of treason. Apostasy i.e. the public declaration of rejecting the fundamentals of Islam, has also negative influence on the Muslim society, it is indeed a major fitna.
  And that is why Islam has prescribed harsh punishment for irtidad. It must be emphasized that irtidad which we are dicussing here involves open rejection without any force and with the realization of what one's statements or actions imply. The punishment prescibed by the shari'a for apostasy is death.
  Even the terms used by the shari'a for apostates give the idea of treason to this whole phenomenon. "Murtad" means apostate. Murtad can be of two types: fitri and milli. (1) Murtad Fitri means a person born of a Muslim parent and then he rejects Islam. Fitri means nature or natural. The term "murtad fitri" implies that the person has apostacized from his nature, the nature of believing in God. (2) "Murtad Milli" means a person who converted to Islam and then later on he rejects Islam. Milli is from millat which means a community. The term "murtad milli" implies that the person that the person has apostacized from his community.
  In the first case, the apostasy is like treason against God, whereas in the second case, the apostasy is like treason against the Muslim community. Probably, that is why there is also a difference in dealing with these two kinds of murtad.
  A former kafir who becomes a Muslim and then apostates (Murtad Milli) is given a second chance; if he repents then he is not to be killed.
  But one who is born as a Muslim and then apostates (Murtad Fitri) he is to be killed even if he repents. His repentance might be accepted by Allah but he still has to go through the punishment prescibed for his treason in this world.
  This punishment is only applicable in case of apostasy by men; in case of women the punishment is not death but life imprisonment. And if such a woman repents, then her repentance is accepted and the punishment is suspended.

Malaysia - Under Malaysian law, any convert to Christianity must apply to a shariah (Muslim law) court to legally renounce Islam. Many Christians prefer to remain silent converts rather than take their battle to the shariah courts, where apostasy or conversion out of Islam is punishable by whipping, fines, imprisonment and—in the most extreme application—death. In a country where Muslims account for more than half of the population, conversion from Islam is punished with a 5-year prison sentence and a $3,000 fine. A Malaysian Muslim who marries a non-Muslim and who converts the non-Muslim to Islam is rewarded with an apartment, a car, a one-time payment of $2,700, and a monthly stipend of $270.

The Muslim Boys

On Wednesday January 4, 2006 a black mother gave evidence at an inquest. At Southwark Coroners Court in southeast London, Ruth Marriott spoke of the last days of her son Adrian Marriott. He had been an accountancy student, but was also a gang member, belonging to the Peel Den Crew. He had been shot five times in the head on June 8, 2004, a few weeks before his 21st birthday. His body was found in parkland off Barrington Road in Brixton.

52-year old Ruth Marriott told the inquest: "We heard the shooting. We heard gun fire. The thought did strike me that Adrian could be involved, but it was a fleeting thought. Then we heard from police the following evening what had happened. Adrian was told on the Sunday prior to his death that he would be killed if he did not become a Muslim by the Wednesday, which was the day he died."

John Sampson, the coroner, asked if her son had taken the threat seriously. She answered: "I do not think he did." Sampson later declared that Adrian Marriot had been unlawfully killed.

Ruth Marriott had last seen her son on the day before he died. She said: "He was happy. He was pestering me to order something for him out of my catalogue. He liked music and football, but Adrian was very much a family man. He also loved his dog. They would go out together regularly to the park that he died in."

The gang that had ordered Adrian Marriott to convert to Islam is called The Muslim Boys. Until the killing its ascendancy had passed mainly unnoticed by the media. The Muslim Boys were viewed as just another of the many gangs that operated in south London, with names such as the Stockwell Crew, the Peel Den Crew, Mad Crew or Mad4T, the SMS (South Man Syndicate, also known as South Man Dem) and PDC (Poverty Driven Children).

The police took the threat of the Muslim Boys more seriously. When Adrian Marriott's funeral took place in Brixton, the ceremony was guarded by armed police.

The Muslim Boys drew their recruits, mainly young black youths, from Brixton, Peckham, Lambeth, and Streatham. They targeted run-down housing projects such as the Angel Town Estate in Brixton where Adrian Marriott lived with his mother, his brother David, sister Tara and other siblings.

The gang's core membership originally came from another housing project in Brixton called the Myatt's Field Estate.

The Muslim Boys would make most of their income by committing robberies, stealing from drug dealers and laundering money. They gained a fearsome reputation amongst their peers through their forced conversions to Islam.

Before Adrian Marriott was given the order to convert to Islam or die, his sister Tara had already become a target of the Muslim Boys. Tara Marriott and her friend Jade Okai had given in to the gang's demands and had converted.

They were given hijabs, Muslim headscarfs, which they were ordered to wear. They were also given Muslim books, DVDs and copies of the Koran, by two men who would later be charged with Adrian's murder.

In September 2005 three young men, Marcus Archer, Aaron Irving-Simpson and Marlon Stubbs, all aged 24, stood trial for the murder of Adrian Marriott. A jury at the Old Bailey heard that a few days before his murder, Adrian had told his brother that Marlon Stubbs and two other individuals had threatened him at gunpoint and demanded £500 ($979). Shortly after this, Marriott and an associate had "accosted" Archer at Loughborough Junction train station. Stubbs then telephoned Marriot's sister Tara and said: "Your brother is a little tadpole. He just messed with a big shark, a whale." Stubbs already had a conviction for raping two schoolgirls.

The trial soon collapsed, and two of the accused were set free. Marcus Archer was jailed for eight years for illegal possession of a firearm. When Archer was arrested for Marriott's murder outside a Croydon mosque in July 2004, a loaded gun was found in his pocket. No-one from the gang has been convicted of Adrian Marriott's killing. Though he belonged to a gang, Marriott's mother Ruth said of him: "Adrian was my protector. He always looked after me."

A month after Adrian Marriott was killed, apparently with five machine gun bullets fired at close range into his skull, one of his friends had tried to exact "street justice" upon Aaron Irving-Simpson of the Muslim Boys gang. Nyrome Hinds attacked Irving-Simpson at a bus stop in Norwood. During the subsequent fight, Hinds pulled out a machine gun and a standard pistol. He was later sentenced to 14 years' jail. The £13,505 cash ($26,432) he had with him at the time of his arrest was forfeited by Inner London Crown court on December 21, 2005.

In 2005, about 20 "hardcore" members of the Muslim Boys gang were in jail, but prison was just another place to continue intimidation and recruitment. In February of that year, a journalist from the Evening Standard newspaper interviewed one of the Muslim Boys. 21-year old Winston had been "converted" in prison. He said: "Now we all go to mosque together. If I refuse, they blow [shoot] me, innit. I pray twice a day: before I do crime, and after. I ask Allah for a blessing when I'm out on the street. Afterwards, I apologise to Allah for what I done."



Winston, who claimed to support Osama bin Laden, described his love of knives and spoke casually of the arsenal of guns possessed by gang members. These included Mac-10 machine pistols. He boasted of the money that the gang made from robberies, and said: "Then, after midnight me and my bruvs go to mosque to pray."

Imams in south London were intimidated to make them open their mosques to allow Muslim Boys gang members to pray after hours. The chairman of Brixton mosque, Abdul Haqq Baker, said of the gang's behavior: "What we are seeing is a new phenomenon that I have not seen in my 15 years as a Muslim." In January 2005, Brixton and Stockwell mosques publicly declared that there were "criminals masquerading as Muslims" who threatened the reputation of genuine Islam.

Operation Trident was a police initiative to combat the escalating cases of black-on-black gun crime, then headed by Detective Chief Superintendent John Coles. A police statement read: "Trident are aware of a number of young black males in South London who call themselves the Muslim Boys, and are involved in gun and drug related offences. Some of these individuals claim to have converted to Islam, although their beliefs are not recognized by genuine Muslims within the community."

One officer from Operation Trident, Detective Sergeant Gary Friar, has claimed that the Muslim Boys use kids to deal drugs for them and to carry weapons. He said in 2006: "They employ runners as young as 12 or 13. Most of these kids join gangs under duress. The majority are from deprived backgrounds and estates where they come into contact with older gang members. The Myatt's Field Estate in Brixton, for instance, has a core of four or five ringleaders who put pressure on younger kids to deal drugs for them."

"A lot of these youngsters don't want to get involved but they are subjected to physical violence or threatened with firearms. Older gang members don't want to get their hands dirty. They don't want to get caught with the drugs. They would rather make a phone call to have their gun delivered as and when they need it rather than carry it around and face five years in prison."

A month after Marlon Stubbs had walked free from the Old Bailey courtroom, he was again arrested, following an incident in Condell Road in Battersea, southwest London. He and another Muslim Boys gang-member, Stefon Thomas, had been identified by eyewitnesses after a family was shot at in the street. On October 10, 2005, Marlon Crooks had been proudly displaying his new BMW convertible to his relatives. A gang approached and opened fire on Crooks, his eight-year-old daughter, his mother, grandmother, sister and brother. Providentially, no-one was hit by the bullets.

Stubbs, Thomas, and another Muslim Boys gang member, 20-year old Sanjit Webster, were charged with attempted murder at an Old Bailey trial. The jury failed to convict them on these charges, but on November 28, 2006, all three were jailed for possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

When Stubbs and Webster had been arrested, they were in a taxi traveling from Brixton to Stratford on November 3, 2005. This was the last day of Ramadan, Islam's holy month, when Muslims are traditionally urged to abstain from battles. They had been overheard saying: "When Ramadan ends, the snake is going to strike."

On the same day that Stubbs, Webster and Thomas were jailed, three members of the Muslim Boys gang were convicted of a killing which had taken place shortly after Adrian Marriott had been "executed" for failing to convert to Islam. On August 1, 2005, a 23-year old nursing assistant called Charles Anokye was with a friend at the Mass nightclub at St Matthew's Church, Effra Road, Brixton. Both men worked at the Rosedale Nursing Home in Tooting Broadway.

During a three-month trial at the Old Bailey, Anokye's friend James Idamakin testified that they had both been dancing when another man had said: "You're blocking my view." Charles Anokye had knocked another dancer with his drink bottle, and Idamakin had excused his friend by saying that Anokye was drunk, and had not intended that to happen. They left the club at 4 am, and Idamakin told the court that he had seen the Muslim Boys running out of the club.

"I saw Charles with some boys.They were running after him. There were about six of them. They were kicking and punching him. He was on his feet then he fell," Idamakin said.

The court was shown closed circuit television footage of Charles Anokye being kicked, punched and stabbed. Two other people testified after being placed under a witness protection program. Anokye received 13 knife wounds to his chest and back and died. His assailants rifled his pockets for money as he lay bleeding to death in the street.

17-year old Anwar Hussain was convicted of murder. Two accomplices, 18-year old Edwin Bamfo and 20-year old Aaron Roberts were convicted of manslaughter. 18-year old Rico Tracey and 17-year old Ben Jatto, were cleared of killing but were convicted of violent disorder. One other individual was cleared of involvement, and the jury could not reach a decision on two other defendants, who were to face a retrial.

Hussain was later given a life sentence, while Bamfo and Roberts received a ten year jail term. Bamfo, who had formerly held ambitions to represent Britain as an Olympic sprinter, later had his jail sentence reducued to eight years. Ben Jatto received an 18-month jail term and Rico Tracey was jailed for two years.

Tracey's girlfriend Fatima Cardoso was given a three year jail sentence for perjury in July 2007. She had provided a false alibi for Tracey during his trial, and had continued to lie when tried for perjury.

In September 2006, another member of the Muslim Boys gang was jailed for 10 years for weapons possession. 22-year old Joel Simmonds had a Mac-10 with 10 rounds of ammunition, as well as a stun gun and body armor.

In the same month, the South London Press reported that with many of their leading players in jail, police were claiming that the fearsome reputation of the Muslim Boys was fading.

Ruth Marriott was skeptical. She said: "I don't think this is the end. The courts are too lenient and these guys are treated like royalty in prison. They regroup inside and come out with even more confidence... The Muslim connection is a load of ****. They use it to hide their evil deeds behind. I know true Muslims and they would never behave like this."

Though there may be fewer active members of the Muslim Boys on the streets of south London, their activities in jail are still giving Britain's prison service a headache.

Many of the Muslim Boys gang members were incarcerated at Belmarsh, a prison that was constructed in 1991. This prison has traditionally housed the majority of Britain's convicted Muslim terrorists. One of its notorious inmates is hook-handed Abu Hamza al-Masri, former firebrand preacher at the Finsbury Park Mosque. A serving prison officer at HMP Belmarsh has recently stated: "The highest-risk prisoners are kept in the High Security Unit. It's a jail within a jail. The talk of the unit is always Abu Hamza. None of the prisoners ever bother him. A lot of the Muslim Boys look up to him. In addition to a portable TV, he has his own laptop provided by the Prison Service, a few books and a prayer mat."

Inside Belmarsh jail, the Muslim Boys have imported their savage and ferocious behavior. They have carved for themselves a unique position within the prison hierarchy, feared by inmates and treated with caution by prison officers. To achieve this, they have violently attacked inmates and staff alike.

In December 2005, a leaked internal security report from the jail stated: "Prisoners reported abuse, assaults, intimidation and threats. Some of the atrocities were carried out with impunity during associations causing victims to fear for their lives. Most of the perpetrators are believed to be members of the Muslim Boys gang who intensified their drive to recruit other prisoners to the fold. They force prisoners to accept the Muslim faith - those who refuse suffer assaults. They promise potential converts protection from other prisoners and staff who they challenge at every opportunity."

A month later, a source inside the prison stated: "The Muslim Boys' gangmaster orders most of the assaults on fellow prisoners. They rule through fear and are very hard to infiltrate."

In a vain attempt to control the violence led by the Muslim Boys gang, one gang leader was transferred in December 2005 to Brixton jail. This individual was said to have had "An extensive custodial history of drugs, assaults and threats of assaults to both staff and fellow prisoners." Another Muslim Boys leader was sent to Whitemoor jail in Cambridgeshire. This man was described in the leaked security report: "In league with others he engaged in intimidation, assaults and recruitment of others into the Muslim Boys Gang/Muslim religion. The membership's aim is to confront staff and cause major disruptions to good in the prison. Has been seen, along with two others, going round the landing tooled up [carrying weapons]."

In February 2006, a prominent member of the Muslim Boys gang led an attack upon prison staff that led to a riot in the prison's high security unit. A prison guard was set upon by two inmates. Two of these were Muslim Boys gang members. Another prisoner then joined in. The officer was hit around his head and upper body with a pool cue and also a sock that had been filled with cans of tuna. He received cuts and needed hospital treatment. The incident led to further violence in which two other prison guards were also attacked. One of these was punched and kicked in the shower block of the unit, and the other was assaulted in the medical treatment room. About ten prisoners and ten staff fought with each other, and five prisoners were given disciplinary action.

On Good Friday, April 14 2006, one member of the Muslim Boys was "punished" for trying to convert out of Islam. When the Belmarsh prisoner was in the toilet, eight Muslim Boys gang members attacked him. The victim received head injuries. When prison officers tried to intervene, they too were attacked. The Home Office denied that the attack had been a serious incident, but a spokesperson said that four men were being subjected to "administrative action."

In May 2007, a leading member of the Muslim Boys gang again led an attack upon Belmarsh prison staff. On the morning of May 4, this individual was asked to hand over his laptop computer to a prison officer. In March 2006 the prison had controversially authorized the issue of laptop computers costing £1,000 apiece ($1,958) to 28 of the prisoners in the jail, including terror suspects and Abu Hamza. The prison authorities argued that these computers were to be used for prisoners to prepare their legal defenses.

The Muslim Boys gang member had been suspected of using a smuggled card to enable his laptop computer to be connected to the internet. He refused to give the computer to the officer and then punched and kicked him. Other prisoners then joined in, brandishing pool cues. When the security alarm was sounded, three more prison officers were attacked, in what was regarded by staff as a pre-planned assault. One of the prison officers received a broken chin and another underwent shoulder injuries.

The nefarious activities of the Muslim Boys have continued inside Belmarsh. On Tuesday last week, the Daily MIrror reported that a plot by the Muslim Boys to hold a prison officer as a hostage had been foiled. The act was to have been carried out as a "spectacular show of strength" by the gang, prison officers claimed. On Christmas Eve, plans of the prison's accommodation and the alarm system had been found in the possession of one prisoner. A prison source told the Mirror: "We understand some prisoners were plotting to maim or even kill a staff member after holding him hostage. It was designed to be high profile and high impact... There is a sense of relief that a major plot has been scuppered. But at the same time it has heightened fears that the safety of staff can no longer be guaranteed."

The Muslim Boys are in no way typical of either Muslim gangs in Britain, nor the "traditional" gangs that inhabit Britain's largest cities. Some police have suggested that they emerged after 9/11, and their claims to support Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda are part of a campaign to intimidate and rule by fear. Their rule on the streets of South London may, for a while a least, lack influence. In Belmarsh, a Category A jail where some of Britain's worst terrorists are housed, it appears that their campaign of fear is showing no signs of going away.

In Part Two, I will describe how young British Muslims, alienated from their parents' traditional cultures, have been drawn into gangs. The activities of some of these gang members are just as disturbing as those of the "Muslim Boys".
